If you make sure that your intake of these this is sufficient, you will never have to worry about the "bonk". Note: Most kids need lots and lots of reminders or they will not drink enough.

My guys are just the opposite. Drinking out of a water bottle is such a cool thing to do. Good thing we ride mostly in the summer when there are cornfields! I went for a trainng ride this morning. At 6:30 it was already 75*. It was pretty muggy. At one point it did start to rain. Then the sun came out... 63miles in a bit under 4hrs. One of my slowest rides in a very long time. But, considering the conditions, I'll take it!

My son took silver at the Junior National Championship road race yesterday, missing Gold by only .3 seconds; the average speed for his race was 28 MPH! He bridged up to a break with about 10 miles to go; the break only had 8 seconds with about 2 miles remaining before the finish, but they stayed away and it was a five way sprint for the finish.

Speaking of Olympics, Taylor Phinney who is on the Olympic track team attended the National Olympic training camps with my son; they were dorm mates in Colorado Springs; He is just a couple of years older than my son. Taylor currently holds the Junior world record for the 3K pursuit. We are looking forward to watching him race next week, and we are looking forward to watching the Road Time trial on Wed. Two of the US favorites are locals in our area i.e. Levi Leipheimer, and Christine Thorburn. Levi shows up for an occasional training ride or race in our area a few times a year, and Christine is a regular out here, riding and racing in many of the local training rides and races.

Here's a biking adventure for you: bee stings. Do you know what I'm talking about? They fly into you fairly often and occasionally they feel trapped in some place. A few weeks ago, it was between my ear and my helmet. My ear itched for almost a week after that sting. Today, I had one sting me just under the front edge of my helmet and it could have been worse if I hadn't slid my helmet back and got him out. About 5 minutes later, I thought a twig had fallen from a tree and hit my helmet, but then I felt a little tickle around one of the vents. After what had just happened, I decided to quickly remove the helmet. It turned out to be quite a large hornet this time. I avoided his sting and he did not avoid my stomping foot, so I think I won that confrontation. I'd say the most memorable such occasion was a few years ago when a bumble bee flew right between my lips, got stuck on my teeth, and started stinging away.

My son was doing a time trial practice a couple of years ago, and while riding full out with his mouth wide open to get enough air, a bee flew straight to the back of his throat and stung him. The only one worse that I can think of was when my best friend ran out of Gas on the Grapevine (I-5). He unloaded his bike and was riding one handed down the hill to the gas station with a gas can in the other hand when a bee found the opening in his rather baggy shorts. With no hands available to deal with the bee, you can guess where he got stung.

Your comment a while back about sprinting in biking sandals sounded like it might be from a real life example. I've not had a problem with them, but I never seem to have any reason to sprint. Bees certainly make another good argument against loose clothing. Helmets seem to be a hazard, especially with all those vents, but they may be worth keeping for other reasons.

I have had more than one bee in my helmet! They always seem to get trapped while you are traveling fast downhill on a windy road i.e. when you wouldn't want to take your helmet off or your hands of the bars. However, so far I have never been stung on the top of my head. By the way, here is a great picture of my son from the National Championships last week. He is in the red and white specialized kit (out in front). He is in his nice aerodynamic position, doing about 22 MPH here (keep in mind that this is on the uphill portion of the coarse!)

Can someone give me some tips on buying a road bike. I'm a relatively new rider. I have a mountain bike which I use often, but for riding on the streets, or to go to work, I think I want to get a road bike and I have no clue as what to get.

I have a mountain bike which I use often, but for riding on the streets, or to go to work, I think I want to get a road bike and I have no clue as what to get. The two most important factors are fit and budget. Fit is always important, but because of the leaned over position on a road bike it is even more important. The biggest mistake that people make when choosing the size of a road bike is doing so based on how tall they are i.e. by standing over the top tube of the bike. The size of a bike should always be chosen by how long the bike is in relation to your torso. Bikes of the same height come in different lengths, and people with the same length legs, come with different lengths of torsos. The reason this is important is that the height of a bike is very easily adjusted (on most bikes), by changing the height of the of the seat, but the length is very difficult to change and often requires changing parts (like the stem) and maybe even the seatpost. And even when parts are changed there is a relatively small amount of adjustment that can be made compared to the amount of adjustment that can be made to the height of the seat. If you go to a bike store and they try and size you by having you stand over the top tube of the bike (unfortunately quite common), you will know that the person selling you the bike does not know what he/she is doing. BTW - When I saw you had posted in this thread, I THOUGHT YOU WERE FINALLY GOING TO TELL US HOW YOUR TRIP WAS!

BTW - When I saw you had posted in this thread, I THOUGHT YOU WERE FINALLY GOING TO TELL US HOW YOUR TRIP WAS! Thanks Benelchi. I wouldn' t have a clue about what to look for. How about price range? I don't own an expensive Mtn Bike...it's the Trek 4300, so, very much a starter bike. Is there a starter road bike? Maybe I'll do a bit of duathlon next year as I'm a runner, and since I'm getting better at cycling, I'd like to try to enter a few of the local races here. My trip? It was amazing. It was a real adventure. We had a lot of mishaps, but we also had tonnes of fun. I can't write right now because I"m at work, but here's the link of the of my trip summary as posted in the singles forums. I even included some pictures. CYcling was great, Whistler is a mountain biking heaven. Though I didn't do any the downhill mountain bike park as it was raining and it was also very very expensive. Starting from post 67 http://forums.crosswalk.com/m_3609072/mpage_3/tm.htm

(the last gal and I had convoyed for 50 miles or more -- and she'd just purchased her bike the week before!) Over 50, overweight, overjoyed. It's doable for older guys with aspirations!
