I agree with your dh about the stereotypes. Yes, I'd agree, there are. But you know something, even though it is full of them, it's also a reminder of the blood, sweat and tears that those men put in to do what they did ~ and that counts for something. Not sure I'd watch it again, but it was a good eye-opener I should read up about what from the movie was truth and what was for the movie. I asked Dh about it, and he doesn't remember a thing about it - in that he doesn't remember even hearing anything about it. The thing was, they were too poor that it wasn't on their radar. He says he's sure it was a big deal to the people who were able to know about it and see it, but they didn't have a tv so they had no clue it was going on. And that they didn't know anyone who saw it either because everyone around them was the same. I think it annoys him that people watch the movie and think that it's a portrait of his home when it's not.

A movie with stereotypes in the case of Cool Runnings would have been placed there for humour. It doesn't try and claim to be the whole truth and nothing but the truth, its a comedy BASED on a story that happened. We have movies all the time that take the mickey out of Australians, we just laugh it off when its in a comedy. I think if it was in a movie claiming to be historically correct then maybe you have a point about being angry.

My husband isn't angry about the movie, he doesn't care that it was made, and it's a feel good story to tell, it just makes a bigger deal out of it than it was in Jamaica at the time. And he also doesn't care to see stereotypes of Jamaicans on screen (or phony accents). The other thing to remember when it comes to stereotypes in a movie is, even if they are placed there for humour, while you may laugh it off as a silly stereotype, I may think that is how all Aussies are in my limited knowledge of Australia. And sometimes that is a dangerous thing. I have a question for the British ladies: We have all sorts of British people hosting reality shows here as the "experts." I'm wondering if they actually are experts in Britain, or we just think because they have accents they are better at this stuff than us. I'm thinking Jane Dayus-Hinch from Wedding SOS and Sophie Allsop from The Unsellables (that's Kirsty's sister isn't it?)

I should read up about what from the movie was truth and what was for the movie. Ummm... let's see, it was about the Jamaican 4-men bobsleigh team who got together for the 1988 Winter Olympics! quote:
A movie with stereotypes in the case of Cool Runnings would have been placed there for humour. The question is, who's humour? Many could see it as a slur towards the Jamaicans. They'd sit and laugh at the fact 3 guys tripped up in the qualifier for the 100m, and in doing so, 2 others and the fact that the 3, together with a go-cart driver got together with a disgraced American bobsled Olympic winner to enter the games ~ without a sled! I chose to get online and look further. There's a huge difference between the fact and the film. I see courage, guts, inspiration and determination in that film, together with disbelief that these guys could do what they did (which is understandable, if anyone had said before the games that some 18-year-old British girl would win 2 golds and break the longest standing world record during the Olympics, few would have believed them). There are many films that are based on fact. Facts are generally changed because of the number of people involved (like the Great Escape and many other war films) There is little fact in this film. It is a great story ~ and sticking to more of the truth wouldn't have detracted from that ~ and I'm pretty sure there would have been plenty of opportunities for humour in it too.

I couldn't say, I've never heard of those programmes, let alone seen 'em! They are Canadian shows so you probably won't ever see them, but I was wondering if those people who host them are big name people in England (like Kim and Aggie....or are they wannabe Kim and Aggies?)

I knew we were being had! Sending us "British experts." Oh well....Wedding SOS is still a good show, I'll just throw stuff at the host when she comes on screen (apparently she is a big wedding planner from Britian - even royal weddings...oooh, aaaah - but maybe just not exciting enough to get her own tv show there.)

lexie, I know what your husband means...I'm not FROM the country, but most of the stereotyping comes from the people hanging around the tourists when the cruise ships dock, etc. The crowd that hovers over the tourists as they go sightseeing for the day. It was kind of an alarming experience for me, but I also know that if you were to "cruise" to the states or probably any country, the same stereotyping would happen. I have 2 friends from Jamaica and they in no way, shape or form resemble the people I saw sitting around smoking their dreadlocks.

And SuperNanny! I have heard of! I suspect that SuperNanny, How Clean is Your House, the Hotel Inspector and ilk have a lot in common with each other. The first is often using the outsider's eyes ~ they will see things someone who is involved doesn't see and they won't be worried about saying it because they're not involved. How many parents tell their children 'I'm warning you' and when the child continues 'I'm warning you' and so on? How many of us know that it's easier to keep on top of cleaning, than it is to come from behind? Even if we've never stayed in a hotel before, we know what we'd like from one ~ a clean room, neatly decorated, without things falling apart on us! These people are generally often very good in their field and they've often also got personality as well ~ makes it great viewing for TV. I enjoy SuperNanny, Nanny911 and How Clean is Your House? Honestly, they seldom tell me anything that I didn't already know, but they do have some tips that I would've never thought of.

How Clean Is Your House always gives me something I can do that I didn't know before...I am so amazed at what a little baking soda and salt can do. I even have a pair of those rubber gloves sans the muppet hair of course. But when I use them, I seem more prone to clean a little deeper without fear of harming the skin on my hands. I also love You Are What You Eat...a definite motivator and one show that helps me with the different terms for specific items like chips and crisps. Although I have not figured out what a stone is yet - some measurement of weight, but I can't quite pinpoint it.

But we don't get so much nowadays. I don't know if I have ever seen any Canadian programmes, but have seen some Nature programmes filmed in Canada. I do like Ryan Styles though - he's Canadian, I think.
