Still haven't met with the teacher, but I know where she lives (four houses down from me). I know this is an insane week at the school so if I don't hear from her, I'll call her at home after Christmas.

We're having a good time just being together. Still some attitude flare-ups, but not nearly as bad as it has been. I'm glad I decided not to focus on school work this month, but on relationships. We all needed it.

Okay, hyperventilating now. The principal calls today and we have to go in tomorrow for our "evaluation" to make sure he belongs in 2nd grade. (Duh...of course he does...he tested at the CS last year, and tested right at or above grade level in everything.)

The only kink would be if he is less than cooperative.

Take a deep breath. There. Now, did you ask if the test he took at the school would count?

She left a message while we were gone this afternoon. I called her at home and am waiting for her to call me back. I think there's some evaluation kind of test he'll do, not a standardized test. I don't know why it bothers me, but it does. I think if they look at the standardized test from last school year and look at his work he's done so far this year, then this would not be necessary. I guess I'm just worried this evaluation is not going to be a good experience and it will sour him on the whole thing. I have no idea why I would think that.

I talked to the principal and she said the evaluation is really just a formality in our case. I will bring his journal and his math book so they can see what he has done so far this year. She'll also go over the rules and how the day flows with him. I'll be meeting with the teacher without Noah, while all the other kids are in chapel.

It's going to be okay. But I am very anxious tonight about the changes coming up and also my surgery...if any one wants to pray, that would be good.

Donna, I'll keep you in my prayers.

I envy you and the ability to put your kids in a good Christian school. I would love to put my kids in one. Mostly because I know they would thoroughly enjoy going. Unfortunately there isn't one close that meets my standards and we do not have the money.
Anyway, hope things go well.

Yeah, we don't have the money either really. We're paying for the rest of this year with tax return money. If he continues there next year, I will either have to have a full time day care kid or work part time outside my home.

The meeting today was not what I had expected. I think he'll do fine. The only major hole is cursive and they will give him a good long time before they expect the same as the other kids who have been working on it since the beginning of 1st grade. Oops.

It is hard for me to even think of letting go and letting someone else have day to day control over my child. I trust the people there, and I know they encourage parents to be involved, but I know it will not be anywhere near the same as him being home with me. He told me after the meeting that he's going to miss me.

Donna, you did not do wrong or miss the mark by not teaching him cursive yet. Different schools/classes/teachers do it at it different times.

He'll probably never use it anyway

That might be a good thing. It could cause him to appreciate you more, at least in the beginning.

cursive in 1st grade?!? I didn't do it until 4th grade. DD2 doesn't do it too much yet in fact and she's in 5th grade. I never use it except to sign my name.

My fifth grader is still struggling with cursive. She had a lot of trouble learning to write at all though. She had dysgraphia.

My second grader is still struggling with writing at all, so cursive is out of the question.

Now that my computer is hooked up AND I have found my Start Write software, Nathan will be beginning cursive and Brandon will be, er, refreshing his cursive

ETA: wrong thread for that last line...which just goes to show you how much my brain is not doing this week!

The Christian school my boys attended didn't start cursive until late second grade. They pushed really hard on it from grades 3-6. After 6th grade, no one cares as long as the writing is legible. Both my boys usually just print now. I heard from an IEW speaker that most men print, and only need to know cursive to read their wife's notes. lol

I remember learning script in 6th grade with Miss Cramer. Talk about an old maid--my uncle had her as a teacher! Ds1 learned in 2nd grade. Ds2 hasn't wanted to learn so I haven't bothered. Ds3 learned a couple years ago, but in 5th grade, he still struggles. Ds4 (3rd grade) still prints like a kindergartener. Whatever. I can read what they write, so I don't care!

Long way of saying--if script is the only thing Noah is behind, ya done good!

Ds told me the teacher said that a First grader writes better than he does!
The school he is going to starts cursive in K or 1st grade. They are using Abeka. I am just wondering what happens when the kids who start out with cursive grow up and have to fill out something that says PLEASE PRINT!
BTW, with a few more comments from the teacher like the one above, I will be VERY ready to jump back onto the ship!!!!!

Thanks, everyone. I know I did the right thing not teaching him cursive yet. We've been working on printing neatly and I find that way more important. I personally never write in cursive, except to sign my name. My handwriting is very neat. My husband writes in cursive and you can't read it. Neatness is more important to me than the method. I would have taught him cursive eventually, if only to be able to read it.

I hope they will be lenient with him on this and give him plenty of time to learn it, especially since English/writing are his tougher subjects already.
It is required that they write in cursive in third through sixth grade, and then they can use whatever they are comfortable with.

Math will be super easy for him since he'll be moving back to the second grade book, which he completed last year. He could have been pulled out and done math with the third graders, but I think it's best for him to have something in this transition that is super easy and he likes. If he needs more challenge, the teacher can give him harder worksheets in the same class. Or maybe he'll work with a student who doesn't do as well in math. Then next year (if we continue with the CS), he'll be in the third/fourth classroom and can more easily do more difficult math if he is still working that far ahead.

I did find that my worries about his writing were pretty much unfounded. They are right now working on writing two or three "juicy" sentences about a topic. Very simple sentences that he should have no trouble with. The teacher seemed impressed with his journal, except the spelling and his trouble spacing the words properly. I told her twice that he knew the journal was not to be graded or corrected...it was to get him over his fear of writing and for me to show him the proper way to write in my responses to him.

Eh...I did my best and I think he'll be okay.

So he's a year ahead in math, but you're worried about him not knowing cursive?! lol Talk about being too hard on yourself.
