Michelle, I'm not sure if I agree with your advice. It was a bit painful the first few times I had sex too. Not unbearable or anything but not the most pleasant feeling (but all the other stuff that comes with it is great!) It has to stretch out a bit I guess. If you tell someone to stop as soon as they feel a bit of pain then you could unnecessarily scare them.

It's all different for all people. For me, I related it to a very tight muscle that was stretching. Like the day after you lift and you stretch it out in the morning. Kinda sore, uncomfortable, but not painful. Now I had a friend, who it was painful. Then she discovered not enough lube, too much sex and, incidentally the condoms were prohibiting 'nice' sex. Once they stopped using them, she was ok. They can use them now, I think it was just that the condom provided too much interference. If you believe there will be pain, there will be pain.

My advice? Take it slow and TALK TO EACH OTHER!!

I agree here. There was a fair amount of pain and bleeding involved the first few times for me. The answer (at least for us) was to proceed slowly and take our time about it. It did get better.

Not so obvious to me. I've been married for 7.5 years and sex has hurt every single time. I cried on my wedding night It hasn't always been horrific pain, but there is always some degree of discomfort. I even asked my doctor about it and she said that's fairly common. That's not to scare above_all and say that sex can't be enjoyable too, but it is not unusual for it to hurt, at least a little, during part of the act. In my experience, anyhow.

I threw up the morning after my wedding. I think it was a combination of lack of food and lack of sleep.
Anyways, I would think that if it hurt after the first few times it would be cause for consulting a doctor. There are times when it is uncomfortable or mildly painful for various reasons, but to routinely feel pain would be something else and I would want to make sure there was nothing causing it that could be fixed (infection, vvd(?), uti, etc).

above_all,

I wish you the best of luck with GREAT sex when you get married. It took S I X long and painful years for us to have that quickie, so I want to share some REALLY IMPORTANT information that I didn't have.

NEVER EVER DTD IF THERE"S EVEN AN INKLING OF PAIN.

(that seems so obvious, i know....but...anyway....)

And, I'm so impressed that your guy is 42 and you'll be his first! Wow!

My issue is not so much about pain or anything like that. Just that with all of the options of how to prevent pregnancy it can a bit overwhelming. And I don't want to worry about any of these things. I want to fully enjoy myself.

What if I make a mistake with the charting? And if I took BCP, will I be able to handle the possible side effects? Hard to explain. Maybe I'll be able to clarify more later after thinking about it some more.

I still stand by what I said. Sex shouldn't hurt, and even virginal sex can occur without pain. No woman (or man) should ever feel pressure to engage in painful sex. Additionally, there are MANY ways to be intimate without intercourse that can be pleasurable for both parties. Discomfort and pain are not synonymous.

If you practice enough before the wedding, I'm sure you'd be fine with the charting! it's really not difficult once you get the hang of it, and once you start you know your body and your cycle, it gets even easier! NFP/FAM is NOT HARD, you just have to be committed to the method!

We agreed on NFP before we married and went into marriage realizing that something could happen and I could get pregnant and we would accept it as a blessing. No matter what form of birth control you use, there's still a chance you can get pregnant.

FYI, we prevented successfully and then achieved pregnancy the first month we tried.

And when used correctly, NFP is very effective!

sex hurt me the first time. I was in TEARS!!!!

It was a LONG time until it didn't hurt. The key .... RELAX!! And proper preparation. I hate to admit it, but it was my affair that made sex not hurt for me. He was more open to my concerns about how I was feeling than I thought my husband was. I was afraid to tell my husband what I wanted. So my advice to newbies .... TALK TO HIM ABOUT IT!!

Indeed...if something doesn't feel good when it's happening, say so. Don't just 'grin (or grimmace for that matter) and bear it. Sex is to be pleasing to both parties. There's nothing to be ashamed about if something doesn't feel good, but something else does! You're not going to disappoint him if you tell him, "Hey, try it this way, that feels better (good, whatever)." I guarantee you, that instead of making him feel bad it will make him more happy to please. Just like in every area of a marriage communication is key, and sex is no different...

