My daughter is growing tired of eating school lunches..I would like to pack her lunch, but, am running out of ideas:

1. There is no fridgerator to store her lunch box...can you recommend some real good lunch boxes that keep food cold and safe to eat?

2. She is growing tired of pbj...need some fresh ideas...

3. Anyone try Kid Essentials from Boost? I am concerned about the amount of sugar. I think my child needs to get more protein...but, concerned about keeping everything nice and cool and fresh...

Thanks...

C

We have used a variety of insulated lunch boxes and found they all keep food cold. We always throw in a personal size ice pack too. You can even get those in cute designs for kids.

Well, I was going to say PB&J. My kids eat that every day, with rare exceptions. The variety comes from the "sides", different fruits and veggies, different drinks, occasional desserts. With three of them, catering to a "need" for a large variety of taste would end up with me in the loony bin.

You should be able to keep things nice and cold with a good insulated bag and ice pack. That way she could have things like tuna sandwich, or cold cuts (or make tortilla wraps instead of sandwiches).

As for keeping things cold - Freeze her drink the night before and by the time she's ready to eat lunch in school it will be thawed and her lunch will be stored at a safe temp.

My kids take a lunch about twice a month. No more than that. They get to choose at the beginning of each month when the menus are brought home so I can be prepared for those days.

Blessings,

Garsy

Pinwheel sandwiches - roll meat, cheese, lettuce etc. up in a tortilla and slice it into rounds. My kid is little so I have only looked at the toddler supplement drinks but all the ones I have seen have too much sugar/chemicals for my taste. I imagine the big kid ones are the same way. If she likes them hard boiled eggs can provide some good protein as well.

I bought each of my kids a thermos that I can heat either leftovers, soup or chef boyardee type meals in. They cost around $10-12 for the good ones but they have already saved me money on school lunches. I found at Target.

I heat the thermos with hot water while I heat the food in the microwave which helps keep the food hot longer. You cannot put them in the microwave, so you have to heat the food separate then fill them. They keep food hot for up to 5 hours. It sounds like a lot of work but really it takes about 15-20 minutes to do three lunches.

My kids love this option because they have such a variety now. DD can have tomato soup, chili, leftover beans and rice, mac n cheese etc. DS basically has raviolli or beefaroni every day, his lunch is at 12:30 and I pack them at 6 am. He said his lunch is still warm every day.

Mac n cheese is less than a dollar a box and I split it between two kids (high schooler involved )
Easy Alfredo it is $.99 each cooks in 3 min
Chef Boyardees at WalMart $.88 Publix $1.25
Soup $1.00 - $2.50
Chili $1.25
Chicken/Yellow Rice

My son got tired of sandwhiches every day so sometimes I would pack him, yogurt, granola bar and fruit and a little dessert. Or instead of yogurt a cheese stick. My daughter liked a bagel sandwich, make the bagel the same as normal just not toast it then put a few slices of ham on it, its yummy cold.

Our 9 year old takes lunch 3 days a week, and we give her a mixture of options: sandwiches, wraps, salad, soups (using thermos as mentioned above). We'll ocassionally buy those Lean Cuisine tv dinners, cook them, and put them in the thermos.

You could also make your own "lunchables"...combining crackers, lunchmeat (sliced), and cheese. Then there are options for fruit (applesauce, yogurt, etc). Veggies, pretzels- there are so many options.

We are focused on making sure that DD's meals are healthy and balanced. It's easy to do, but it just takes some creativity.

We also have the insulated lunch box, and she never has a problem with food being at the wrong temperature (kids are more tolerant to that, I suppose!)

I make lunch sometimes for my wonderful DH ... does that count?

Popular choices:

Cheese and salami and whole grain crackers
Hummus wraps with turkey, ham, sprouts
homemade rice bowls
Chunky-style soups
leftover pasta and sauce

Sometimes, at home, I have lunch food at breakfast time and breakfast food at lunchtime ... that might be fun! You could make oatmeal with some fun sides!

Homemade lunchables
Frozen gogurt
Pretzels
Orange (already cut or peeled)
Strawberries
Whole wheat blueberry muffins
