Hey, I guess I actually listened to six CCM groups (up from the previous 5) during the 80's! Whoo-Hoo!

I guess living in LA there was just too much of the secular stuff overshadowing the CCM. I mean Van Halen played my high school (1976-77), there was the clubs on the Sunset Strip or Hollywood Blvd. that either were punk (late 70's, early to mid 80's), new wave or Heavy Metal. No big PR machine here for any CCM acts save Stryper who played the biggest venues for any Christian act - except for U2. But then, U2 didn't throw Bibles to the audience and have an altar call like Stryper did.

In fact, I just heard that the Troubadour at which I saw many a band is celebrating their 50th anniversary! I wonder what the bands that were playing back in 1957!

It's too bad that none of the great artists/bands that sprang up out of Sacramento during this time - Charlie Peacock, Vector, Undercover, etc. never had a chance to break in LA. I have to wonder what might have happened if they'd had the chance to play the Troubadour or Whiskey.

Oh, you all!!! What fun reading the names of all the artists I listened to as a teen-- very cool. I saw Mylon Lefevre in concert and Randy Stonehill (the greatest!-- Cosmetic Fixation, wah, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ya, ha...) came to our Youth Week to perform with Leslie Phillips. I got to talk to Randy-- he wore some cool shoes! What a great time that was! Russ Taff (He had no medals...)... Oh, and the guy who did "Meltdown at Madame Tosaud's"... I can't come up with his name. He was new wave-y...

Our church was pretty progressive at the time. We also had Brian Duncan come perform one year. He got mad at us because he was performing outside in an amphitheater behind the church and he didn't feel like we were paying enough attention to him (too much wandering around and talking)-- hmm, I think of that every time I hear a song of his.

To the member who posted Daniel Amos... Rock ON!!!

I will say, though, that Michael W. Smith's Big Picture album probably saved my life. I remember listening in the dark and falling asleep crying-- "Nobody knew His greatest ambition was to give His life away...)

God Bless!

You are so right--- Loved him. It was a great time to be a teen listening to Christian music.

Sad about Leslie Phillips, though.

Steve Taylor and Daniel Amos are both great.

I am rather nuts over the DA song "The Pool" right now. Too bad the Alarma Chronicles are so hard to find and expensive.

So right about them both being great. Their influneces (I'm sure I didn't spell that right - sorry!) are still being felt in today's CCM (although not as much as I wish). I lucked out and found a used copy of the Alarma Chronicles at my favorite used CD store a few years ago. I'm still holding out hope that I'll come across a copy of "Darn Floor Big Bite" some day, but I'm not holding my breath. In the meantime, I'll continue wearing out the cassette I have of that little gem.

As for Mr. Taylor - I'd just be happpy if someone would put out the "Limelight" album and film on CD/DVD. Anyone? PLEASE!! Are you listening Sparrow Records? Oh well. A guy can dream, can't he?

I guess you will just have to settle for the live version of "We Don't Need No Color Code" on Now The Truth Can Be Told! for now anyway.

As others have mentioned, that was Steve Taylor - I call him the CCM version of David Bowie. I like "I Want to Be a Clone" and "What You Gonna Do When Your Number's Up".

Anyone remember Mother, Muffler, Mozart, and the Beatles by David Meece? Not really a song - more just a part of a live concert, but very funny although he uses it to make a good point. I love that live album of his this is on.

Yeah - that was classic. Is that where he talks about thinking that Country & Western music was actually called "country & western garbage" because that was the word which always followed when his parents talked about C&W? Talked about that in the thread on country music. He did a gig at my college in the early 80s. A really nice guy.

You're right about that bit having the "country western garbage" in it - and then he says that when a guy told him he likeed country western music, David said "oh, you like garbage?" and then David says that he got his jaw handed to him or something like that! Funny stuff. Yes, I have seen David Meece in concert numerous times and am always ministered to by him. And what an excellent pianist he is, too.

Don Francisco and Lamb
I don't remember Don Francisco being in Lamb!

I will have to ask Joel Chernoff about that the next time he visists our congregation.

BTW, Lamb has re-formed with Ted Pearce taking Rick Levi Coghill's place.

I miss Charlie Peacock.

Ditto the 77s.

I know all these guys are still around, but it just isn't the same . . .

OMGosh!-- I had forgotten the 77s! My best friend's older brother was a promoter back then and I tagged along to a concert-- didn't really know who they were at the time, but I remember them being great.

That's how I was introduced to Daniel Amos, too. I had my concert t-shirt forEVER-- it's probably still packed away with the rest of my teen-age treasures.

I don't know what album it's from, or if it was even on an album, but listen to Steve Taylor's version of "Winter Wonderland" sometime if you ever get the chance. It's a hoot - makes me laugh just thinking about it.

*Nothing* beats Petra's late-80s stuff. I just bought Back to the Street, This Means War, and On Fire on CD (previously I only had them on tape).

I sure wish our younger generation of listeners would be exposed to these albums. The solid Christian lyrics and great rock just don't have any equal in modern music!

I love Petra, although I prefer their early 80s stuff (with Greg X. Volz). But I also like songs of theirs from the John Schlitt era.

My kids are learning to like 80's Christian music because it's what I listen to and put in the car CD player. My DD got an MP3 player for Christmas and she has best of albums by DOn Francisco and the Imperials on it. As well as Superchick and Zoegirl

Not my favorite. Wifey and I had a chance to meet Greg in 88 and he was obnoxious and arrogant.

Sad to say, but I got the same impression of Greg when I met him.

I was hosting a weekly CCM radio show in northern Minnesota in the late 80s - early 90s and got media passes to the Sonshine Festival held yearly in Willmar, MN. One summer, they had GXV and Petra (circa Beyond Belief) on the bill, on the same day, just a couple hours apart. I was thoroughly bummed that there was no "reunion" - not even a little one. Apparenly GVX had to jump a plane to his next gig and couldn't stick around.

I got to interview him earlier in the day before his show, and he came across as a bit abrasive and stand-off-ish.

If you get a chance, check out the interviews on the farewell concert DVD Petra released a couple years ago. You can feel the tension in the air . . .
