Actually that is true. My husband would have gotten a v already if it weren't for me wanting kids.

But I know 2 couples that the husband got a v and it did not work. So what do you do?

Do you know what kind they got?

There are different procedures for v's as well as tubal ligations. There is also a time frame when a couple either has to abstain or use some other method of conception control before the v is considered to be a full success.

No. I try not to ask about those things with men.

One was a guy I worked with, so I would not ask something that personal. It was enough that they told me that much.

I figured that. I think I know a lot of men who'll tell me unnecessary info even if I don't ask. I was going to say that if they got something like a clip device (or something that doesn't sever the vas deferens), I can see how pregnancy would occur, more so than if it got cut and cauterized (or just cut). I just don't trust the clips.

Or if the couple didn't wait the 'required' amount of time before they resumed relations...clips or severing. A man has to go back and have a sperm analysis to make sure he is 'permanently' infertile.

Neither my fh nor I have children, so no doc is going to do a steralization procedure on us.

I'm going to talk to my doc about leah's sheild

A cousin of mine had a vasectomy before he met his wife (he had no children). Once they got married (she wanted children) he got a reversal. They have two children.

Has your fh talked with his g.p. about possibly having a vasectomy, that is of course, if he is willing to get one done? It might take some searching...but, just because a couple doesn't have children doesn't necessarily mean that a doctor wouldn't perform one.

I'm thinking a doctor would still do one; just have to find one that will.

I'd say if there is any chance whatsoever that one of you may want a child in the future, stuff isn't always reversible. But if you're quite sure and there is a doc somewhere that'll do vasectomy (and he's willing), I think it'd be better to get the tube cut.

I think Drs are getting away from that kind of thinking. Maybe back in the "old days" but I imagine you could find a dr that was willing.

I really think nowadays people can find a doctor willing to do almost anything if they look hard enough. That can be good or bad, lol.

I know 2 men who have had V's before getting married, neither of them had children. You can get it done, you just have to find a doctor who is willing. I think they are more willing to do it for men then women.

But if your FDH wants kids then that probably isn't a good option....

Well, I thought I would bring back this thread now that we are officially "not" TTC!! But, I have to admit that we have not been so careful. After trying several kinds, we really don't like condoms and we are not going to do hormonal BC. There are a couple of other barrier methods out that like Leah's cup and diaphram and such, but they really seem like they would also not be all that great either.

I am not consistent enought with my wake up times and routines, so temping is not an option either. Not to mention, I know I won't be consistent enough with charting.

Ugh.........I just KNOW I'm gonna be crazy each month waiting to see if Aunt Flo is going to arrive. I don't like this part of being married!!!!!!

Want my resource for cheap pregnancy tests? Actually, the dollar store is the easiest place to get them...

I guess I could belong in here, since we are actively preventing for probably another year.

Ha....I think I may need to stock up on tests. I'll see how the rest of this month goes first.

How about prayer as a form of birth control????

You let me know how that goes Last time I checked, it's probably less reliable then just checking your cervical fluid.

We don't like condoms, either, but it's something we put up with for now until it's time to TTC. The best kind are SKYN brand. It's a new kind, just released in the last couple of months, and you can buy it at Wal*Mart. They are the least unpleasant of all we've tried.

Condoms aren't great, but they are a lot better than being preggo forever and getting up every two hours each night for a cry-fest and feeding. We've found that condoms are "the choice" when faced with the consequences.

Yup, we are using condoms as well as hormonal bcp(partly from paranoia, and partly due to convictions). We actually like the Kimono brand the best, the only draw back is that they have to be ordered online.

1. Pregnancy isn't forever, though it may seem like it.
2. Not every baby gets up every two hours for a cry-fest and feeding (thank you, Lord!).
3. I'd not rely on condoms alone if you really, really, really don't want to risk #1 or 2. I can't tell you how many we've had break, and we haven't used all that many over the years.

Seriously, Sharon, if you don't want to be pregnant/have a baby...it's probably going to be inconvenient, no matter how you choose to do that. You just have to decide if the inconvenience is worth it.

And remember that the fertile time is only for about 7-10 days. I call it condom week. I purposely drag out till the other weeks. :) And there are other things to do. :)

You know, we've been using them for well over a year, and we've never had one break so far. And we use one EVERY time. It helps if you use extra lube (in addition to what's already on it).

At this point, it wouldn't be a tragedy if one did break, but last year I would have been pretty worried about it. So far, no problems.

We've been using them off and on for 2.5 years and haven't had one break.

So, Zippy... is that all you guys use? I have been meaning to ask you since you've obviously avoided successfully.

Hmmm...I don't know what our problem has been. I'm sure we were using them right. Maybe they weren't the right size. Either way, I've heard of them breaking for other people too. So, yeah...nothing is foolproof.

Well, it is not so much that I don't like the condoms...I can't tell too much of a difference and they are not that inconvinent to put on. But, my husband is not fond of them at all. He said they really take away from his sensations and such....if ya know what I mean.

Anywho.....The Army is really our BC right now. When he comes back, I think we are gonna have to do more experimenting with the condoms so that I'm not spending a fortune on pregnancy tests while worrying myself so much about it.

We never had a break, but dH was very methodical about putting them on and removing them properly. It helps to be married to an engineer.

He could not tolerate spermicide, which is one way to help make sure you don't get pregnant. But we did find a particular type of condom he like much better then others as far as the sensation aspect goes. Many folks find that it helps to combine NFP with condoms, though we never did.
