I've moreorless given up artificial sweeteners. I don't like them.

I think a HUGE cause of it is fat and greese. I used to take advantage of it. Go to McD's and get a McGriddle meal. Yummy!!! Then 20 min later not have it in my system anymore. Not healthy, I know, but it sure was yummy.

But since I'm not eating that stuff anymore, and I'm not eating artificial sweetener, I've gone to almost solely whole grains.....

caffeine I know is a trigger. Especially early in the morning.

I read that the SB diet will help with the symptoms. I can see htat, but I still have the problem from time to time.

I have alot of the same triggers, Christine. One of the things I have found that does actually help the constipation is adding a probiotic supplement. I'm drinking Kefir lately, instead of taking a probiotic capsule and I'm seeing a definite change.

Christine, your problem comes up sometimes on the Weight Watcher's boards. They said that too much yogurt can be a cause. I do OK as long as I eat plenty of fiber and at least two teaspoons of healthy oils every day. If you've gone to a lowfat diet, you might want to make sure you're still getting some oil. WW recommends canola, olive or flax. I just use a little oil to sautee veggies, or mix it with vinegar and spices to make my own salad dressing.

We've temporarily fallen off of the wagon (or treadmill as the case may be), and are trying to get back on. DH has a work study job at school that is walking around campus to pick up trash, so that will up his exercise- now just need to figure out how to get mine back up. I want to get back to the c25k, just haven't been back to the gym.
Still debating doing SB- I'm leaving the choice up to DH.

I think it is amazing that all of you ladies are working so hard to be healthy. I have been reading this thread for awhile and even though there are some ups and downs the committment is there. I hope you don't mind if I join you.

I am 36 years old and until recently I have never been okay with my body. I used to be the other way and too skinny. I had to have size 0 taken in. I felt horrible and now that I look back, I looked horrible too. One of the ways I maintained that dangerous weight was smoking. When I quit smoking almost 4 years ago I began to pack on the weight. I mean like over 50 pounds in 4 months and it kept coming. My metabolism was blown and I could not stop gaining. Only the grace of God and my supportive husband kept me from doing something rash like complete starvation or smoking again. My husband would keep telling me, "Honey we knew this would happen but it will balance out. You are beautiful." Finally it did and I started losing but then I became pregnant. Again prayer and my husband kept from doing something silly. I would remind myself that gaining weight was necessary for the baby. My doctor told me I had one of her healthiest pregnancies. It was only because I had to completely focused on the baby's health. Once the scale went over 200lbs, I simply stopped looking and avoided mirrors. The baby was so important to me.

After having an emergency c-section, it took me almost 3 months to even walk normally. I was determined to get healthy, not skinny. I am still on this journey.

What is the ultimate goal for my body? To be strong, healthy and feel great. I would like to be 125/135 lbs and size 4-6. For my 5'3' very small frame this is actually considered somewhat heavy (??) but since I do weight training and have built alot of muscle anything lower would be crazy.

My plan to get there is eating clean. I don't do calorie restrictions because I am nursing. I exercise alot. I do cardio 5-6 times a week usually running 3-4 times of that number, I strength train 4 times a week, stretch alot, and just try to be more active in general. I am going to start training for a sprint triathalon.

Is there a time limit to be in shape? No, I just want to be at peace with my body and be healthy.

Do I have mini goals? Yup, actually I just achieved one by running 6 miles in under an hour on the tread mile. For all of you doing the couch to 5k, you can do it. About 6 months ago, 4 months after my c-secion I started running. At first it was run (okay, we will call it running!) 3 minutes, walking 2 minutes for 4 cycles. It was brutal. Two weeks ago, I ran the 6 miles. It made me feel amazing! I had never run before in my life and I had did it!

I dropped under 150lbs recently and made a conscious decision to stop looking at the scale. For me, focusing on my weight is a dangerous thing. I hope to avoid the scale until the next time I go to a doctor. Hopefully that will be because I am pregnant again! I just focus on health. I get too obsessed. A couple of weeks ago, I was still running 3-5 miles after being up all night with dd. I finally realized I was just hurting myself. I have not been to the gym for 2 days because my little one is teething hard and I don't think I have slept more than 6 hours in the past 24 hours.

