We got a new computer! It's an HP computer, and has Windows XP on it. It's actually new! This is the first one we've bought since the fall of 2000.

We bought it on the day after Thanksgiving. Erick went to (I think it was) Circuit City really early in the morning and stood in line for 40 minues. But you had to order it, you couldn't pick it up that day. They advertised it for $99, and that you could get certain upgrades (better printer, more memory, larger monitor) for another $49. This is after a bunch of mail in rebates, of course. It did say that shipping and handling was not included, but it didn't tell you that you had to order and that shipping was going to be $100. It was still a good deal, so we went ahead and got it. Erick said a lot of people didn't--once they found out about the shipping charge they left the line in disgust. I guess they felt it was a scam. Maybe that was quite a bit for shipping, but still, $250 is a pretty darn good price for a new computer! I really like it. The monitor is so much bigger, and things run so much faster than our old computer. The monitor screen is large! It even connects faster.

They delivered it yesterday, and we got it set up. We put the old one downstairs for the kids to play games on. They think it's great having their own computer. I had to wait to get on yesterday, though, because Erick was finishing up his last school papers on it. Today's his last real day of school before finals next week, and then he's got one more semester left and then he graduates! Yay!

I'm actually watching a football game. I have never liked football, or understood it. I can't say I'm totally watching it, but I did turn it on voluntarily while my husband is asleep, so it's a first for me. The Colts finally are pulling ahead! They went the first half of the game without even scoring, and they are 17 to 16 against the Chargers, I think. Whatever team Drew Brees plays on, anyway. So I'm excited. They may still win this one and keep their winning streak.

I can't let Erick know that I'm actually interested in seeing how this game turns out. He might think I want to watch every game with him now.

Merry Christmas everybody!

The kids woke up the first time at 12:51 am. I told them to go back to bed.

The kids woke up the second time at 4:15 am. I told them to go back to bed.

The kids woke up the third time at 5:30 am. I got up and took a shower, and then woke up Erick who had gotten back from work at 3:00 am and was still tired, and we got up and opened all the presents.

Jay got a neat remote control flying UFO. They all got neat things, but I think out of all the things we got this year, his was the neatest. I saw it in the mall when I was buying Erick's Colts hat and knew it was perfect. He's been flying it all over the house. Joy has a bead set and just showed me a bracelet she made. It looks nice. She's good at crafts.

I told Erick we should have just shopped the preschool section for all the kids, because they all loved Timothy's and Rachel's toys. Timothy has a ball popper and they all think that's really something. He also got a little tractor with farm animals that sings "Old McDonald Had a Farm." Everytime Timothy hears it play he dances and clicks his tongue. He does that with any kind of music. It's so cute. All the rest of the kids like to copy him, so tongue-clicking is part of dancing in our house now.

Rachel loves her pink horse. She knew it was a horse, but the kids kept telling her it was a turkey. When she opened it up, she said, "My turkey!"

Sarah got a Barbie kitchen set that she really wanted. Abby got a Leap Pad. Erick got mostly clothes. I got some jewelry and some pajamas and some clothes and a set of plastic glasses.

It's been a good Christmas so far. And it's not even 8:30 yet! Erick's back in bed for awhile. At least he gets tonight off.

I put a picture in my first post. LINK It's a picture of my mom and dad and brothers and sisters and my husband's mom and dad and brother's and sisters. There are still a few missing--one married sister on my side and a married sister and married brother on my husband's side. But you can see there are still plenty in the picture!

And now, it is time for an installment of a brand new series, called, "Dumb Things my Customers Said"

Here's the first one.

I was handing some drinks out through the drive-through window--a Dr. Pepper and a Pepsi. I had marked the tops of them. Then I handed him his food. He said, "Which one of these is the Pepsi?" I told him I had marked the tops. He looked at the top of his and said to me, confused, "It just says Cola!"

I can't believe I am actually on! I haven't been able to connect at all for a few days. Not only that, but before that, even though I could connect, it was moving so slowly I would have to clean the house while waiting for pages to load or I'd be sitting in front of the computer for two hours. But it seems to be working okay now!

