cool pic Erin!!!

so what is your fabric for your new one?

My new one is just plain ole blue..well kinda turquoisy...I need to take a pic. I top stitched it in brown to match my diaper bag.

I'm making my cousin's girlfriend one for their baby girl...she thought it looked cool and handy. I'm excited for a baby wearing convert! Hers is hot pink and then a brown with pink and green polka dots(I'm making it reversible).

About 6 months...when they are sitting up unassisted. By then, they have enough trunk control to hold them selves up.

Did you do a jersey or a woven cotton?

sounds pretty Erin!!! can't wait to see pics!!

I am making me a pattern for a new one (called a Chunei...here is a video of it). There is no way I am paying that much for one when I can figure out a pattern on my own and save a bunch of money. I think I will like it better then a meitai, and Justice is getting beyond the moby and into the meitai age...so I am trying this new one.

It was a jersey knit. I doubled it for strength. Hobby Lobby had a nice selection of knits.

That is cool, Sarah! I still want a Mei Tei...i started making one but never finished it..I should get back to that. RIght now the Moby is working good for us, though sometimes he/we get to hot in it. We had to abandon it in the middle of Walmart the other day and go to riding in the cart. He was tired and fussy already though so that probably played a part.

Yup, this is it. Ok, total novice at babywearing here - I am not going to count the 30 minutes or so I wore him in the baby bjorn front carrier before we both decided we hated it. So new baby is coming in Feb. and I would like to be able to wear her for at least a few weeks to months. I looked at Becco but it seems pricey. Haven't ruled it out though. I am thinking slings are better for newborns? I am "fluffy" as we all like to say and I know some of the styles out there don't work so well in that case. Any thoughts or suggestions? Anybody used this one or something similar?

Kris, I'm a Beco lover But I also have a beco style carrier that I adore, but I made that one. I needed a larger one for carrying a toddler(yes, I still wear my 30lb 2 year old) and the Beco was feeling a bit small. A ring sling or pouch can be good with a newborn, but really, I wore my 6 week old nephew in my Beco and it was fine. I just swaddled him and popped him in there. I plan on doing the same thing with the peanut in my belly :) I do want a ring sling, but I'm not convinced that they are as comfortable.

I can't stand slings. My personal fav's are wraps (like the Moby wrap, but I made my own for much cheaper), and meitai's.

Kris I am not a babywearing person so I may not know as much as some others who can offer great advice, but I know that I DO NOT like to wear wraps. I bought an ergo which also has a newborn insert and it was awesome!! I used it at times when I had to do housework and my son wouldn't settle and all the time at the shops, when we travelled interstate etc. Its similar in look to the Beco, I don't know the prices over there though.

I loved the ERGO for a while but then for some reason, her weight shifted? and it got uncomfy.

I LOVE soft structured carriers, like Ryanne makes, and recently got a BabyHawk Meitei and need to use it. Walking on her own is way too cool now and mom just doesn't match up!

Kris, I made my own basic (very basic) pouch sling, and loved it for newborns. One of the problems I found is that they are often much too loose. I hate them when they are hanging down by my bellybutton, and it does wear on the back and shoulders. In order to be comfortable, I needed the sling to be quite snug, and of course spread out over my shoulder and not bunched on my collar bone. I found when I had the sling snug enough, I could also safely and comfortably carry my baby on my back, which was great.!

For comfort and weight distribution, I really like the long wrap style. I don't really like the length of the fabric and the process of wrapping though.

I just bought a Moby. I'm really hoping I like it! I wanted to get it since the baby can breastfeed while in it.

Sharon...the only thing I don't like about the official Moby wraps (vs homemade ones) is that it is very thick. It's fine in the winter, but I can't stand it when it is warm outside, and when it is hot, there is no way I could wear it.

I went to the store and bought different materials to make a few more. One is jersey knit (camo) that I did two layers of (because the back of the material is not pretty). Just simply folded the material and sewed it together. The other one I made is a simple knit material (summer colors- yellows and greens, kind of tie dyed sort of look)...very lightweight. (When I fold it up vs my Moby wrap, it takes up about 1/8 of the space). It's my favorite, but the only problem is it does not stretch at all, so it takes a while to get the hang of how tight to tie it. Right now though, my favorite is the Chunei style that I made a few months ago. Justice really settles down in it much easier then in the wraps these days.

I was convinced before I tried it, that I wouldnt like a Moby, but I love it! Sarah made me one and sent it to me and once I tried it it was great.

We got a cheapie sling and it was so umcomfy, and it put baby at a bad height (counter top level) so i was too afraid to do anything in it for fear he'd get hurt. Plus Isaac was so small I didnt like the angle it put his neck either.

The Moby worked great when he was little bitty and when he was bigger too. I made myself another one (because I felt like Rambo in the store with the cammo one criscrossed across my back! haha) Then I made one for my cousin too. Hobby Lobby had a lot of Jersey knits to choose from. I double layered all mine because I felt like it made them stronger. The one I made for my cousin was reverisble.

I am wanting to make a Mei Tei type one but havent gotten around to it yet.

I'd also like to get a K'tan at some point for next baby. I saw one at a consignment sale and it was a good price and just like I wanted but sadly I didnt have the funds at that time so maybe some other time. I am still sad I didnt get it...

I bought a Moby from the local version of Craigslist. It was only $10, but it is pumpkin orange.

Erin, the "bag" slings like you buy from Walmart or Target are NOT recommended at.all. by most die hard babywearers because they are very unsafe and can lead to suffocation. I wouldn't even pass that one on...

You are probably hitting the time for a more structured carrier. Did you make a Mei Tei yet?

I quickly realized that, about the WalMart carrier, I didnt even feel safe with him in it for a few moments. Bleh! It looked nice, but no way!

Yeah, we have quit wearing for the most part, I still put him outward facing in the Moby from time to time, but he's getting heavy!

Making a Mei Tei is on my sewing list...once I get caught up...I still have about 5 tote bags left to make for paying customers then I can make my stuff.

So you can use both the Moby and becco for newborns? How about the chunei one, Sarah. My computer doesn't like their site but it looked like they had a little bitty in one of the pics. Maybe I'll have to try another browser later tonight. I definitely want to wear this little one, probably for a few months. Certainly through cold and flu season! I don't want to keep Josh in because of the baby because we will all go stir crazy, but I don't want a bunch of toddlers sharing every germ that comes our way in March. Generally I am not too worried about germs, but a newborn in Feb has me a bit more concerned. I am thinking I need one that can be used from newborn to young toddler and isn't too heavy to use in a humid summer. I don't think I want to buy more than one so I am thinking of skipping the sling type, especially if the cheapy ones aren't safe. Any other thoughts?

yup.

I made one for me and did a whole blog about it...HERE if you want to see pics of it (and my hubby modeling it). It wasn't too hard at all, and although I used the meitai with Jack all the time, I LOVE this one much better for Justice. It is also much more secure, so I think it would work better for newborns. I didn't find this one until just a few months ago though, so Justice was not little anymore.

Kris...do you know someone who has several wraps that you can borrow one just to see if you like it? (If not, pm me your address and I will send you one of mine so you can try it...the Moby...I never use it these days anyway)

Here is Isaac in the Moby. It worked great for us, this was right after we got home so he was around 6lbs.
AND HERE is 9 month old Isaac in the same Moby wrap. These are made by our sweet Sarah!
