if you believe in god you have to really work your faith in him , he has seen me and my family through alot.

Hi Nettiel,
Welcome to the Forums.
You're right. Our Faith sometimes does weaken, especially when things get difficult in life. That's the time to pray harder and ask God to help us. Not just in the difficulties of life but also in strengthening our Faith.

I've been thinking about faith a lot lately. I want more faith and have been asking God for it. But I'm wondering if I need to take some of the things I feel he's said to me more strongly into my at-times doubtful heart.

My pastor recently spoke about faith, and he explained the difference between strong faith and mature faith, and it was quite interesting.
Strong generally means "extreme or intense power; solid; firm."
Mature is "based on slow careful consideration" and means "to become fully developed."
You can have a strong faith in the existence of God, or any other belief about God, and no one can convince you otherwise. But, that strong, firm belief or faith doesn't necessarily bring you closer to God.
Having a mature faith, however, is not only being convinced of your beliefs but it is constantly learning, growing, and maturing in the things of God. Maturing in your faith not only strengthens your faith in God but it strengthens your relationship with God as you learn more about him, mature in that knowledge, and grow closer to him.

'If you have faith as a mustard seed you can say to this mountain 'be moved' and it will be moved into the midst of the sea.' (I hope I am quoting this rightly.) It isn't the amount of faith. This quote is Jesus' answer to the disciples asking that their faith be increased. It is just that you have to have genuine faith. Sometimes we have to talk to ourselves, read and go over the promises, and talk to God, to get ourselves back to the point where we are genuinely trusting God.

Yes. Genuine Christian faith is faith in Christ. It is not our faith that is great, it is the object of our faith, Jesus Christ, who is great.

I've had to do that a few times. Grab myself by the scruff of my neck, sit myself down and say, Now you will do as God says!!!!! I'm so threatening to myself.

By asking God for more faith, you are doing very well. But you must also learn to exercise the faith that you have, just as you exercise your body, it will grow stronger as you exercise it. So yes, you will need to take what He has said to you and believe it and exercise it. If it concerns sin, then work to overcome sin in your life. By walking obediently, we exercise our faith. By expecting what He has promised to come to pass, we exercise our faith. Spending time in the word of God will show us just what He has promised, so when we believe what He has said in His word and live expectantly for to come to pass, your faith will grow and become much stronger, especially when He brings it to pass.
