This ongoing support thread is for men and women who are seeking support, encouragement, assistance or ideas to help them achieve their healthy weight loss / weight management goals. This isn't a "Dieting" thread per se ... because we've all been told that "Diets don't work, you have to change your lifestyle" .... but the focus of this thread is specifically for people who are wanting to lose pounds/inches .... whether it be a few pounds, or a hundred!

While we would like this thread to be positive, supportive, encouraging and motivational, keep in mind that people have strong differences of opinions about what weight loss methods are healthy/preferable, and ones that are not. And, you should expect to hear from posters who may think that what you are doing isn't healthy. All we ask is that you hear them out and that everyone be civil and respectful.... with the underlying theme that we are all brothers and sisters in Christ, seeking to encourage one another in healthy weight management goals.'

If you feel comfortable posting your stats, feel free to do so ... but it is not a requirement. (And for those of you who are seeking a Women's Only thread, there is one located in the Women's Only forum.) This thread is specifically open to men as well as women.

Starting Weight: 369.0 pounds
Current Weight: 286.2 pounds
Loss to Date: 82.8 pounds
Age: 42 years old
Health issues: diabetes, asthma, hypothyroidism, high cholesterol
Method: Counting calories, lots of veggies, whole grains, lean proteins. (No specific diet, just good basic nutrition)
Exercise: treadmill, bike, will add swimming in summer

Can I ask what kind of weights you are doing? Any that I could be doing at home with smaller hand weights, perhaps?

Actually I just started back on weights. I have hand weights 5,8, 10 and 12 and a resistance band. Even though I have a gym membership the weight room is still kind of packed at the times I go.

I am starting with bicep curls, pushups, tricep dips, chest fly,s lunges and squats . also have a bosu ball which is half a stability ball that you can use for a lot of exercises.

about.com has a lot of exercise info that doesn't require a lot of equipment.

Thanks for starting this thread, Harvie!

I've been struggling to lose weight most of my life, but I'm finally having great success with losing weight by starting and staying on a low carb healthy eating plan since December 2005. I started out really strict at first, then realized I was losing weight too fast, so I added in a few more carbs to slow my weight loss to about two lbs a week. It's been slow going since then, with a one year plateau in 2007, but I'm beginning to lose weight again, so I'm feeling happy about that.

My carbs are not as low as on a typical low carb diet, but at least I don't go home and eat bowls of potato chips and lots of cookies and candy like I used to. My biggest problem is eating carbs and sweets at night while posting here or doing other stuff on the computer. I'm trying out some of Harvie's suggestions for appetite suppressing foods and plan to drink more water and less diet soda, as this increases my hunger.

My stats are:

Before 2005: 315 lbs
December 10 2005: 300 lbs
August 5, 2006: 250 1/2 lbs
January 6, 2007: 239 1/2 lbs
January 2008: 217 1/2 lbs
February 24, 2008: 207 1/2 lbs

Initial goal weights:

199 lbs or below by May 1, 2008
150 lbs by 12-31-2009

Hope this is encouraging to someone!

Harvie, you might want to post that list of appetite suppressing foods and jello suggestions here, in case anyone who posts here needs it.

Hey, Melissa! Welcome aboard!

We're going on a cruise May 3, so I am anxious for March and April to be productive "weight loss" months for me, too! So I think I will hop onto your May 1 mini goal, if I may! I would really love to be 8-10 pounds lighter by then, wouldn't that be just delightful?

I just need to keep reminding myself to take things one meal at a time, one day at a time, and one pound at a time!

WE CAN DO THIS!

HUNGRY? SOME FOODS ARE NATURAL APPETITE SUPPRESSANTS!

CINNAMON has long been known as a natural appetite suppressant.

A study from the late 80s found that eating a single spicy meal can boost your metabolism by up to 25 percent, with the spike in calorie burning lasting for up to 3 hours after you finish eating. New research at Canada's Laval University shows hot sauce with CAPSAICIN suppresses appetite and reduces calorie intake. Men who got an appetizer with hot sauce ate 200 fewer calories at lunch and in a later snack than men who did not.

WATER and TEA can be natural appetite suppressants. Low-sodium BROTH work really well, too.

EXERCISE can be a natural appetite suppressant.