Yesterday, we sold our van. Someone had posted on Freecycle that they were looking for a minivan in the $3000 dollar range. I replied to it, and they bought it yesterday. So today, we're going to go buy a Suburban. Now we'll be just like the Penners. Ours is red, though. We are going to name ours Eliazar. Is that how you spell that? It just doesn't look right. Oh well. Anyway, they had $3500 on it, and we had thought about offering them $3000. Erick called about it yesterday and asked what they could do about it, and they said $2500. Yay! I guess we'll give them that instead. He's going to try to get it today. I hope so, because if he has to wait until Monday, he'll have to stay home with the babies because there's no way we're going to get eight people into the car!

We bought a Suburban! It wasn't the one we were originally looking at (that one didn't have enough seats) but it runs good. It's not as pretty, but that's okay. Erick's getting the windshield replaced right now because it was cracked, and it won't pass inspection here with a crack. We paid $2200 for it, and the windshield will cost $200. Eventually we'd like to get it painted.

A couple of weeks ago, our pastor challenged us to pray more. I decided to take him up on that challenge. I know the power of prayer, have been there, done that, but it's so easy to forget sometimes and not pray as much. He said if it was just three minutes a day, to pray daily, and I figured I can handle that. I've heard some great teaching on prayer lately, and I'm ready to improve my prayer life.

These are some of the things I'm working on:

1. To pray everyday--set aside, prayer with God. This is apart from the pray-through-the-day type of prayers. I do those kind all the time. But it's hard to set aside a block of time and say, "Okay, now I'm going to pray." In the past, I've used my devotional time with mostly Bible reading, and then said a prayer along with it, but the bulk of the time I'm not praying, I'm just reading the Bible. I'm not wanting to minimize Bible reading, but I want to have more quality, daily prayer time.

2. To pray for others. It's really easy to get self-centered in prayer. "Lord, bless me. Lord, give me a good day. Lord, help me." These are all good, but there are so many other people who need my prayers! Since I've started praying more for others on a regular basis, I have seen so many of my prayers answered. God has also brought about other opportunities to minister to people that I may have been missing out of before.

3. To pray specifically. I don't mean praying arrogantly, by telling God want to do (instead of the other way around) but sometimes our prayers are so general and vague, it's hard to know when God has answered. I have some very specific things I'm praying for now. There are some things I desire to happen in my life, and I'm asking God for it. I know that He will answer my prayers as He sees fit.

Today I am typing out Erick's answers to his biology class. He's already written them out on paper, I'm just typing them out for him because I want to give him a little break. He really needed some sleep today.

A guy at school asked him to give him an estimate on a siding job. He's probably not going to take the job, though. It would take him a couple of weeks and he just doesn't have the time. If it were a smaller job that he could knock out in a week he could do it over Spring Break. The other estimate was $5000 and he said if Erick could do it for that or less he'd give the job to him, but Erick needs to stay focused. Only 12 1/2 more weeks!

Well, Erick is considering taking that siding job after all. We did some figuring, and if the guy can pay him either in advance or in installments, Erick could make more money doing that job than he could staying at the job he is at until the end of May. He hates his job and he's been there four years already. He hardly gets sleep and he's been stressed out over it for the past couple of years because of the way things are being run. The last straw was when they moved him to weekend supervisor and then told him that he was only budgeted 14 hours a week for that position. He needs at least 20 and they knew that when they switched him over, so now he's having to work 14 on one clock number and then the rest on another clock number. Now they are wanting him to clock in and out on each building's clock number that he supervises. Some buildings are budgeted for as little as five minutes of his time.

So we're thinking if he works at this job until Spring Break, then we could take a trip to Indiana over Spring Break and get his old metal brake (or break, I'm not sure which) that he needs to do the siding job and we could take up a load of stuff while we are at it and put it in storage. Then he can do this siding job over the next couple of months instead of working at the cleaning company. He get to sleep more and could set his own hours and do something he enjoys for a change. The guy also has a small roofing job Erick could do as well if he gets the time.

We have set May 29th as our moving day, Lord willing. That is our 10th anniversary. We would love to be able to move as our annivesary present. We'll take another trip to Indiana right after graduation to rent a place and take up a second load of stuff, and hopefully land a job, (he's going to apply at ServiceMaster, which is another cleaning company local to the church he is going to be working at) and then head out for good on Monday the 29th. That gives us plenty of time to do the last bit of work on this house.

We're getting excited about moving.

Erick got a letter yesterday saying that he had been picked to be in the Who's Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges directory. This is a group of students selected from 2,300 institutions of higher leading. They choose 35 from CBC every year, and Erick was one of them. I thought that was pretty neat. I'm so proud of him! He's worked so hard.

