Last night a horrible screaming sound woke me up at about 4:30 A.M. It sounded like something was in pain. Erick and I grabbed our glasses and went to look out the back, and there was a big black dog in our chicken coop. He grabbed his pellet rifle, since he doesn't have a real gun, and shot it a couple of times. It yelped and tried to get out of the coop but couldn't get out, so Erick went down to open the door. It started to growl at Erick and I yelled at Erick to get back up to the deck. Finally the dog found the door and took off. Erick threw a stick after it and I yelled at the dog to "git outta here!" He took off. I couldn't believe how fast he ran, trying to get away. We thought at the time he'd killed one of the three remaining chickens, but this morning she was moving. She's in pretty bad shape, though, and can't fly up to the pole where she likes to roost. The ducks had all flown out of the coop when the dog came in, so they are all okay.

Erick had started a new chicken coop just yesterday. This one is too flimsy and just can't keep the dogs out. The new one is going to be bigger and stronger. We've got more baby chicks ordered, and they should be shipped in September. I'm going to have to buy eggs today when I go shopping today for the first time in months. It's been nice having all the eggs I can handle, but they aren't even laying any right now. Yesterday we ran completely out of eggs, and I had to substitute flax in the cornbread for the eggs.

I just found out that I'm an aunt again. My brother's wife just had a baby today, a little girl. I now have two nephews and four nieces. For so long Erick and I had the only grandchildren in the family, but now his mom has ten grandchildren with one on the way, and my parents now have eight grandchildren. Which is kind of funny, because my parents and his parents both have the exact same number of kids as they do grandkids now.

My brother and his wife also just moved to the house we used to live in. I'm glad that someone's able to get some use out of it after all the work we put into it, but I do hope for their sake that they don't experience any problems with the plumbing. Since their family is considerably smaller, maybe they will be able to wash their laundry, etc., without overloading the septic tank. And maybe they'll have dryer weather than we had. I think floods just follow us around or something!

I just realized something. Not only that, but my parents have eight kids--6 girls and 2 boys, and they have eight grandkids--6 girls and 2 boys. My in-laws have eleven kids--6 girls and 5 boys. At present time they have ten born grandchildren--6 girls and 4 boys. My sister-in-law is pregnant again, and if she has another boy that will bring it up to 6 girls and 5 boys.

I have six kids--4 girls and 2 boys. I have six nieces and nephews--4 girls, and 2 boys.

The Creation Museum in Kentucky - 8/2/2008 9:11:47 AM

Yesterday was Sarah's 9th birthday, and we went to the Creation Museum in Kentucky. We found out that senior pastors and their spouses get in free, and their children get in half price, so we were all able to go for just over thirty dollars.

It is a really nice museum! They didn't spare any expense. It's in a beautiful facility, has the most amazing landscaping, and the displays are state of the art. Here is a picture of the building from the nature trails across the pond:

There is a walk-through museum that tells the story of creation, and the affects on the world through the fall, demonstrates how the church has been negatively affected through the acceptance of evolution and the rejection of the Bible, and then ends with a video presenting the gospel called, "The Last Adam." There are some amazingly beautiful displays in this section. They have one room that shows the Garden of Eden and is filled with trees and flowers and animals, with Adam naming the animals.

As you walk through you can see the Tree of Life and the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil, and Adam and Eve as they are deceived and rebel against God. This is Adam and his son working his garden after the ground has been cursed.

The Noah's Ark room and the flood room were my favorite parts. There is a wall that is a portion of the ark, and Noah and his sons are building it, and the wives are making baskets.

In the next room there are dioramas showing the ark being loaded, the insides of the rooms, the ark floating and little tiny people on the tops of the mountains in despair, and more.

There is a video showing the perspective of various people as a giant tsunami rises up and the flood begins to swallow the land. It just gives me the chills to watch it.

I was really impressed with the museum. They were not at all shy about proclaiming Jesus throughout everything they did. It's more than just a Creation Museum, it's a Christian Museum. There were so many people there, too! I had read critism in the past that Ken Ham had overbuilt this, that he'd never get his money back because no one was going to want to spend money to go see such an overtly Christian display, but it was packed. There were people waiting at the doors before it opened, and it only got more crowded as the day went by. They had to open an overflow theater to get everyone in to see "The Last Adam", which was one of the best presentations of the gospel I'd ever seen. Ken Ham and the people at AnswersinGenesis are doing a work of God there at the Creation Museum, and if you get the opportunity to go, you should go and take your unsaved friends with you.

