OK, here's one that I get sometimes from people who only believe in courting and not dating... Don't date a guy until God tells you that he is the husband God has for you... OK, that is a sweet sentimentality and all but... Come on! For those of us who are single at an older age, I'm sure we've had times when we thought God was saying someone was "the one" and it didn't turn out that way. Seems the people who share this advice are the ones who met their spouse at the age of 18-20.

oh, wow! That's a good one! (It's why I'm such a fan of books like "How to Get a Date Worth Keeping" and, for the teenage audience, "Don't Date Naked: Dating Principles Based on the Principles of Ephesians 6.") Because, honestly...how'm I supposed to know if he IS "the one" if I don't date him? hehehe ~Zoey

After asking me whether I'm married, "going steady" or dating anyone, with increasing incredulity at my "no" answers: "Well, don't worry, you'll find somebody." Admittedly, at age 44, I don't hear this much anymore. The Christian version is, "Well, don't worry, God has somebody for you."

ORIGINAL: micah4 Then there's "Maybe god is still working on you" (Working on what? Making me bitter and hopeless? I hope he doesn't have much further to go!) Yeah, I hate this one!!! I've seen married people who were not exactly paragons of spiritual maturity, so I think this cliche is just absurd. A married person prayed over my single mother friend that she would let God be her husband and fulfill all her needs, or something like that. Like it's inappropriate to desire companionship and a good father for her child. I know the woman meant well though.

Would anyone tell a man in the same situation, "let God be your wife and fulfill all your needs"? I think not. That's just... creepy. (er, unless you're a nun)

Oh my gosh, these are all oh-so-true!!! Needstrength, the one about spending more time in church hits the nail on the head! And P31, you are cracking me up!! And you're right, if God said in a loud booming voice, "Marry Him!" I wouldn't waste any time. Now, sometimes I feel like God comes to the boys I like in a loud booming voice and says, "Run away from her!" But that's another thread entirely... And yeah, the whole "Let Jesus meet all your needs" annoys me too. I love Jesus, but He won't be buying me dinner at a nice restaurant so I can have an opportunity to dress up. And when I think of kissing someone, Jesus is NOT on that list. Eww!! wvugrad, I've heard that one before too. And when I try to be "less of this & more of that," it doesn't make a difference anyway! shilo45318 - did that really happen to you???? And JITW - I think another form of that is, "You're HOW old and you're not even dating anyone?" Eek.

"Jesus is the only companion you need." I believe the BEST reply to this type of comment (and there are tons of versions of it!) is: Then you tell me WHY Adam, who walked with God, Himself, in the Garden of Eden (presumable "perfection") was given a companion? Hmmmmm? Stops 'em in their tracks every time! ~:D

Can't remember if this has been said, but... "have you heard that so-and-so who lives in the middle of NOWHERE finally found someone? I just thought you'd be encouraged..." Okay... I live in a town of 200,000 people PLUS surrounding communities. And I'm supposed to be encouraged that someone in a town of 12 finally met someone? (Can ya tell I just got this one recently?) ~Zoey

Zoeybird that would be so irritating! I attend a HUGE gigantic megachurch, one of the biggest in the country, and I sometimes hear this: "You go to THAT church and you can't even get a date?" Eek! Or how about this one? "I know you want to be married but you've got to understand that marriage ... and relationships ... are hard work." This one is often spoken in a patronizing tone and it irritates me. Yes, I know marriages are hard work. Being single is hard work too! I'd much rather have a partner to share the hard work with than deal with it all alone. Doesn't the Bible say 3 strands of a cord are stronger than 1? Yes it does!
