Status: offline 		Yup, weapons! I remember the boys in my neighborhood thought they were tough and would get into these contests to see who could endure my nails digging into their skin the longest!! I wasn't mean, they asked me to do it!

Status: offline 		My nails have never grown well at all...they're rather flimsy and brittle at the same time. And thanks to an industrail accident with a blower fan when I was 19 (where one was ripped off completely and 2 more came off later), they grow out warped. So now I keep them VERY short.

My preference is active length acrylic nails, because they make my fingers look long and slender and make me feel very very feminine. (not much has done that in a life where I grew up at tomboy, then as a teenager and young woman had very low self-esteem, so I value the feeling.) I wear them "french manicured" (natural looking with the white tips) and only wear nail polish (red) at Christmas-time. They are just not in my budget right now, as they need to be filled every 2 weeks...unless you're like Lisa and can do them yourself.

Plus, longer nails make great back-scratchers...which I hear most guys just love!

And in a computer keyboard, the keys are much closer together than on a typewriter, making longer nails easier to use on a typewriter than on a computer--FYI

Status: offline 		I love my nails longer and I stopped the horrible habit of biting them about 7 years ago. However from the amount of typing I do they never seem to get very long. I usually end up breaking one somehow and I cant stand to have nails that aren't all the same lenght so I file down the rest.
I usually only have clear polish on.

Status: offline 		I just got my acrylics back, and boy had I missed them. My nails never get very long on their own, they are healthy, but they always seem to snag on something. Acrylics for me withstand any of the stuff I do, even bowling. I don't necessarily like having to pay to get them done, but I happen to have someone who likes to have back scratches with them, so I'll let him pay to keep them up.

When I was in junior high way back when, I was on the girls basketball team. Unlike boys basketball, girls' basketball where I am from is very aggressive and can get pretty nasty (which is why when we challenged the boys team to a game they refused to play us ). One rule the players made (and enforced) was that all players had to cut their fingernails short. There is nothing worse than someone digging into your skin with nails, then sweat pouring over the gash! Trust me... Other teams didn't have that rule and I experienced the pain firsthand!

Are you kidding?! Back then and who knows maybe now. But guys just adored her. She was petite, blonde, and acted both cute and dumb.

A guy drove over 30 miles to take her out! The only problem was, she wasn't home, rotfl!

Status: offline 		I'm on the other side of things, I refuse to let my nails grow even to the tips of my fingers, let alone past them. Usually clip off all of the white part, but once in a while I leave it to almost 1/16".

Status: offline 		I try to keep mine fairly short - I'm pretty active, and try to play the guitar some. I file them down to about 2mm every two weeks.

However - they grow quickly and in two weeks are nearly 3x that at the end.

I paint them ... mostly to help prevent breaking. I do two coats of the pink part of the French manicure set ... and a clear coat. I don't bother doing the French manicure (the white tips).

And because of this thread, I just went and did something I have never done . . . I measured my fingernails.

From the quick to end of nail, mine are currently, on average, a little over 1/4" long . . . which is actually pretty long for fingernails (although not really long).

I grow my own and have always preferred it that way.

I do not put polish on them, but I do buff and shine them . . Actually, I give myself mini manicures and pedicures every day as part of my routine and I give myself deeper 'cures as is warranted / needed.

And while I don't polish (paint) my fingernails, I do most certainly polish (paint) my toenails.

I've never noticed my fingernails getting in the way of my typing; although sometimes I do tend to let them get a little too long to do calligraphy; and then I just file them down a bit.

The only times they're really vulnerable is if I'm doing a lot of packing or unpacking. When that happens, I just cut and file them down to nothing and then let them grown out again after all the packing / unpacking. That way, I don't risk ripping a fingernail past the quick.

Mine are not that long but painted with acrylic stuff. Fake pink and white, "French manicure" style. I do this since my own tend to snag on things and I break off or I pull them off if nervous. I find that I feel more confident and worry less about them now.

I just dye my own hair and that money I save I use towards keeping my nails looking nice.

Status: offline 		Mine are pretty long. But they are tough and grow fast so they usually get long before I notice it. I rarely paint them because filing and typing is rough on pain, to me anyway, so they are just usually long and natural.

I like to keep mine fairly short, about 1/8", but since they grow really fast, they are usually more like 1/4" most of the time. No polish, just buffing to give a nice shine. Colored polish rubs off on documents and looks really bad. (Just a teenie little pet peeve of mine )

Status: online 		Like hisprincess59, my nails grow out crooked, on one hand (because I smashed the fingers in a sliding glass door when I was a kid). So I generally keep them pretty short, just a little white showing. It's also much easier for typing.

I like the way they look as they're growing, but then they start to go crooked. It's so sad when I have to cut them! I wish there was a way to stop them from growing.

Yes, there was a situation at work in the not too distant past where a female was handling documents and her fingernail polish was "damaging" the copies.

I am reminded of a story that I read back in school about a women (or was it a man) who never cut their fingernails and they grew so large that they curled.
