iron man I have never gotten the popularity of that song. It was ok but not any better than other cuts on the same album. Personally I liked the title track "Paranoid" and "Electric Funeral" better.

ORIGINAL: gtrdave drnick, have you played through one of these amps yet? I'll have to look for a store that carries them because judging a piece of gear via clips on the web is like test driving a car on the internet. Yup, and mine arrived this morning. Basically a nice fat clean sound, which boosts to a sort of AC/DC level overdrive, a nice rock overdrive that boosts to Dream Theater territory. Reminds me of a Mesa Single Rectifier, but a thicker sound, without the top end harshness Mesas sometimes have. I'm playing it through a Marshall 1936 2x12 cab, with standard Celestions. I think ELmwood tend to use Vintage 30s so I might change them one day, but it sounds mighty fine now. Need to pick up a delay and a chorus - the GT-3 I've got doesn't help the intrinsic tone. Might look at MXR, or even Line 6 for the delay.

I like the Boss DD-3 (delay) and CH-1 (chorus) but the EH Memory Man is a wicked chorus pedal though. The CH-1 is good for modern, subtle chorusing, but the Memory Man is sick.

Over the years I've found that the Voodoo Labs analog chorus is my favorite. I know they're a bit expensive, but they're extremely rich and versatile.

Price not a major problem, but absence of a level control would be an issue. Might get the big yellow MXR Chorus, and possibly the TC Electronic Nova Delay. Both have true bypass, and I looove my new tone.

Since I have returned, I must give this thread a bump. I can not let it fall into obscurity. During my absence I have purchased a Crate V33H 30 watt tube head. Beautiful clean channel, muddy gain channel. On the whole a good amp, with which I am very satisfied.

Thanks. So far I am very pleased with it. My only gripe is the poor gain channel. It sounds like someone threw a wet balnket over the amp. I have a Diaz Texas Ranger that, when using the mid boost, fixes the muddiness. The clean channel on it is superb. Mostly I have been running evrything through the clean channel and using overdrive pedals. I got the head, new, for $300. I can live with a muddy gain channel.

I need to invest into some new strings for my Les Paul. I really had no idea what to target last time I bought strings, so hopefully this time I'll receive some recommendations. I've been told that D'Addario carries some decent strings. Any other brands or recommendations I should look into?

All the hunting for a new amp taught me one thing: Very few amps do everything well. And the simple ones tend to sound better. You wouldn't by a Fender for the overdrive, for example, it's the clean sound where it really rules. Vox do sweet overdrive, but forget really heavy stuff. Marshall at the moment do everything....OK. But to get everything done well, you've gotta pay. Best small amp I'd say at the moment is the Orange Tiny Terror, but it's not especially versatile. Lets face it, most pro's have completely separate rigs for clean/mild drive/heavy drive/lead. And probably mod everything they get. I'm still in love with my Elmwood, but it ain't cheap. And can I put in a plug for the Xotic BB Preamp overdrive? VERY good way of giving a crunch sound an extra push into '80's level gain. Sweeeet!!!

Any other brands or recommendations I should look into? I use D'Addario XLs on my electrics. I've also used Dean Markley strings in the past. Been happy with both. I do NOT use Gibson or Fender strings because I've not been impressed with them in the past, especially the Fender Bullets.

Fender bullets will wear your frets down. Not a good choice. I have used Gibsons on my Paul, but prefer the D'Addario XLs as well.