LEAFY GREEN VEGGIES can help, too ... very filling, low-calorie, and full of fiber and micronutrients. Swedish researchers have identified a compound found in green leaves that suppresses appetites and boosts weight loss in lab animals, and could one day be used as a functional ingredient to help tackle obesity. (Spinach, Cabbage, Romaine, Bok Choy, collard greens, turnip greens, mustard greens). Great as between-meal small snacks (watch the dressing) or add a salad to every meal (even breakfast!)

Natural apple cider VINEGAR. In new Arizona State University tests, subjects who took 1 1/2 tablespoons of apple cider vinegar ate 200 fewer calories at the next meal. Probable reason: Vinegar tends to blunt blood insulin levels that trigger hunger. Other research shows eating vinegar or lemon juice, as in salad dressing, with high-carb foods lowers jumps in blood sugar.

PINE NUTS ... studies show that the fatty acids in pine nuts trigger the release cholecystokinin (CKK), a hormone that could help suppress appetite.

OTHER OPTIONS ... cucumbers give a lot of bulk for very few calories (24 calories in a medium peeled cucumber) ... and, if sodium isn't an issue for you, one dill pickle spear is just 5 calories! Don't forget you can have a cup of sliced radishes for 19 calories and a cup of sliced mushrooms for 15 calories!!!

Thanks, Harvie, for starting this thread. I'm starting out again to try to lose this weight. I started back at the end of December and was working hard on my plan, but I lost nothing. The scale moved a bit, but would promptly go back up to where I was. That was very frustrating and I gave up for a while. So here I go again... and I'm ready this time! In fact, I'm heading to Publix in just a few minutes.

I had wanted to lose a considerable amount of weight by Memorial day... I can still make it, but I'm adjusting my goal just a bit. Maybe 15 pounds by then?

My plan is the South Beach Diet, only because it has worked for me so well in the past. My high weight had crept up to 180 lbs, and I lost 40 pounds (and reduced my cholesterol by 30%) by eliminating bad carbs/bad fats and replacing them with good carbs/good fats. I was also taking the stairs at work several times a day. This time around, I'm also cutting out the highly processed foods (sugar-free foods that add no nutritional value)

Something that works as an appetite suppressant for me: sugar-free gum. If I get a craving in the middle of the day, it's sweet enough to be satisfying.

Harvie, is this thread open to people who want to lose size (but not measure it by pounds / weight)?

This thread is for people who want to lose pounds, lose inches, drop sizes, or who have achieved those goals but are now seeking healthy weight maintenance. No need to count calories or see a scale change. It would also be for people who want to see test results improve from changed eating habits (that is, people trying to improve cholesterol, with weight loss as more as a secondary goal).

You raise a great point, though ... that the scale is NOT our only measure of success. Dropping inches, dropping chins, dropping sizes, better health, clearer skin ... there are many wonderful benefits of changed/improved/healthy eating.

We're an inclusive, mellow little thread ... jump on in!

You know . . . I've seen you around the forums but I don't really know you that well; we hang-out in different places and haven't had a lot of interaction with each other.

But I am really loving your sense of humor ("dropping chins" gave me the giggles) and I think I'm gonna really enjoy getting to know you better.

Thanks for your graciousness!

Hey, I had a trike for a while last fall ... it was fun! Then my husband bought me a nifty lime green and purple bike, so I sold my trike on Craigslist and I know it went to a good home.

I would love to be a few sizes smaller than I currently am, but that will come -- in time. Since I am actively attempting to lose weight (still), I am trying to avoid the urge to keep buying clothes, so I have some stuff that's getting baggy (yay), and some smaller stuff I bought last year on clearance that I hope will fit this summer. It sure is frustrating how much brands vary when it comes to sizes.

My real weight loss goal ... to weigh what my driver's license says I weigh! LOL!

I guess I'll join in, too. I need lots of support b/c my body loves to hold onto it's pounds. It takes me about a month of hard work to lose 5 lbs. Losing weight is a huge struggle for me, even when I eat right, including watching calories.

