I've seen Doyle Dykes a couple times and had the opportunity to speak with him both times. He is by far the best guitarist I've ever had the pleasure to know.

Favourite tones?

Keeps changing!

Currently John Norum, John Sykes, Paul Gilbert, with Guthrie govan a near contender too.

In the terms of guitarists in my favorite bands, the amazing Joseph Milligan from Anberlin is a frontrunner. His ability to play broken chords astounds me.

Faster than what?

Is your guitar already set-up for such a low tuning? Do you have a heavier gauge string on it? Is the intonation set? Does the nut need to be filed for thicker strings?

If you already have the guitar tuned to D, as opposed to E, then you can get the HipShot D-tuner tuning machine that allows you to flip a lever and drop that string down by one whole step.

They look like this:

The A major what? chord?

Practice putting your fingers in the right spot.

Have you ever used one of those? I have once or twice and was pretty unimpressed. The pitch change was close to where it was supposed to be, but still out of tune, and the mechanism was more clumsy than I'd hoped, especially when you want to go back up in pitch.

Get another guitar or a dual neck job. Keep one tuned regular and drop tune the other one.

Either that or take lessons on re-tuning mid stride from a good banjo player. They do it all the time. You will need to have a relatively coarse tuner on that string.

You can only re-tune fast with a fixed bridge. Any tremolo and all the other strings will go out of tune too - obviously worse if it's a floating trem.

There are several machine heads that will rotate in some way to give a fixed change in intonation (Stu Hamm uses one on his bass, I think), but it's quite a job to get it right.

Best solution is several guitars with individual set-ups. That's what the pro's do.

Except Adrian Legg - he re-tunes his guitar as part of the song...

Practice until you know how to tell it by ear. I can usually get dropped D the first or second time no problem.

drnick is right about floating trems - change anything and everything is changed. I dislike trems and do not use them, so I only have fixed-bridge guitars. Having more than one guitar is really the only way to do it if you move between alternate tunings and standard tunings (other than something like drop D) a lot.

If you are playing the heavy stuff where you are doin gnothing more that chording, a cheaper guitar with decent p-ups will suffice. Just be sure you have everything set up right for that tuning and the guage strings you put on it. The intonation will, most likely, have to be set.

I never really used other tunings with electric guitars, other than drop D. I used to have a dedicated slide guitar that I had tuned in open D with the action set a little higher. They sound really interesting on an acoustic, though.

Now you can have your cake and eat it too!!! The Tremel-No may be a possible soloution as it allows you to temporary lock your tremolo in place and gives you the stability of a fixed bridge.

All of us who have been at this a while will have more stuff than we actually use. Here's a question: what do you gig with, and does it change if you play different places, etc?

My stuff pretty much stays the same:

Fender 60s Custom Strat
Randall RH120DX half stack
Dunlop Cry Baby Wah
DigiTech Blues Screamer
Boss MT-2 Distortion
DigiTech Multi Chorus
Ibnez digital delay/echo
Reverb: I use the amps foot-switchable reverb
Dunlop "Big Stubby" 3mm picks
Ernie Ball 10 guage strings

I have an Ibanez 2x10 Tone Blaster that I split from the chorus depending on venue size.

My rig consists of:

Fender '93 American Standard Strat or '97 Lone Star Strat
Dunlop Crybaby wah
Boss OS-2 (Overdrive/Distortion)
Boss CH-1 (Super Chorus)
Boss DD-3 (Digital Delay)
Fender Performer 1000 amp

The OS-2 will soon be replaced by Visual Sounds Jekyl & Hyde. And here's another cool toy to have. Check out this little pocket rockit from the folks a Line 6.

Is the Danelectro any good? I have never tried any Danelectro stuff, but I know some that really like them, even the super-cheap stuff. I've thought about trying the phaser, it's the only thing I don't have that I want.

I used to have a Boss PH-1r. It was the first pedal I ever owned and I bought off of a keyboard player for $15.00 a great many years ago. I recently sold it, though, as it had been collecting dust for quite some time.

URGENT QUESTION!!!

My uncle found a Martin Stinger at a garage sale that has a solid neck, but it needs some body work. It needs a new pickguard and two nobs. It comes with three cables, a stand, and a case, all for $50. I'm really tempted to get it. Is it worth it, or will repairs jack the price? I need to know by tomorrow.

Probably not. I checked ebay and they don't go for very much (a guitar was $76, and basses were $120 and $217). My thinking is why would it need a new pickguard unless it was abused and/or neglected? If that's the case, then there could be plenty of other, more important things wrong with it.

Yeah, that's kinda what I thought. The only thing that made me doubt was that the lady running the sale knew absolutely nothing about guitars. I wondered if maybe she was selling a gem for less than it was worth. Thanx for the tip!

It's actually fairly decent compared to other envelope filters twice the price or more.
Quality wise, it's not as sturdy as an old MXR but it'll withstand some moderate stomping.
The higher priced Dano stuff is cased in metal and not plastic like the cheap stuff so I'd imagine that it'd be more durable.

OK, I use a Boss GT-3 for all my FX, and also as a pre-amp.
I run it direct into an old Marshall 8008 poweramp, and out through a Marshall 1936 2x12 cab that some idiot painted red - but I got it cheap so what the heck...and one day I'll get round to stripping it back to black.

Two main guitars:
G&L Invader
Ibanez Prestige RGT 320Q

although I sometimes break out my old G&L SC-3 (modded).

Hi all
I picked up my acoustic guitar recently after a long period of lack of motivation. I'd offered a few weeks ago to lead worship at my single's sunday school class. So I googled a few favorite worship songs with the chords, picked one, practiced a few days, & led worship with that song. I know worship went well because the others were singing (even if I was messing up some chord fingering.)

I got some library books on guitar instruction, thinking I could practice those chords to get my fingering back. Any other advice on practicing, keeping motivated, etc.? Thanks.