Yesterday at work I was order taking in drive-through, and I wasn't really thinking about what I was doing. I was thinking about how we're going to Indiana in just a couple of weeks, and I was thinking, "Yay"! So I read back the order, and gave the lady her total, and I said, "Your total is $4.49 at the window, Yay!" Everyone was like, "Did you just say, 'yay'?"

~~~~~~~
This morning Abby hurt her foot on something. She showed it to me and said, "I hurt my paw."
I said, "Your paw??"
"Yes," she replied.
"I didn't know you had a paw. I thought doggies had paws."
"Kids and doggies have paws."
"Oh, I see!
Rachel always says the word "underwear" kind of like this: "ayowayo." That's about the only way I can spell it, although it sounds like it's got a hint of an "r" in there somewhere, too.
Anyway, last night, Rachel asked Joy, "Can you put my ayowayo away?"
Joy replied, "Yes, I can, but can you say, underwear?"
Rachel said, "No, I can't say underwear." I can only say, ayowayo."
I had taken yesterday off of work because Erick needed to start on that siding job. Actually, he's starting with a small porch roof. He's doing it yesterday and today, and then next week we'll go up to Indiana and get the metal break (brake?) that he needs to do the siding job.
We were having leftovers for lunch, and so we dug out all the containers out of the fridge that had accumlated over the last week or two--some lasagne, a slice of pizza, some taco meat and shells, etc. Down at the bottom was a container that I didn't remember--full of chicken and dumplings. It was green and blue. It's been quite awhile since we've eaten chicken and dumplings! Bravely I opened it and dumped the contents down the garbage disposal, turned on the water, and flipped the switch. Nothing. Oh wonderful. I pushed the reset button on the bottom and tried again, still nothing. I even got out the plunger and tried using that, and it didn't do any good.
I decided I needed to call Erick. There was no way I was going to get this fixed, and didn't want to spend who-knows-how-long with a sinkful of rotten, wet food. So I called the cell phone, and I got voice mail. I left a message, and then proceeded to try and empty the sink as best I could. I used a strainer and dipped it out a scoop at a time, putting the garbage in the trash, until I had the sink emptied. I used a ladle to get down inside the disposal itself and emptied it out until I could put my hand down inside it (ewww!) and feel around. I finally felt something poking up from the side--a little wire. I pulled on it, and it wouldn't budge. As I felt around and got it cleaned out better, I realized it was the little metal piece to a clothespin. The spring part of it was down underneath, and the wire parts were sticking up. I tried putting some pliers down there and getting hold of it, but there just wasn't room enough in the hole for my hands and the pliers at the same time.
I happened to go into the bedroom (to look for a flashlight, I think) and happpened to notice the cell phone was sitting on the shelf, plugged in to the charger still. So I had no way of getting a hold of Erick. I knew the first name of the man who he was working for, and I hunted all over for a phone number with that name on it. It wasn't on the cell phone or in the address book. I finally found a piece of paper that had an address and phone number, and said something about delivering materials, so I called that number, and got voice mail again. <sigh> After awhile, the owner of that number called me back, but it wasn't the right person, so that did no good.
Finally, I took the unit apart myself, and unscrewed it, and was able to use the pliars to get the metal piece out. I was really proud of myself for figuring out how to get it off and fixing it. Then I went to screw it back together, and for some reason the screws wouldn't tighten down no matter how much I turned them. I reasoned that perhaps they never did tighten down, and tried to re-install it as it was, but it wouldn't go in no matter how much I tried. So I had to leave it under the sink for my husband to install. When I drained the other side of the sink I found four small nuts, and I didn't know where they went so I guess it's a good think I couldn't put them back in. They were the reason the screws wouldn't tighten down, but I didn't even see where they came off of.
So I didn't get it all taken care of by myself--I still needed my man to come rescue me at the end of the day. But I did do the gross part by myself, and I did take it apart by myself which is big for me (I'm usually terrified to take things like that apart) so I told my husband that I should get a gold medal anyway.
Tuesday we leave to go to Indiana for five days. I'm excited! We're going to be at my family's for a couple of days, and we're going to visit Emily on Thursday, and we're going to see Elizabeth and Jason for the first time since they got married (actually, this will be the first time I've met Jason!) and we're going to spend a couple of days at Erick's parents' house. We're taking up a load of stuff and storing it in his grandpa's garage, too. We also have a meeting with Pastor Brent.
Today is the last day of work for Erick. He has already finished the small porch roof, and he's got to get the siding done, but no more working nights for him! WooHoo! Graduation is in 8 -1/2 weeks. Even Erick is starting to feel excited.