I've been canning and freezing food all day. We put up green beans, corn, zuccinni, and pickles today. I'm so tired! We aren't finished yet, either. We have some neighbors that put out a huge garden, and they have given us about half of everything in their garden. Ours is big too, but it was stunted because of the flooding. Theirs is beautiful and a couple of weeks ahead of ours, and they planted stuff we didn't, too. They've been sharing a lot of their produce with us, which I'm grateful for, although I am quite tired right now. We've done more freezing this year instead of canning, since I don't have access to a pressure canner. We have a big freezer that someone gave to us before we moved, and we're filling it up with food.

Wireless internet! - 8/5/2008 4:56:54 PM

We have wireless internet now! We actually had signed up for wireless through the company we already had for dial-up, but the guy came to install it today and said it wasn't going to work for us. Too many trees--we wouldn't be able to get a signal from their tower. He then told us that Verizon has a wireless deal where you plug a little thing into your USB port on your computer, and if you can get cell phone reception, you can get wireless internet. Too bad he doesn't work for Verizon. So we, on the advice of the Joink installation guy, switched from Joink to Verizon. I'm sure his boss would be pleased.

Erick went to Terre Haute and signed us up, and it works great. It took me 75 minutes on the phone with a tech guy to get our e-mail configured, but that's all finished now. I invited him to come have lasanga with us as a thank you, but I think he's too far away. I don't know what state he was in, actually. It would be funny if he actually showed up. There would be extra, anyway, since Joy's away at camp this week. Actually, I think I'll just have seconds. I really like lasagna.

I wish I had more time to explore all the things I can do with fast internet, but I need to go fix that lasagna. Toodles!

The day after I we got our wireless internet, I returned to moderating. I've missed it. I'm covering the Science & Origin folder this time around, although I'm also helping in Finances and Ministry Leaders.

Joy came back from camp last night, and Jay and Erick left for a Royal Rangers camp today. They'll be back Sunday afternoon. Two of our church members are going to be preaching for the Sunday services.

We went to the State Fair yesterday. Jay had a free ticket, since his Weather project went, and one of my sisters ended with an extra ticket so she let me use it. Some friends from church took the rest of the kids, and Erick and Jay and I went. It was nice not having to keep an eye on all of them in that crowd, although Jay is enough of a challenge by himself sometimes.

His weather project got a blue ribbon, so he did really well. I'm glad I had him re-do his poster before he sent it. I saw my sister's craft project there, too. She re-bound her copies of Ted Dekker'r "Red", "White" and "Black". She does a beautiful job of book-binding.

We played a game of miniature golf, and Jay beat both of us. We fed animals at the petting zoo, watched a horse show (the kind where they are all dressed up and pulling fancy wagons) and ate fair food. It was a rip-off, but at least we had brought our own water and didn't have to pay $2.50 for a drink. I bought a giant tenderloin sandwich for $6.50 and ended up dripping a big blob of mustard on my jeans. Later on we bought doube-dipped ice cream cones.

We did a lot of walking, and I'm a bit on the sore side today, but not too bad. In a little bit we need to go pick up the rest of our family, and there will probably be more canning to do later on today.

We had a nice weekend--Erick's sisters came down to visit again. We moved school from Friday to Saturday afternoon so we could do something fun on Friday with everyone, and we went bowling. The youngest three used the bumpers in their lanes, and they had the highest scores. Rachel and Abby tied, and Timothy had the second highest score. Of the rest of us that didn't have bumpers, Erick had the highest score, but I was the only player that got a strike, so I didn't feel too bad.

The big news is that our church got Power Point. We don't have it all set up yet, so we'll be using the projector this week, but we are now in the 21st Century. Yes, Shiloh is on the cutting edge now. We saw some of the former pastors in Walmart that were here for eighteen years, and they said that Shiloh has always been on the cutting edge--when they were there, they were the first church in town to use cassette tapes! Now we're the first church in town to have Power Point. We just have to get the cables and everything and get things all hooked up. We could cobble things up and do a half-way job on it for this morning, but we decided we'd rather it make its debut all finished and ready to go.

We've been doing a lot of canning in the past couple of weeks. We put up about 45 quarts of tomatoes yesterday, and a bunch more beans today.

It's kind of funny the way Erick and I do things like canning together. It's funny because even though we've both said things about the way we were raised and the way that our parents did things that "We weren't going to do it that way!", when it comes to other things, we do it just like our parents did it.

They say that the older you get the smarter your parents become. The only problem is, our parents didn't always do things the same way! I think our parents would laugh if they could hear Erick and I arguing over how to do things. "Well, MY mom always did it this way!" "Well, MY mom always did it that way!" We're lucky we haven't had a knock-down, drag-out fight over it yet. His mom always put up lots of tomato juice, because she used tomato juice in chili and soups and other things, and so tomato juice was a staple. My mom always put up lots of whole tomatoes, because she used them in chili and soups and other things, and so whole tomatoes were a staple in everything. Of course I think my mom used the tomatoes better and he thinks his mom did.

