Who said anything about CCM? All Gold City that I've ever heard has been pure Southern Gospel. I love them. Steve Ladd is one of my favorite tenors.

Gold City has and always will be a great group. They have gone through many "down" times over the years, but they have always bounced back. The current group is probably the best group they have had in a while. That is saying a lot because I am the biggest Jay Parrack fan. But the boys are getting the job done. The project that they are working on is going to be awesome! The guys are all just a class act!

I love Gold City. I used to be a pure Kingsmen fan, but I fell in love Gold City and haven't fell out of love.
I think Jonathan Wilburn is the cutest thing when he sings...I call him smiley...

Does anyone remember an early recording of GC where they sang "Ezekial saw the wheel" and Tim made some comments about wanting a piece of watermelon before he sang it? I have often wondered what that was all about? Was there any controversy over it? Seemed out of line to me....

I've wondered about that "watermelon" comment myself. I'm sure Tim regrets it now.
I've always liked Gold City.
I really liked the classic Gold City with Tim, Mike, Ivan, and Brian. That was who was in the group when I first heard them. I heard them in concert with the McGruders in Louisiana.
I also liked the group when Steve Lacey was singing lead for them. If you notice, however, with the first album with Steve singing lead, Mark sang most of the lead parts...I think with the exception of one song. Steve was an exceptional lead singer.
During the last years with Mark and Tim, I thought their sound was great, but their presentation was lacking...kind of dry...good singing, but not nearly as entertaining as the previous "classic" group I mentioned.
I think the BEST performance of Gold City was last June in Montgomery, AL. Bill Lawrence, Danny Riley, Jonathan Wilburn, Steve Ladd. Every member was on, and Steve was hitting those high Jay Parrack notes...clear as a bell! They were fired up that night!
On a side note, it seems to me that groups are better if there are more than one of the same type. For example, three quartets...Brian Free and Assurance, the Kingsmen, and Gold City were in the same concert that night. All of them were on top shelf that night. I've heard some since who were not. I wonder if the competition factor is to be considered there.
Did anybody notice that Steve Ladd looks like Geron Davis on one of the pictures with his goatee...or did Geron fill in one night in Baton Rouge.
I really don't look for Gold City to change from classic quartet style.

Well, that is why I made it plain...not MY opinion, just something I had been told, by somebody who "supposedly" knew. I think they are BOTH great singers! And I think I made it clear, that was my favorite Gold City group.
By the way, if you are REALLY irked, please say BALONEY...rather than BALOGNA! HEE HEE!

Time have changed. Political correctness would probably prohibit Tim ever doing that bit onstage again. (He actually did it on the live recording but was doing it "live" all the way up til around 1996.
For those who don't know what we're talking about, "Ezekiel Saw The Wheel" is what is often referred to as an "old negro spiritual". And, before singing it, Tim would affect the voice of an older African-American who wanted a piece of watermelon before he sang it.
During the years I've known Tim, I can tell you he's a kind-hearted gentleman. He never intended it to be demeaning or condescending toward anyone.

I'm referring to the "SGM screaming tenor" in general. But, if you're looking for an example, listen to "When He Calls I'll Fly Away" on GC's 20th Anniversary Celebration CD. I can think of no defintion of "quality" or "pitch" that refers to what Jay is doing on those endings. The encore ending is even worse.
Again, just my opinion!

I just saw Gold City in Bonifay, FL...first time in several years. I thought they did great. They sang a lot of the old stuff; When I Get Carried Away, In My Robe of White, I'm Not Givin' Up and so on. Daniel looks so much like his dad staning on stage. I really like Steve Ladd in the tenor spot and Mr. McCune did an outstanding job in the bass spot. They did great...I hope they stick with pure southern gospel.

I never checked it by singing it myself, but whenever I've heard the song on radio the super-high ending has sounded just fine to me.

This is from their "Live" project from 1982. I just finished listening to this project and what Tony said is correct. I don't think there was any malicious intent, but what you might say in 1982, you probably won't say in 2006.
This project, by the way, is awesome. I believe that it's Brian Free's first project with Gold City. It also has "On Victory Road", "Ain't God Good" and "In My Robe Of White" on it. Buy it if you get the opportunity. I just bought the cassette and converted it to mp3 files for my iPod.
