Seems to be a trend with Gold City bass singers, because I saw a recent Gold City concert video and Aaron McCune has one of those strange growths too.

Martin Cook, a high school physics and chemistry teacher and an erstwhile gospel quartet pianist for the Kingsmen Quartet and the Silvertones (another group from that part of North Carolina), loved gospel quartet music and found that some of his students there loved it as well. Cook taught some of his students to sing the harmony parts in the basement of his home. Eventually a group of those students began singing regularly in the Cook basement, 15-year old Archie Watkins on the tenor, 15-year old Ron Hutchins on lead, 19-year old Jack Laws on baritone, and a recent graduate of the school, Dean Robinson, singing bass. The group decided on the name "Inspirations" for itself, because their goal was to be an inspiration to all who heard them.
After a while, the young, determined quartet began to schedule singings on the weekends, and Robinson left the group and was replaced by 14-year old Troy Burns on the bass part. The group quickly developed a distinctive sound, often featuring Watkins on its' songs. By 1966, the group had recorded its' first album, Our Pioneer Heritage (now out-of-print), and was beginning to attract the attention of gospel music fans in the Southeast.

According to the book, Ray Reese went with them a time or two singing and didn't want to be the bass singer saying that they would never make it. Archie Watkins evedently refers to him as "the Inspiration that never was."

I've heard this type of equipment used and I doubt very seriously Gaither uses it. It has a very edgy, electronic sound and Gaither was always a baritone, he's just learned to growl a little. If he was using such electronic equipment he would have a lower range than an average baritone, which he doesn't.

Check out Joe Brown with the Diplomats Quartet. He can get pretty low. Seeing him in concert shocked me. I have known him a couple years, just didnt know he could get this low.

Some days ago I tried to reproduce his F#1, of course using vocal fry:

I was surprised with the success, and I felt I could do it better, so I began to train my fry register, and after a few days 40Hz (E1) came out:

The recording was done on a $2 microphone so has extremely low quality, but the technique could be heared I hope.
bigboytenor, how do you think, should I train it further? It seems that this fry became more "musical" with time. Or I should stop these ridiculous experiments and train my chest register? It is now about D2...A3 in full voice, B1...B3 with a mic.

I see no reason to stop. As long as there is no pain, no sore throat or irritation from it, fry away.
Just be sure to fry me something, cause anything is good when it's fried.
If you are using fry properly, there's nothing unhealthy about it.

Droog, I think Billy Todd (most recently of the Dixie Echoes) could at least sing down to G1 in full voice. I don't believe it's online, but particularly check out "Face to Face" on their Reunion CD a few years back.

I used to sing with a guy who could sing all of the way down to G1 full voice. He couldn't quite figure out vocal fry or any other means of going any lower consistently. He full voiced (is that a verb) a low G on the title track of our one CD. He used to give me the giggles sometimes. We covered "I'm Not Givin' Up" for a while and he would just kill those low a flats on the chorus.

Listen to the first 'clip' on the Tim Riley video #2.... he flat out NAILS a F# in chest voice(he was 20yrs younger than too), but he indeed hits it easily.

Agreed, Droog. While both of those guys can fry really low, they don't have the voice of a London Parris, Tim Riley or Mike Holcomb. Not really impressed. I used to see Dan Britton when he was with the Branson Brothers at Silver Dollar City and even before I began studying voice I never thought he could sing well. As I've stated before, I'd rather hear a guy who has a quality voice that can sing reasonably low than a guy with a mediocre voice that can fry off the bottom of the piano. JMO

And Like BigBoy...I have seen and heard Dan Britton of Pierce Arrow many times, but I have only seen Tim Storm with them once...and I don't want to bash them,....So Let's just say that J.D. Sumner was robbed by the recent standards applied!....So in my book, J.D. still holds the record for SINGING the Lowest Note ever recorded......It is quite possible that goofy store, in the mall, called Spencers, has remote controlled machines that could be used by someone to overtake the record with todays standard.

I know I am about to get jumped on but I was not real fond of listening to J D Sumner either. He growled the low notes. I much prefer some of the other bass singers like Tim Riley and the others JimC mentioned.

I heard of an amature group who just cut their 2nd CD in Nash. and the mixer about stoked to hear the bass hit a low Eb without "frying." I have not heard the final mix yet but will keep you posted.