It's so funny how even if we disagree with our parents on issues how their parenting is still the standard we hold to when we are trying to figure out how something should be done.

We ended up doing half tomatoes and half juice. After all, I do use quite a bit of both in my cooking!

Last Thursday we started back to co-op. It was also Timothy's fourth birthday. I'm teaching ballet for the first and second hour, and it's going really well. I had eight girls in my first class (grades 3-5) and 7 in the second glass (grades 1-2). Rachel is in the younger class, too, even though she's only in Kindergarten. The kids are allowed to go up or down a level if something interests them, although the kids in that group get first priority.

For Tim's birthday we had been planning on going up to the Children's Musuem, and then we decided to expand that a bit and go up and visit our parents, too. Since it was so close to Labor Day we made a mini-vacation out of it. We drove up Monday and spent Labor Day with my family, who always has a party, and then spent the night there. We went to Erick's parents' on Tuesday, and then on Wednesday we went to the Children's Museum and made it home in time to fix up a meal and bring it to the fellowship dinner at church.

I got to see my newest niece at my parents' house--that's my brother's baby. She's so cute! She sleeps all the time. My sister and her husband and baby had just moved up to Chicago to go to Officer Training School for the Salvation Army, so they weren't there. I won't get to see her until Christmas.

My dad's book binding business is really taking off. My dad has been working hard the last year to expand his business. He's sold or given away almost all of his books. He's down to about 3,000 now. With all of his extra space he's built extra presses and more workbenches. Two of my sisters and one of my brothers work part time for him now, 20-30 hours a week, and he pays them minimum wage at this point. Eventually he wants to bring them all on full time and pay them a decent wage. To begin with he was paying them just a few dollars a week for the experience, but they are all really good at what they do now. One of my sisters exhibited some of her work at the 4-H fair this year and won grand champion.

My mom worked really hard last year promoting the business, and their orders have increased five-fold. Dad actually had her stop the advertising because they were getting too much business, but the orders have still been increasing. He has about a hundred book in line waiting to be bound, but with my siblings all working the business they have been able to decrease the waiting time from 8 weeks to 6 weeks. Most bookbinders have a wait time of about 1-2 years!

The History Channel called them because they needed a book bound, and they said, "We assume you're the best, because your ads are all over the internet!" Dad told them he didn't know if they were the best or not, but that he was their best bet for getting the book done within their deadline (a month and a half).

I'm really proud of my parents for building this business up and making it work. They've always been entreprenuers. This is the fourth business they've owned that's been successful. They've tried a couple of other things that haven't worked, but they keep thinking and keep working. My parents haven't had a "real" job since I was probably 5 or 6.

I guess we have a dog now. Someonedumped off a dog yesterday while we were in church. I guess this used to happen to the former pastors all the time--they were up to nine at once at one point.

It's a female, she looks like she's been abused. She's got some scars. I think she's a Boxer. She's friendly, but a bit shy at first. She doesn't jump up on anyone.

She tore up the trash yesterday, and I told Erick he should call the county and ask if there's any animal control around here. I went shopping today expecting that's what he was going to do. When I came back the kids had named her Caramel and were leading her around on a leash. <sigh> Well, at least she doesn't jump up on people.

Erick and I had a date yesterday. It's been awhile since we'd been out together, and we were both feeling the need to get away together. Some friends of our church watched the kids for the afternoon/evening and we met in town and just had fun together.

The plan was to go to Bogey's Family Fun center and play miniature golf. I'd been there once with the women's group and had a vague idea where it was, but I went with someone else and didn't know exactly how to find it. Erick had never been there. We really didn't have a clue how to get there.

We stopped at Baskin Robbins and got some rasperry truffle sundaes and ate them outside on the little patio tables. It was perfect weather--not too hot, not too cold, and we were the only ones outside. We crossed over to Toys R Us when we were done with our ice cream to use their restrooms, and had fun looking at toys while we were there. We picked up a carnivorous plant growing system for Jay for Christmas.

Then we decided to stop at the Honey Creek mall, since we'd never been there. A saleslady tried to sell me a manicure kit. She was good at what she did, but since I've been through sales training when I tried to be a telemarketer that one time I knew exactly what she was doing. :) I didn't fall for it.

After driving around for awhile and still not finding Bogey's, we stumbled upon another miniature golf place, but it was with black lights. I thought it looked really awesome, but Erick can't handle strange lighting since he had his brain surgeries and so he said no. I was starting to think we weren't going to get to play golf.

Then I had the bright idea of calling directory assistance on the cell phone. I couldn't believe it took me that long to think of that. We called Bogey's, got directions, and were there in two minutes. They were behind Toys R Us. They have a really cute miniature golf course, with blue waterfalls and fountains, and it's cheaper than the black light place anyway. Erick won by five points, but we were even through most of the game.

