The FDA doesn't really monitor truth in labeling like it does in food and pharmaceuticals. In the end, it comes down to the company's honesty and integrity. "Natural" is a buzz word that sells and is exploited by the industry. It is also not a guarantee that the ingredients are pure, are quality, or nontoxic. The FDA does have guidelines, but they are very lax with them and some of their programs are voluntary. They really only monitor if there are problems with a company where they ahve to recall a product. For example, you can have a natural product with urea, which is toxic (a part of urine.) It's still natural, but not something people looking for natural would like to put on their skin. Urea can also be synthesized, so finding it in an ingredient list doesn't necseearily make the ingredient natural. The label won't make the distinction. Also, some companies sell "natural" products on line and then when you get them, the ingredients list mostly unnatural products. Well, maybe that is my own fault for ordering online (not having access to the ingredient list as I purchased) or not doing my research (trusting the company without any research.) This happened to me the last time I bought shampoo.

It's so hard to find a good truly natural shampoo.

Is there one? I am looking at mine now and eventhough it has lots of good stuff in it, it still has one preservative in it. It is at the end of the list, but still there. I guess they all have to have something to preserve them if they are going to last longer than a week, and I know it takes me WAY more than a week to go through my shampoo. I also know people who will only wash their hair every 5 days. I saw this one woman at a conference. I don't know what she was selling, but her hair was just drop dead georgous. It was long, wavy, black and shiny, but soft looking. Kind of like what you would see in a pantene commercial. So I asked her what she used in her hair, and it was some over the counter shampoo, but she said she only washed her hair once a week. But it didn't look oily. So maybe there is something to be said about plain old water.

Sometime back, there was a thread on how often we wash our hair. A few ladies went unreal time periods between washings. I believe they said that they trained their scalps to not produce as much oil by gradually increasing the time between washings. I've experinced with facial care that using too strong products can cause an increase of oil production. I imagine something similar goes on with shampooing in some cases.

That sounds like putting mess into your hair instead of cleaning it!!

How do they get the honey out???? Wow, and my husband complained when I changed our bread from white to wheat or whole grain.

Apparently with the grease from your head it rinses out pretty easily, but I know several of them also do apple cider vinegar rinses.

I know that if your kids get head lice, you can use olive oil instead of that chemical shampoo. But I haven't had that happen yet so I don't know.

I use this shampoo base: http://www.emporiumnaturals.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=18&products_id=88 I don't add any fragrance or essential oils to it though because I decided that was too risky for me since I don't know what I'm doing. We both like it, though it doesn't have the best scent. It's not a bad scent, just different. Smells like oils mostly. It cleans and lathers well. We tried several commercial "natural" shampoos before finding this one. We hated all of the other ones we tried.

We have also used California Baby shampoo in the past, and might switch back since it's cheaper to buy in bulk. We don't really use much shampoo, 16oz will last us several months so the cost isn't really such a factor. They are natural and chemical free and pass the test of even the crunchiest crunchies LOL! I also really like the Burt's Bees Baby shampoo bar.

Another thing is not to use too much. I think in the past couple of years, I have become more aware of how much shampoo, facial cleanser, body wash, and things like that I actually do use. While I am sure the amount doesn't matter to the skin, it is less going down the drain and back into our water source.

ORIGINAL: Grace-N-Mercy One thing I highly recommend is Avon's All-in-one Anew cream. You can't go into a store to buy it, unless you have an Avon store, but you can order it online. I've been using it for a few years now since I noticed my first tiny wrinkle and it has done my skin a lot of good. They have a whole line, but this is all I'm using for now. I've also started using Avon's dermabrasion and it's wonderful since I don't usually exfoliate - my skin has been so much smoother since starting. Has anyone tried it? Have you heard anything positive or negative? I just wanted to point out that one of our lady friends on here sells Avon on the internet. You all know Roberta (DenimDiva)? HERE is her Avon site.

Well I have to admit that I only wash my hair 3x per week, though do use a conditioner and rinse well every day. With it being so dry here in Colorado, my hair would look like chicken hair. My hair is normal, so it works for me. I just recently bought a tea tree oil shampoo from a local beauty supply store, it makes a great clarifying shampoo, feels cool and tingly on the scalp, and I even like the minty 'flavor' of it. It feels really good. But if you go that route, I would recommend using a deeper conditioner just afterwards, as it does strip all the excess product, sebum and oils out of your hair. My hair looks smashing if I do say so myself. Oh, and I only use it once a week. One poster mentioned Burt's Bees, I happen to love their product line. I am really enjoying this thread. TY S

I love leave in conditioners. I need to do my face and my nails. It has been way too long since I have actually taken the time.
