Take a deep breath. There. Now, did you ask if the test he took at the school would count?

Donna, I'll keep you in my prayers. I envy you and the ability to put your kids in a good Christian school. I would love to put my kids in one. Mostly because I know they would thoroughly enjoy going. Unfortunately there isn't one close that meets my standards and we do not have the money. Anyway, hope things go well.

cursive in 1st grade?!? I didn't do it until 4th grade. DD2 doesn't do it too much yet in fact and she's in 5th grade. I never use it except to sign my name.

My fifth grader is still struggling with cursive. She had a lot of trouble learning to write at all though. She had dysgraphia. My second grader is still struggling with writing at all, so cursive is out of the question.

The Christian school my boys attended didn't start cursive until late second grade. They pushed really hard on it from grades 3-6. After 6th grade, no one cares as long as the writing is legible. Both my boys usually just print now. I heard from an IEW speaker that most men print, and only need to know cursive to read their wife's notes. lol

I remember learning script in 6th grade with Miss Cramer. Talk about an old maid--my uncle had her as a teacher! Ds1 learned in 2nd grade. Ds2 hasn't wanted to learn so I haven't bothered. Ds3 learned a couple years ago, but in 5th grade, he still struggles. Ds4 (3rd grade) still prints like a kindergartener. Whatever. I can read what they write, so I don't care! Long way of saying--if script is the only thing Noah is behind, ya done good!

Thanks, everyone. I know I did the right thing not teaching him cursive yet. We've been working on printing neatly and I find that way more important. I personally never write in cursive, except to sign my name. My handwriting is very neat. My husband writes in cursive and you can't read it. Neatness is more important to me than the method. I would have taught him cursive eventually, if only to be able to read it. I hope they will be lenient with him on this and give him plenty of time to learn it, especially since English/writing are his tougher subjects already. It is required that they write in cursive in third through sixth grade, and then they can use whatever they are comfortable with. Math will be super easy for him since he'll be moving back to the second grade book, which he completed last year. He could have been pulled out and done math with the third graders, but I think it's best for him to have something in this transition that is super easy and he likes. If he needs more challenge, the teacher can give him harder worksheets in the same class. Or maybe he'll work with a student who doesn't do as well in math. Then next year (if we continue with the CS), he'll be in the third/fourth classroom and can more easily do more difficult math if he is still working that far ahead. I did find that my worries about his writing were pretty much unfounded. They are right now working on writing two or three "juicy" sentences about a topic. Very simple sentences that he should have no trouble with. The teacher seemed impressed with his journal, except the spelling and his trouble spacing the words properly. I told her twice that he knew the journal was not to be graded or corrected...it was to get him over his fear of writing and for me to show him the proper way to write in my responses to him. Eh...I did my best and I think he'll be okay.

So he's a year ahead in math, but you're worried about him not knowing cursive?! lol Talk about being too hard on yourself.