I'm excited about being back close to our families again. At least right now I am. We'll see if I still feel the same week after spending a week with them! I know there's been times in the past when we've come back from visiting them and wondered why we wanted to move there when he graduates. I'll let you know if I'm still excited after I come back.
I will miss this church. I love the people here, and the pastor, and I enjoy singing on the worship team. Who knows if I'll get to do that at Delphi or not. At least I can join the choir. I'm a little nervous, too, because it's been so long. There are a lot of people I don't know there now, and more that I don't remember their names.
Well, I'd better not spend all day on here. We've got a lot of work to do in the next couple of days!
We just came back last night from a week in Indiana. It was a good week, even though the weather was gray and depressing. We had a good visit with our families. We met with Pastor Brent, too. I've written before about how the church doesn't have the budget to hire Erick, so he will be looking for a secular job when we move there.
The Minister of Evangelism is going to be going to part time because he's going to be taking a part time job as the chaplain of a jail there. Eventually, he will be working towards not being on staff at the church at all, which will give the church some breathing room in their budget. Who knows--maybe in a year or two attendance will be back up again and they could afford to put Erick on staff, at least part time. Next time we come up we're going to discuss the particulars of what Erick is going to be doing there, and what exactly that means.
Erick bought a truck while we were there--his grandpa's truck. When Grandpa died last year, Erick's brother bought the truck from his grandmother. Erick got to talking to his brother and found out that he had never actually paid Grandma for the truck, and really couldn't afford to buy it. Erick asked if he would mind if he bought it instead, since he had the money for it, and he said that would be okay.
We also got to meet Erick's sister's new husband--the one she eloped with. They are staying at her parents' house still. The foreclosure they are buying has run into some problems, so they aren't sure when or if they will actually be able to buy it.
We did some school activities at both my parents' and Erick's parents' houses. I'm hoping to co-op regularly with my mom when we move back.
On the way home, Erick was going to bring back the truck he bought. It was really windy, though, and an hour into the trip he changed his mind. We took the truck back and parked it at Grandma's, and then brought the trailer we had rented back to U-Haul and went on to Missouri. God must have sent that wind, though, because we are so glad now we did not take it with us. The Suburban started acting up half-way through Illinois. The engine kept cutting out. We were starting to wonder if we'd make it home or not. We also had some really bad storms we drove through. We were praying we'd make it home. I had visions of being stranded on the side of the road with tornados running over us. It was scary for awhile, but I kept singing all the songs I knew about God's provision and protection, and eventually the Suburban started running smoother. We got home fine, about 15 minutes before quarter sized hail broke out. There were tornado watches out and everything. It would not have been fun trying to haul a truck behind us with all that going on. Besides, Erick would have wanted to work on it, and he's got other things to do with his time. He does have to work on the Suburban, though. That's what he's doing now.
Just a little funny--on the way home from church today, Jay told me that he thought I was the household kind of mom.
I won't be on forums much for awhile, because as of yesterday, our house is officially on the market. We weren't planning on putting it on the market just yet, it just sort of happened. Our realtor goes to our church, and we were talking Sunday about the house, and she said that she'd call me about it. She asked me when would be best for me, and I said Tuesday, and so she called Monday and asked if Tuesday at 4:00 would be good. I hadn't realized she was coming over on Tuesday, I thought she just meant she was going to call me so we could talk about it. She came over and brought all the paperwork with her and so we filled it out, and viola! We're on the market.
We were planning on waiting until we'd finished all the improvements, but she doesn't think we need to do that, so I guess we're not. She just wanted a list of the things we're still planning on doing to it, and so now we're running around trying to get it and keep it in show condition. I'm taking a leave of absence from moderating for awhile, because I don't have time. I'll at least try and keep my blog active, though.
I have been so busy the last few days! We've made a ton of progress on the house. We put in new countertops in the kitchen, replaced the linoleum on the landing, totally remodeled the downstairs bedroom, and I've painted the bathroom. I still have to finish it, though. We showed the house once so far, but we have two showings scheduled for today. Erick is going to skip his afternoon class so he can come home and take his online biology exam before the showing and before I go to work at 4:00.