How important is temping? I just don't get up at the same time every day. I don't see that in the foreseeable future, either. My understanding is that the Billings Method is FAM without temps, and is slighly less reliable, but still alright.

Yes, it is technically slightly less reliable; however, it isn't that much less. With both methods, if you are having fertile quality cf, you should assume that you are fertile regardless of temps. The temps only give another confirmation of ovulation after it has occurred.

BTW, I am so happy for you...

I also agree with the advice to talk to your spouse about any problems.

I participated in the off topic comments myself so I'm talking to myself as well as everyone else but we do need to move on from the painful sex topic as this is not the thread for it. Thanks!

Hmmm....

CD10 = EW. Perfect, stretchy EW.

CD11 - CD16 = Very wet CF.

Cervix height and opening is all over the place. Well, it's probably not, but it seems all over the place. It seems opener than last week or so, in that I can really feel a dent. But, it also feels lower, not higher, than the day I had EW. I think it's softer. It doesn't feel like my nose, and it definitly did last week, but I wouldn't say its as soft as my cheek.

I wish I had temp'ed this month. I think that would help me see a pattern or something. I've devided to start temping next month for the added accuracy and because I'm SO curious.

Do you guys have any thoughts on what's going on? My cycle is usually 32/33 days, and so there are still, like 18 days or something. According to TCOYF, the time between ovulation and the beginnng of the next cycle shouldn't be longer than 16 days. But...I've had fertile fluid for a week, with the EW twenty-some days before the endof the cycle.

Thanks,
Michelle

I'm guessing that your wet CF is your most fertile CF, not the EW CF. The wetter, the more fertile.

Have you ever noticed that, when you break open an egg, there are two kinds of egg white? The outer stuff is wetter; the inner stuff is not quite as wet but is really stretchy. When you go to fry it in a hot pan, the more liquid part becomes crusty because it's thinner and cooks faster; the thicker stuff stays more together, in an oval. Just one of my weird observations. But I'm thinking you've got both kinds of EW CF.

Really? I thought EW was the most fertile. But, seriously, the last couple days, it was so wet it practically dripped.

Cool, thanks :)

Just to confuse matters sometimes I ovulate (or rather, have all the signs of ovulation) but don't have a period (presumably I'm "firing blanks" and not actually releasing an egg at those times). Which is why it took me a fair while to get pregnant with both of our two.

Hi Manda!

To everyone...one of the descriptors for vaginal sensation is "cold."

How is something attached to my 98.6 degree body supposed to be cold?

And, that question is two-folded. One, to share with everyone that I think the descriptor of "cold" doesn't make any sense . And also to find out what it DOES mean.

Thanks!

I have no idea what that means. I have never heard of that as a descriptor. Where did you see that?

I've never heard of that either. Was that in a book???

In addition to it not making sense, body temp is supposed to increase with ovulation, so how is being cold evidence of ovulation? Unless it's describing post-ovulation.....

It's in my ovusoft software. The drop down menu for vaginal sensation includes serveral many-word choices, one of them being, "wet, moist, gooey, cold."

When I'm ovulating and having copious amounts of EWCF it sometimes comes out when I'm going to the bathroom...it feels cold. That could be what it meant.

Sometimes, wet feels cold on your skin... especially if there is a breeze.

Michelle, sometimes stress can make my cycle seem like I'm about to o, but then it backs down a bit and I o later (with the typical signs). -- another option is mistaking other fluids for cf. I've only recently been able to really feel my cervical opening change (after many years).

Some people also get fertile-looking fluid near the end of their period and then dry up before the *real* patch of fertile fluid. The thing about checking fluid is that it's a PATTERN, so looking at each day in relation to just itself isn't always helpful. You might also just have a copious amount of fertile fluid that last a long time. Some people only have a day or two, some have weeks of fertile fluid. Since you know your regular cycle is 32/33 days, keep checking everything for this month and just see what happens! If it's wet or EW, it's potentially fertile, so just keep at it every day or every other day until you dry up. LOL

Again, ovulation likely hasn't occurred, since you haven't experienced the drying up yet. Even if you're not temping, you should 'dry up' for 2 - 3 days after ovulation. Don't be worried that things are wrong in your cycle yet, Michelle!!