Sorry this is so long but I wanted to add a praise. It was through my pregnancy that God finally made me understand my body and the innate beauty that is truly in every one of us. Being healthy, feeling comfortable, and being strong is great but trying to adhere to the bizarre beauty standards of the day were killing me. I cannot believe that God wants that for anyone. God showed me one of the most awesome functions of my body and showed me how beautiful I am to Him. I praise Him for this lesson.

God bless you all!
Karen

Welcome Karen.

Sue --- I'm getting my oils OK. I think I have a fairly balanced diet. Lots of veggies, decent protein, whole grains. My mom is doing WW too and lectures me constantly about my eating. (forgive me for rolling my eyes, but I'm down to my goal weight and I'm maintaining now.)

I believe my biggest trigger is caffeine. But some days I can drink coffee without any issues, and the next day I'm running to the bathroom every 10 minutes.

Ryanne --- what's a probiotic supplement?

Sorry, I really didn't mean to lecture. It's just that I tried to skimp on the oil and suffered for it.

They are basically healthy bacteria that support good gut flora. HERE is a Wiki on them, it also has a little section about their use with IBS.

I didn't think you were lecturing. Just saying my mom does.
Good info to have though.

Lots of oil used in my cooking, and of course I do oil/vinegar salad dressing quite a bit.

Hey, ladies. I haven't gotten involved in this thread, but I have a question I'd like to bury in here instead of putting in a new thread for men to see.

Since January I've lost almost 35 lbs, basically through diet and exercise. I've been on Sparkpeople.com and going to Curves as well as some cardio outside of Curves (mostly walking). Woo hoo!

But anyway...

I have been wearing regular bras when I walk and work out. Just recently I bought a couple sports bras, figuring they'd be better. I wore one yesterday, walking 1.5 miles to Curves, for my workout, then back home. The bottom of the thing was wet even by the time I got to Curves. While on the workout, my shirt would kinda catch on my bra in that area and get wet stripes. And yeah, it was still wet (and moreso) when I walked home. It was gross. My normal bras are lace underwires, and they don't hold the sweat at all. So my question is: which is better? Do I really have to wear a sports bra, or is doing a low impact workout such as walking and Curves OK in a normal bra?

Get a sports bra. Almost all of them are wicking. Its my fashion pet peeve, wear workout clothes when working out. Plus you don't to worry about strap moving and lace itching.

Do you have Targets in Canada? Their champion line is real good and inexpensive.

No, no Targets.

The one I wore was Fruit of the Loom. I'm pretty sure it said it was wicking, but it sure didn't seem to!

Hmm. You might be able to get them online. They start at 15.00 vs 30 and up for the other brands. Congrats on the 35 pounds, I saw one of your posts and thought it was you.

Try a different one. Even when I'm not running I feel better in a sports bra- no worrying about straps falling down or the bra riding up, and I can move however I need to.

I wear a sports bra sometimes. I don't like the mashed feeling. It does cut down on the rashes I get from sweating. I have a couple of exercise tops that have built in bras. I like them better, and they work fine for low impact aerobics or weight training. So far I haven't found anything that gives me enough support to do high impact things like jumping jacks. Maybe I'll be able to do those once I've lost more weight. It sounds like your bra isn't designed to wick up the sweat. Maybe try another brand?

I don't bother with a sports bra, even when I run. I just don't have enough to bounce, especially after losing weight. Perhaps I'm odd, but I don't have any problem with my straps and I just find a regular bra to be much more comfortable.

I used to use a sports bra but couldn't even jog because it was too painful; I had big boobies. Now, I jogged after losing weight, but can't because of herniated discs. I wish I could jog

Tricia, I got a great sports bra at Walmart, it was just a store brand, but it has wires, but they are on the outside, so they don't really sit under the breast. It's my favorite sports bra so far. (I used to wear a regular bra, and then a sports bra over top )

I don't think there's anything wrong with wearing a regular bra, but the extra sweat and activity might ruin your bra and wear it out quicker.

Ok, i've officially decided I'm doing the 5K in November. I am excited!!

Yolanda, congrats on going for the 5K!

Well, the scale finally moved this morning. I do a midweek "check-in" weigh on Wednedays, offical weigh in on Sundays. Sunday said 208.5 and today it was 205! Woo Hoo! That makes a total of 16 pounds on South Beach. After my small loss this week, I was getting really discouraged and thought about throwing in the towel and going back to eating like I used to. I didn't want to though! I toughed it out those couple of days of frustration because I realized how much better I feel now. I feel like I've really turned a corner mentally. Now to just get back to exercising regularly.