I've been getting up at 5:00 AM every day and staying up late, only taking breaks to eat, and staying offline in case we get any phone calls. I guess I won't be able to pull any April Fools jokes this year!
Our house is under contract! After being on the market for only 8 days, it's on the market. We've had a total of 5 showings in this last week. We had a couple look at it yesterday and they put an offer on the house, our asking price of $110,00. We accepted it, and if their financing goes through, we'll have sold our house! It hadn't even been advertised yet.
I still have a lot of work to get done, though, so I'm still staying away from forums for the most part. We'll have more showings until thier loan is approved in case it falls through. Then when it's approved, we'll have inspections, so we need to get the rest of the work done on it. Erick has about half of the siding job he's been doing done, and four weeks and six days until graduation. The realtor said the inspections would probably be in about a month and a half, so we've got a little bit of breathing room to get it all done this time. Our closing date is scheduled for the 26th of May. We had been planning on moving on the 29th, so it will work out really nice. We decided to go back to Indiana after graduation after all, and look at some houses. By then we should know if this deal will work, and can put an offer on a house up there. There were some houses we looked at last night on the internet that we could get for only a $20,000 mortgage with the down payment we will be able to put on it!
Another thing that's happened recently is that K-Mac (the company that owns the Taco Bell I work for) bought a bunch of stores in Indiana, so I can transfer to any of the stores that are close to the city we're moving to and not lose my vacation time or pay rate or profit sharing (if I wanted to work there until I was sixty!) So I'm just going to do that, and then Erick can look for a job when we get there. It will be helpful in getting a loan on a new house if I have a job already that I've been at for four years instead of just starting out, too. I've got the addresses of all the Taco Bells in the area. When we decide where we're moving, I'll put them in to MapQuest and find which one has the shortest driving distance and pick that one to transfer to.
Well, I'd better go. I've got things to do!
The couple that put the offer on our house couldn't get the financing, so our house is still on the market. It's day 12 of our house being for sale, and we've had seven showings so far. Our latest was an impromptu showing yesterday. We'd just had a showing 45 minutes earlier, so the house was still looking really nice, and we were installing some doors that we had taken down to paint, and the doorbell rang. It was a young Asian man, and he said he had seen the sign in our yard and asked if he could look around. I didn't know why not, so I let him in and showed him around. He asked how much the house was, and looked it over, and he asked how soon we could move out. I told him we were moving at the end of May. He then asked who he needed to call if he wanted to buy the house, and I told him to call the number on the sign. So he wrote down the number (which was bent over backwards because of the wind) and left. I thought that was kind of odd.
The wind was so strong last night, it blew open our front storm door and bent the hinges and even tore part of the frame. It's going to have to be replaced.
Today is Joy's birthday party. She's having a sleepover, and we're going to order pizza and watch "The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe." We had one showing this morning, so the house is already clean, and we also have to go to an Easter egg hunt this afternoon. I'd rather not go, but Erick said I have to.
We are having an open house for Erick's graduation, and you are all invited! It's going to be on May 4th, and we're going to be cooking out and serving hamburgers and hot dogs all day. It's going to be at our house. I hope you can all come! We bought a big gas grill for him a couple of weeks ago so we could do this. They'll be cake, too. Let me know if you need directions!
We're still fixing up the house, but we've made a lot of progress. The number of showings have slowed down considerably, but our realtor says she intends on selling the house before we move. That would be nice, but it might show better empty. It's hard trying to keep it in tip-top shape all the time.
Because we got it on the market earlier than we intended to, it kind of forced us to get busy and get the rest of the work done. We had a three-page check list of things to do to the house, which is down now to about a half-page. Because we have so much work done already, we decided to go ahead and move our moving date up some to the week before Memorial Day. We figured it would be easier than trying to move during a holiday.
Erick's family is coming down for the graduation! I'm so glad they are going to be able to come. They're coming down on the 2nd of May and I'm not exactly sure how long they are staying. I'm really looking forward to moving back with family. I miss them. I will miss the people here, but it's no good trying to stay in Springfield because of the people anyway, because they're going to move if we don't. It's amazing how many people I've become friends with here have already moved on. I'm glad we made good friends here, though.
I miss having Moderator under my picture.