Starting Weight: 160 pounds
Current Weight: 155 pounds
Goal Weight: 125 pounds
Loss to Date: 5 pounds
Age: 33 years old
Health issues: None, but a family history of diabetes
Method: Organic and Natural Diet: whole grains, veggies, fruit, & lean meats. It is my goal to eat 1400 calories/day
Exercise: ice skating 4 hours/week & weight lifting (which I am not currently doing consistently) & Yoga (inconsistently, as well)

What a nice variety of healthy eating and excercise plans represented here already! WOO HOOO! I have some good friends on South Beach Maintenance ... healthy fats/good carbs, and they seem to be very happy with it.

I just looked at a calendar and realized that 9 weeks from Saturday we embark on our 7-day cruise to Alaska (inside passage), and I'd really like to lose 10 or so pounds between now and then, if at all possible. Sometimes my body cooperates with these sorts of goals, and sometimes it doesn't! hee hee hee. If I can just lose a pound a week, though ... that would be fine.

By the way, I have USWIDS (unoffocial sneaky weigh-in days) as well as my once-a-week OWID (official weigh-in day), so will probably report positive events. For some reason, I'm not so keen on posting less-than-positive scale-related events! Posting your weigh-ins, official or otherwise, is entirely optional .... so feel free to share your news, if you want. And for those of you watching inches, sizes, or some other thing, feel free to share -- or not share, as you desire.

And, hey, if you find something really tasty, healthy-eating/diet-friendly, feel free to share. Tonight my dinner includes an organic ear of yellow corn -- just 77 calories for a medium ear ... and it is sooooo wonderful! I also am having cucumber, broccoli, carrots, and lean organic grilled beef. (I limit my beef intake to about 5-6 dinners per month, so this is one of my beef nights!) What are you all eating these days?

We had homemade mac & cheese, corn on the cob, cranberry beans, and sauteed okra for dinner.

5 lbs for a month is great actually. you should normally be losing 1 lb per week

btw for those going on low carb diets, its best if every 3rd day you go on maintenance level in calories. add a dish of whole wheat rice on those days. that will make weight loss more permanent without making it much slower

Sunday, I made one of my favorite dishes - Broccoli Cheese Soup! (I make it with cream cheese)

Last night, it took me about two hours to shop, so I got a rotisserie chicken for a quick & easy dinner, then put the leftovers in the refrigerator. For lunch, I pulled out my Pampered Chef food chopper and made chicken salad. Yum!!

Tonight I'm going to make grilled veggies (zucchini, yellow squash, red & green bell pepper, onions, and garlic cloves), and some kind of meat. For dessert, I'll have a Mocha Ricotta Creme.

Yum, everyone, yum!

What are cranberry beans?

Mr. Scale was my friend this morning, showing a 1.6 pound loss ... woo hoo! That brings my total loss to 84.4 pounds. Yay!!!!!!!

It is generally well-accepted that a slow weight loss of 1.0 - 1.5 pounds per week is often the healthiest and most sustainable. A 1.5 pound per week loss represents an average daily calorie deficit of 750 calories. (A 1 pound per week loss represents a daily calorie deficit of 500 calories.) For the month of February, I am right on track for a 1.5 pound per week loss ... 6 pounds for the month ... which is just fine with me. If I can keep that up for March and April, that would be just delightful. Because people with less to lose have smaller calorie deficits (usually), weight loss can take longer. Of course, larger calorie deficits of up to 1000 calories per day can also be created via inceased exercise, but it is not recommended to have larger than a 1000 calorie per day deficit absent weekly monitoring by a doctor.

Cranberry beans are named for the reddish flecks.

You can see them HERE

Mine were fresh, so they didn't look like that. They were mostly a beautiful shade of pale green with cranberry veining. A few were solid cranberry and a few were only pale green. I had to cook them 30 minutes instead of the 15- 20 suggested.

I used the first cooking method listed on this page, but I increased the time. I plan to cook the rest of the shelled ones on Thurs evening and increase the time by about 5 more minutes.

Tonight we will be eating beef tenderloin (rubbed with fresh thyme) with brown rice and a green salad. Tomorrow, we will have a beef stirfry with brown rice. I'll just make up an asian sauce for it out of stuff I keep stocked in the pantry and fridge.

I lost another 2 pounds, even with the arrival of TOM!!! Of course, yesterday I was too busy to stop and eat much, but even with my schedule, I managed to stay on the plan. The nice thing about this plan is that the blood sugar stays fairly stable and I don't have cravings or intense hunger pains.
