I would like to learn more theory anyone have any suggestions for a good book that will teach me that?
Hey Rocker, you said you felt like a newbie when you were discussing scales and such....lol don't feel bad cause I probably understood only about one-fourth of what was said.......I was never really taught that stuff......I need to take lessons again though.....

I started with a book called "The Guitar Handbook" by Ralph Denyer back when I was 15 years old. It's an all-encompassing book about the guitar, covering it's history, theory, maintenance, etc...and I still use the book today, 25 years later, to teach my students.

There are many other books/videos/methods, some working better than others depending on the way that the individual learns but I keep returning to the "Handbook".

Yes, teachers can help someone to learn but the bottom line is that nothing is a substitute for quality time spent with your instrument in private and, eventually, with others. Repetative practice and continuing to learn new things is paramount to becoming comfortable on the guitar or any instrument for that matter.

Hey Rocker, you said you felt like a newbie when you were discussing scales and such....lol don't feel bad cause I probably understood only about one-fourth of what was said.......I was never really taught that stuff......I need to take lessons again though.....

I've already recommended "The Guitar Fretboard Workbook" by Barret Tagliarino. In only seven lessons, I've almost entirely memorized the fretboard, not just visually, but theoretically as well. I've never had a lesson in my life, and using that book, I've already out-played a buddy of mine who's been playing for two years. I got it at Guitar Center, but you can order it online from Musician's Institute Press.

Cool! Sounds like an awesome guitar. Probably a custom made one. I have never seen a guitar like that.

Thanks gtrdave! I well look into it! I agree though that you learn a lot just by messing around with your guitar in private.......my first teacher wasn't that great at teaching so I had to learn stuff on my own, but that's when I discovered my obsession and love for guitar......lol...

I just traded some stuff for a Randall RX120D (with the 4x12 cab). This things sounds great. Turning the gain to about three gives it a great slightly dirty sound. I muddy it up a little more with a DigiTech Blues Screamer and it sounds nice for blues (through a Strat). The clean channel is nice, real nice - I couldn't believe it sounded as good as it did. It sounds better than a solid state amp should.

What amps do you use, love, or want to have? I regret selling a Bassman Ten. I bought it when no one played tube amps for about $100. Wish I had that amp back.

Would you believe it if I told you that I do not play Guitar. Well not very good I am still learning. But I think I am now getting to the point where I can play my first song. And I want that first song to be "savior". I do not even own my own guitar. I just play on my dads Fender and Guild. But I have been looking so much that now I am starting to recognize the brand and model of a guitar.

What amps do you use, love, or want to have? I regret selling a Bassman Ten. I bought it when no one played tube amps for about $100. Wish I had that amp back.

I have a Peavey Delta Blues 210, Peavey Classic 20, Line 6 Spider II 112, Epiphone Valve Standard, Laney BC-50 bass amp and Peavey Classic 115E cabinet.
I've also got a Digitech Genesis 1 modeler (it's like a POD), a Crate CA-1P rack-mount acoustic amp and the Amplitube plug-in for ProTools.
Oh, and a Peavey Rage 158 that's for sale on eBay.

I looked at some Line 6 amps and were impressed with them. Peavey is also making good stuff. It used to be that it was hard to find good amps that you could actually afford, now there are a lot of good ones out there.

I used to use the Bassman when I played a gig. I would rum my lows and mids through it and my highs through a Fender combo (also tube). The sound was thick warm for blues/blues based rock. I could do anything from blues to Metallica and that setup took it and delivered. I kick myself for getting rid of it.

I haven't heard a Line 6 product I've liked yet. Maybe if you're doing some trippy spaced out tone or you need something at a low volume, it'll work, but for loud straight ahead rock...

Mesa Boogies can sound great, but they can also sound like junk. I've got a Triaxis pre running through a 20/20 power amp and it's terrific for clean sounds, but for heavy stuff, you really need to spend some time tweaking it.

Just because it says "marshall" on the front doesn't mean it's any good. Just like anybody else, they have good models and poor models, expensive ones and cheap ones, etc. If you want a "real marshall sound" you'll need to look for an all-tube model. If you live near a city, you can probably find one in the classifieds, the swap sheet, or craigslist.

The Spider II (and related Flextone III/PODxt and Vetta II) were the first Line 6 amps to get my attention. I all but ignored them prior to that then-new series as the old ones sounded very synthetic, very cold, and the distortion was very buzzy.
I've used the Spider II in church for almost 3 years and have had decent success with it overall but it was still missing something...that something being tubes.
I've just recently removed the Spider II from church use, stuck it at home in the studio, and replaced it with a cheap Epi Valve Standard. While the Epi is no boutique amp, it is all-tube Class A design and gives me a nice "warm" sound at relatively low stage levels.

Line 6 amps have their place and their uses but they still don't do what a genuine tube amp does.

I found an amp that looks okay. I want a deep, warm rock tone from an amp that I can use at home and possibly at church. Anyone think this one will do the trick?
