Have you heard Rainbow of Love lately???

Yes I have, but by Jim Stewart, from the Pine Ridge Boys. On this song he makes JD, or anyone else I've heard sing this song, sound like an ammature. That man is absolutley amazing!

40 HZ isn't very hard to hit.
At least that was the case when I sang with a condenser mic hooked up to a real time analyzer through the direct out of a mixer. (no, it wasn't an an-echoic chamber, so some of it could have just been room resonance)
But what I have to work on is vocal quallity. I still have a very young, so called "bass" voice that needs some tonal developing. Good Lord willing, it'll become very plesant some day.
As for now, I'll just stick in another CD and keep praticing.

That IS amazing. JD posted a YouTube clip of himself in February 2007. Pretty remarkable...

This range was when I could listen to JD. Also watch his forehead and hair in the full screen version.

The Pine Ridge Boys were very popular in my area many years ago. Jim Stewart was a very good bass singer and hopefully still is. I believe that Miles Cooper is a bus driver these days. Jim Stewart had a son who sang bass with the Singing Americans.

Wish the Pine Ridge Boys were still around...

They still were around a couple of years ago. I have heard much about them lately.

Wow Droog, that guy's got a voice. Nice, full low end. I like it.

Qtman - here we go again, agreeing with one another. I never really cared a lot for JD's singing either. I'd rather have listened to London any and every day.

Perhaps the most overlooked bass singer in gospel music is Will Lane of Driven Quartet. He has a powerful, full voice and can sing quite low. I wish they would feature him more on some classic quartet songs. Talked to him tonight at a concert; he's really a nice guy on top of being talented. I'm sure he has a bright future in SGM.

Some ridiculous techinque of singing... with a mic of course...

That's how the Guinness records of 8Hz and so on were established.

That Youtube clip of Tim Storm is awful. I hope he is better than that in concert!

Also, for some of you guys that know more than I (that would be most), about bass singing, have you heard Ray Reece on Singin' in the Sun Live, on I'm Saved..When Jim wants him to "put in the end of your nose and sing it out"...Does anyone else think that was just plain bad. It almost sounds like there's no voice there. Bear with me. I really dont know anything about voice..I just know what is pleasing to my ears..haha..
It seems on that song and others in SGMusic that there is a point where a bass singers voice loses, for lack of a better word, voice!! Its like its not a voice at all..just a sound.

And now, just a few days later, I hear about them....

See:

"Pine Ridge Boys 45th Reunion" which takes place at 6 p.m. Saturday, June 14, at Liberty Baptist Church, 171 Johnson Dairy Road in Mooresville."

Wow, that's today. I'd love to have gone to see this event, but it starts just one hour from now and I'm at least two hours away...bummer!

That's not Tim Storms, that's another singer.

BTW, his bass voice is better than Tim's IMHO.

Mike Holcomb and Cecil Stringer! Not only are these guys amazing bass singers, but what I really appreciate is their humility. Both are too humble to go "on record" b/c they'd rather give GOD the GLORY than direct attention to themselves!!!

Keep singin' for HIM guys!

Holcomb, in addition to being a singer with a tremendous range, is also a showman who knows how to work a crowd. I'm sure his deepest desire is to give glory to God as you've said, but I disagree with your implication that he shuns recognition. He calls attention to his skills as a deep bass singer every bit as much as guys like JD Sumner and George Younce did. He wouldn't be doing his job if he did otherwise.

I don't think there's anything wrong with that, by the way.

Holcomb may not be trying to break anyone's record. The record is so ridiculous, I can't see the point of trying to break it now. However, the spirit of competition among bass singers is very present at an Inspirations concert. At the most recent Inspirations concert I attended, Martin Cook said Holcomb could hit the Low C most nights. Cook added that he NEVER heard Sumner hit it. Ms. Judy was there on the front row and can verify that this was said.

Martin Cook was joking, I know. My point in bringing this up, though, is to say that singers, by the very nature of their jobs, always direct attention to themselves to a certain degree and Holcomb is no exception.

Speaking of Ms. Judy. WHERE has she been lately? I don't remember seeing a post from her since Miss Dottie's passing!

Their bass singer was Paul David Kenamer, but unfortunately it seems as though the group disbanded about a year ago.

I am sorry to hear that. We ran into someone at a church the other day and they played one of their cds for us and it was very good. Thanks for the info.

To clarify, the fact that neither of these men are on record at the moment backs up the statement I made above.

Going "on record" as the current lowest bass singer would bring far more greater recognition to an individual or group than just being on-stage nightly and hitting a certain low note consistently. Anybody who steps onto stage calls attention to themselves, which was not the point of my comment. I was speaking of "going on record" not "the very nature of their jobs."

I applaud these men who sing for the Lord every night and they use their talent to go as low as they can go for no other recognition than to glorify the Lord and encourage those who are in attendance at their concerts!

And as SGM fans, we are the ones who get to reap the benefits!!!! Do I hear an amen?

Unless one of them can hit 7hz, they are in no position to go on record. That point is moot...and in this case, you could spell it "mute" as well.

JD Sumner did go on record in the 1980s after being referred to as the lowest bass singer in the world for a number of years dating at least back to the Murray State live album, but that doesn't mean he should be held to a lower level of godliness than Mike Holcomb. I believe my point on this matter is valid, because Holcomb is now compared directly to Sumner by Martin Cook who uses the comparison to question the validity of Sumner's record. When Cook says Holcomb can hit the low C some nights and he never heard JD hit the low C, that puts Holcomb "on record" as much as he can possibly be at this point. In essence, Cook is not just saying Holcomb can equal Sumner's record, but that he's really the rightful owner of the record Sumner claimed.

(No one in Southern Gospel really cares that Tim Storms or Dan Britton made a meter move below the threshold of human hearing, as this thread demonstrates. People in SG are interested in bass singers that could make the walls move with some help from a decent quality PA system.)

Again, I know Cook is just kidding around with the audience and poking a little bit of fun at Sumner fans in particular.

Well I have stated it before that I think Cecil Stringer(of Spoken 4) and Mike Holcomb(of the Inspirations) are by far my favorite two bass singers still going strong(Tim Riley is in my top 3 but he isn't singing that much anymore)....and for you dbmurray, I would like to pass on some factual information since you seem to be the thread expert.

Since you are only talking about Mike Holcomb, let me tell you about Cecil Stringer. He is a fine, family oriented, humble, and genuine guy. And I have verified the information that I am about to share with you from my friend Tommy Fairchild(who is their arranger and piano player)....And here it is....Cecil does hit the Double Low C regularly in Concerts with Spoken 4..( I recommend that you go out and hear them in Concert so you can see for yourself, and be sure to take your measuring instruments with you when you do!...lol). And I also know that he has recorded the G below A1.....I have to say that he may not have the record, but he consistenly sings lower than most if not all the other talented bass singers out there....and with the current standards in place for the record, I think he doesn't need to go there....and BTW, J.D. Sumner, Himself, hand picked these two men to succeed him when he retired.

Pine Ridge is still going strong, praise God
They book often in the Canton/Akron, Ohio area. In fact, I think they're comming to Canton at the end of next week.
I'll be seeing them in Mansfield, Oh. August 2nd
I'm very glad they frequent Ohio, but unfortunatley, that doesn't help you guys down south.