After that we went to a Christian Book store and we drooled over all the books we wanted. There were several books I showed him that I want for my birthday or Christmas. We did end up buying one book--52 creative date ideas for married couples. We went to Hardees and ate Frisco sandwiches, sitting at one of those tall table with stools that you can't reach the floor from, and cuddled and read our book together. We had chili cheese fries, too, but we couldn't finish them all.

Then we went back and collected our kids and went home. On the way Joy told us the entire plot of Nanny McPhee in one long, run-on sentence.

I've posted this picture before, and mentioned what I'd like to do with it, but I'm posting it again because our church is finally doing it. We're raffling off this quilt to benefit Voice of the Martyrs.

We took it to the Seafood Festival in our town last weekend and I've sold about $50 in tickets so far, but we're hoping to raise around $800 to send to Voice of the Martyrs. I'm also going to be taking it to our homeschool group, sending letters to some of our local churches, and taking it to the Women's Convention in Indianapolis that our denomination puts on in November.

If anyone here would like to buy tickets, PM me. We're selling them for a dollar each, or six tickets for five dollars. The drawing will be November 15th, in time for Christmas.

I realized I hadn't posted about what's going on with Jay. Last week he went to a Ranger camp, and Saturday showed me a lump on his leg, up near the groin area. We kept an eye on it over the weekend, and by Monday it hadn't changed, so we went to the doctor.

It's an enlarged lymph node, and the doctor said that usually that's a sign of infection in children. They call it "Cat Scratch Fever" although it doesn't necessarily mean it came from a cat. It's just their nickname for it because it can be caused by any sort of cut or scrape, even a cat scratch. She subscribed a broad spectrum antibiotic and he's got to take it twice a day for ten days. Next Wednesday he has another appointment to look at it again, and if nothing's changed she said he might need a biopsy to find out what's going on with it.

So far I think it might be a little less prominant, but it's hard to tell. It's still there, anyway, and he's been on the antibiotic since Monday evening. We're praying that it will go away soon.

I've been a bit lax about posting in my blog lately, so I thought I'd let you know what's been going on lately.

Jay had a follow-up appointment yesterday. The swelling in his lymph node is down, but it's not completely gone. The doctor extended his prescription for another four days, and then she wants to leave it alone for a couple of weeks and then take another look at it. If it's still there, she wants to diagnose it further.

Ballet at co-op is finished for the first six weeks. It's gone well, especially with the 3-5th grade girls. They are really enjoying it. In the younger class I have a few girls that just don't really want to be there, and have had an attitude that has rubbed off of some of the other girls.

I've also received permission from the local Ruritan club to use their building to start a ballet school. I'm planning on starting classes there in January or February.

The Voice of the Martyrs is sending me literature to take to the Women's Convention in November, plus a DVD to show. I'm registered and I can't wait to go. We've raised $96 so far, and I'm hoping to raise a lot more at the convention.

I'm going to be directing a Christmas play at church this year, and I've been taking some neighbor kids to church that live down the road. I think one of them stole some money from my purse last night, though. I called her mom and she's going to find out if she took it.

We had a church party Sunday night and sang songs around the campfire and had a great turnout. One of the older ladies in our church fell into a ditch in the dark, but she was okay.

Erick has a friend from Lousiana that's wanting him to come down and fix his roof, and Erick's considering taking vacation time to go do that. This is the guy that Erick did the siding job for when they were in Bible College together. He's a youth pastor now, and the hurricane damaged his roof. It would be a lot of fun to go down there.

Lately the kitchen cabinet where I keep my bowls and containers has just been in complete disarray. I had purchased some time ago a set of plastic bowls in various sized with lids, perfect for either mixing or storing. Unfortunately, most of the bowls were missing. The kids kept using them as dog dishes or cat dishes. Some of them even ended up in the chicken pen. They would go missing and then turn up weeks later, dirty with teeth marks.

My other containers were turning up missing as well. Even my cottage cheese containers and sour cream containers were missing. I've always washed them out and saved them and used them for leftovers. Back when Erick used to work at Wal-Mart, I'd always pack his lunch in sour cream containers. Some of his co-workers thought it was really strange that he was always eating out of a sour cream container, but they fit so nicely in a lunchbox. I knew it was getting bad when I was putting away groceries one day and picked up a new, un-opened container of sour cream and wondered what was in it.

I hardly had anything left besides lids, and I had plenty of them. One ice cream bucket, 15 ice cream bucket lids. One cottage cheese container, 30 cottage cheese container lids. And so on.

Today I went shopping. I bought myself a set of food storage containers, a new set of plastic mixing bowls with lids, and new dishes for the pets. I threw away an entire garbage bag full of lids and containers, and organized my cabinet. It looks so nice! No one had better take any of my new containers outside or they will face the wrath of Mom.
