DebbieLynne, I came to the thread late, so I was just wondering, if I could ask, what you and John are capable of doing on your own, and what things you need the attendants to do.

As you can tell by my signature, I'm Deb's hubby.

Just to add a bit to Deb's answer, we both have a power chairs and computers which enable us to do quite a lot.

The power chairs mean we can get around the apartment on our own, or venture outsite for fresh air (wandering around the neighborhood) or head for the bus and then trains to venture to Boston or sometimes Quincy. As Deb can tell you, I don't like to sit still, so when we venture out I'm not inclined to sit in one place for very long. Whenever possible I operate both wheelchairs at the same time as we stroll along side by side.

I can use my laptop computer whether I'm up in my chair or lying down in bed (which I have to do most afternoons). I use my computer mostly to earn a little extra money, and to catch up on this forum and email from the prayer chain at our church.

We get to church via a paratransit van service because to get there by bus takes about 2 hours (includes a transfer) and even at that we end up missing Sunday School. With paratransit we're there in about 15 minutes.

Pretty good day, Terri. For a while, I thought my computer ruined some of my digial art by merging layers so I couldn't edit it, but I was viewing it in the wrong format...praise God!

How's your day going?

Okay, supper time. I wanted to leave something here to inspire conversation, but as usual I can't think of anything. I'd hoped to chat with Sue. Maybe tomorrow. We're watching "The Notebook" tonight, so I'll let you know how we like it.

Sorry I missed you, Deb. Joe didn't get done with school till 5:30 and I had supper to prepare and an online purchase to return. I had purchased a heart rate monitor so I could get more out of my workouts and it broke after less than two weeks' use. I really like it and hope the return process works well. They are supposed to send me a replacement.

Enjoy your movie! Both boys are supposed to be gone Friday evening, so we're planning a date night then.

(I've finally taught each of them how I like my coffee brewed).

Do you have to have the coffee cooled down through a straw, or do they gently hold it for you, so that you can sip it?

Your attendants are blessed that you can tell them what you want. Sometimes it's hard for me to know what my sister wants. Are you able to speak normally to people in person, or do you have to type to John and the attendants? That question is not meant to be rude in any way, I'm just genuinely interested.

I do have to tell you something funny, though. I live at home, as does said disabled sister, and my dad is a pastor, and we live in a fairly large ranch style home (which, due to our church not owning their own building, comes in handy to have the church over). Between my sister, ministering to people in the church, and trying to take care of the house, and the fact that for a while there my dad was involved with helping out another church about 3 hours away, my mom put her foot down to my dad, and said, "Rebekah does all she can to help me (and by the way, I have arthritis) but we are both AT THE END OF OUR ROPE, we need someone to come clean." My dad said that was fine (good thing, because shortly after that, my mom came down with breast cancer). Because the house is so big, and the lady my mom got only comes once a week for 4 hours, it's not a case of having the whole house cleaned every week, so my mom has her do each week whatever task is most crucial. So on Wednsday mornings, this lady (who also goes to our church) that comes to clean and I chat quite a bit. Before I was taking care of my sister, I was teaching pre school, and I told our cleaning lady that taking care of her is SO much easier than teaching preschool, because my sister doesn't talk back, and the cleaning lady says, "Oh yes she does, maybe not in words, and maybe you don't realize it, but she does talk back, she knows what she wants."

I have a speech defect, but my two primary attendants understand me well. The other two are getting better, though sometimes John "translates." I've had greater difficulty with my speech since moving to New England. People here tend to be more impatient and self-absorbed, so they don't have the patience to concentrate on what I'm saying.

On the topic of The Notebook, John and I were both disappointed. The premarital sex made his later sacrificial love for her a lot less credible, and I was really uncomfortable with those scenes. If they'd focused on the romantic rather than the sexual, it would have been a much more powerful story.

Ah, that stinks.

I also had a question about your typing, if I may. I know you type with a stick, and I was wondering if you had a special keyboard with some of the basic words, or do you have to punch in each letter one by one? If so, I have the utmost respect for your patience.

And, although you can't feed yourself, do you have any hand use at all?

It's hard to find a movie without that .

That's one reason I liked the movie EVER AFTER..the most there was was some kissing..of course, imho, that's still too much for b4 marriage, but better than what most movies have.

I think the last 2 most decent movies I saw were Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, and Charlotte's web, lol.

I was even a little disappointed with some of the innuendos (sorry, spelling) in Enchanted, although there were some cute things about that movie, too.

Since John and I kissed before marriage, the kisses in "Enchanted" and "Ever After" didn't bother me. I respect your convictions on kissing before marriage, though, and encourage you to avoid movies that cause you to stumble. Just be careful to distinguish between personal conviction and legalism.

For instance, I have a personal conviction that I should cover my head in church. But I realize that the 1 Corinthians 11 passage is open to interpretation, so I don't impose my conviction on my sisters att church. I wear stylish hats, so people at church just think I like hats!

The kissing in "The Notebook" was obviously sexual. The relationship when they were young seemed more about passion than real love. So I had trouble understanding his love for her 60 years later. How did his youthful passion develop into committed devotion? John cried at the end, but I couldn't; I simply didn't believe he loved her that way.

I do type on a standard keyboard, by the way.

Hi Terri. Hi Rach.

Actually, I cover my head in church too. There's actually a support thread in WO,on that, if you're interested. And I don't think it's bad that you and John kissed before marriage..you were committed to each other..but in regards to kissing I had a bad experience being used by a guy that way..which led me to feel the way I feel. And I haven't found that movies that show kissing cause me to stumble, it's when they get beyond that.

The kissing in Enchanted didn't bother me either. It was when she put her hand on his bare chest while he was in his robe that bothered me. And, overall, I liked the movie..although when the animals were cleaning the apartment, I kept thinking about all the germs, lol.

So, for the standard keyboard, do you actually do one letter at a time?

Yup, one letter at a time. And I operate my mouse using the numeric pad on the right of the keyboard. Both PCs and Macs have accessibility controls that allow "peckers" like me to set up mouse keys and sticky keys.

I just clicked on you link. Beautiful.

Wow, you really are patient!!!!! I guess I can no longer think it's difficult when I'm trying to type one handed because I'm feeding my sister.

With my first boyfriend, it did go a little farther, I'm sorry to say. So I understand your boundies. That's why I don't believe the young couple in the movie had real love. If they had really loved each other, they would have stayed chaste. How did they get from that point to the beautiful, self-sacrificing love when they were elderly?
