TammyisBlessed~

We found out at our 20 week ultrasound that Joshua has spina bifida, so I'll have to have the c-section and he'll need surgery after he's born.

My daughter's best friend (4) has spina bifida- are you already talking to the spina bifida association? They have been a great resource for them. Emma is a sweet girl and I love having them play together- Emma got crutches last fall and now she is a speed demon (although not at the moment since she had another surgery last month, but she's doing great at her recovery).

Manda thanks for the suggestions, I'll have to get some the the granny panties lol. I'm a little nervous about the operation, I hope the recovery isn't too bad! Hopefully I'll be distracted by having Joshua here that I won't pay too much attention to the pain.

Thank you for the prayers! I've been in touch with the Spina Bifida Association and they've been a good source of information to us. I've also been doing a lot of reading about his condition, so some of the shock of getting the news is starting to wear off Plus I have so much peace from the Lord that everything will work out and be okay.

That's neat about your friend's daughter, I hope she heals quickly from her surgery!

Heather

Are you having the Caesarean by general anaesthetic or by local (spinal or epidural)?
And at how many weeks are having it?

If it will help, I can tell you a bit about my own recovery.

my friend that had C's twice says the key to a quick recovery is getting up afterward and not laying there too much. (I can attest to that being true with vaginal deliveries, but I haven't had a C so I don't know for sure....that's just what she always says)

HMB, you can shave yourself at home and they won't have to do it at the hospital. I shaved myself, with no mirror (I'm sure didn't do that great of a job), and they didn't need to shave any more hair when I got to the hospital. You will probably need to shave about an inch of hair off the top.

I've had two C-sections, and honestly don't think the recovery is anything compared to the agony of third trimester pregnancy aches and pains. And getting to skip over labor isn't too shabby either The first day is probably the worst, but you should still have great IV drugs in your system to take the edge off the pain. I was out of bed within about 10 hours of both of my C-sections.

Sarah is right, get up out of bed early and move frequently. Walk the halls as much as the staff will allow. The incision is so low, you might be surprised how much you can move without experiencing pain. Some ladies find it helps the pain to press a pillow into the incision area when getting out of bed, a chair, and walking at first.

Today hospitals really try to make the c-secion mirror the natural birth experience as much as possible. I held both my babies minutes after birth. I was able to nurse my son while he was still bloody & messy. I could have cut the cord myself if I wanted to My experience may not be like your experience, but I can assure you the staff will do everything they can to put you at ease and make your baby's birth special and memorable for you, and not just a medical event.

Aw, that must be hard. But it's good that the doctors could find that out so early... it gives you time to prepare emotionally and the doctors can help your little guy better, knowing ahead of time what to expect. Still hard, though, I'm sure.

Gabe felt the baby this morning! It's the first time he's kicked hard enough and we've had the timing down well enough for him to feel our little boy. Pretty exciting. Also, since school starts soon, Gabe got me a cell phone so that I won't have to be so nervous driving to and from work. It's just a pre-paid cell with 150 minutes/month, but I'll feel a lot better driving through Dallas at 6:00am if I have a phone with me I have these visions of me going into labor on the side of the road, in the dark, and having no way of getting ahold of him

(((((Heather))))))). I spent a lot of my childhood in a Shriners Hospital. There were a lot of children with spina bifida being treated there. I'll be praying for your family and your little one!

c-sections -- getting up is good, but not TOO much walking the day after, or you'll really feel it for several days afterward . . . . . . but getting up soon afterward really does help. Just don't push yourself. (I've had two)

Just curious, honestly just curious: How soon and what was your first pregnancy symptom? With Hunter it was just a missed period, but curious if anyone knew before that with their pregnancies.

With Isaac -- I had some cramping/twitches I'm pretty sure was implantation. I took a test at 9 DPO and it showed up +. My breasts were also pretty sore.

No symptoms with Isabel. She's sneaky like that.

The only time I ever threw up was at 9 DPO... I got a +HPT at 10 DPO. I was also REALLY hoping I was pregnant, so I might have just made myself sick with anxiety, though

sorry I have been out of touch for a while but was catching up with and read about the c-section question...
My first C section was emergency and my son was taken to the NICU straight away and I was recovering that I didn't get to see him untill the next morning.. that was the reason why I got up so early..no one had to tell me....and I walked around for too much...so after I went home I was really hurting...
my second c section was planned so I was much more calm...and I too did get up the next day but I didn't walk around too too much...and even though it was still painful... it wasn't as bad as the first time around. I think a lot of it also had to do with being prepared and had it all planned.

Also, I tried to be a hero the first time around and I didn't take ANY pain killers.. this time around, at the hospital when I was hurting I asked for a pain killer and at home the first two days I still took stuff for the pain too...and I think that helped on the recovery.

Manda is right about the grandma undies..but the good thing at the hospital is they give you those disposable mesh undies....they are sooo comfy and no worries about staining cause you just throw them out.. the hospital gave me a few to take home also so they came in handy.

I went home in the same clothes that I went to deliver in.. they were nice and loose and they made me feel good and comfy.

I hope I have helped in some way and if you have any more questions please ask again and I will try to answer..

Sherry

(((Heather))) I'm sorry to hear about your son's condition! I hope that they are able to correct it quickly and that it's a mild form

Chelle - I think I was nauseous before I tested. I was *definitely* nauseous the day I tested and my worst day of nausea was at 14 DPO, so if I hadn't known it was a possibility, that would have been the day I was expecting my period.

Amy - I don't think I said this yet, but Congratulations on the boy!!!

with most of mine I haven't had a period to even judge by.....just had to go with the regular pregnancy feelings (sore breasts, irritable, tired, smells getting to me, sickness, etc). Different with every kid though.

It's funny ... with me the dead giveaway was horrendous morning sickness starting the day of implantation. And also an overwhelming urge to shop for baby clothes .... Most of the time, the tests wouldn't show a positive until I was at least two months along, sometimes even more than that ... although *we* knew it!

For me, with Nadia it was the severe abdominal cramping. Like I had to stop what I was doing and double over for about 15 minutes at a time. The pain was so bad that when it subsided I had to rest from it. I've never had pain like that. Well, of course there is labor, but you know what I mean. Unexplained pain, that is....

With Nadia, nausea at implantation. I couldn't finish eating supper and by the third evening of that Andrew suggested I take a pregnancy test. Lo and behold I was pregnant. Men are so smart.

So how much does baby gain from here on out each week? I know some things say I should be eating such and such calories, but seriously I just can't get that all in in a day! I eat when I am hungry and it's healthy, do I need to worry about anything else?

ETA: Baby is growing fine, my midwife thinks he is already 5lbs!

Continue what you're doing! As long as you're eating a variety of healthy foods and are eating when you're hungry, that's enough!! I was never overly hungry with Gwen ... and I didn't force myself to consume more foods. Remember, the extra calories needed is only an apple and half a PB sandwich a day - not very much!!

(((Heather))) I'm so sorry to hear about Joshua's diagnosis- praying along with everyone that it is mild and can be easily remedied by surgery after birth. Lots of ((hugs)) to you and your family.

Kathryn, I've read they should be gaining about 4 oz./wk. I wouldn't worry about your food intake too much- all you can do is eat what you can hold! Eating lots of small meals as opposed to three big meals should help.

Well, I am home safe and sound from my drive to NH and back (Dave had to work, so I drove by myself). The shower was wonderful and I got to spend a lot of quality time with my mom, which is a rare treat (she still has little ones at home). I'm so glad to be home with my hubby and 15 min. from my birthing center.

I started having contractions on the drive up- not just tightening of my stomach, but more like moderate period cramps. I'm hoping this means he's gearing up to arrive a bit early, but we'll see...

No line jumping!!! Me first!!! (Although I must say, don't necessarily count on him arriving early ... I've been cramping and contracting like that for weeks! And this is #5 so you'd almost think he'd come early ...) Most likely your body is just moving into the labour prep stage ... softening and whatnot.

I think I hold the record for line jumping!
