OK, I couldn't find the old guitarists thread so I'm starting a new one. This is for anyone who plays guitar or bass to discuss music, gear, tone, gigs - anything having to do with playing. Anyone who plays Christian or secular music is welcome. This would also be a good place to give a heads up on good deals and who was or was not good to deal with when doing business. Gear reviews would be great, too.

I'll start:

My main guitar is an '05 American Strat with Tex-Mex pickups, which runs into a Dunlop wah ---> Fulltone Trower OD ---> Fulltone GT 500 (for the boost) ---> Fender Hot Rod Deluxe with Weber 12F150 (the stock speaker stunk). I might use a chorus or phase from time to time. I would love to have a decent vibe pedal.

Who's next?

I have an Alvarez accousting something or other--it's 20 years old. And I have a Fender Strat knockoff that I bought solely because it's metallic pink.

wow! you must be looking in my closet. I have three Alvarez's (2 6str & 1 12str), a Squire Strat that I used to drive a Roland GR, 2 basses, both belonging to friends.
Years ago I used to be a Clapton/Santana clone until I had surgery that put a stop to all that. I just switched hands, so-to-speak, and got into acoustic fingerstyle. Recently I was invited to play bass for a couple of friends. We just do open stages and coffeehouses etc.

Hey Bro_Shane!

I play classical guitar.

I am teaching our son to play guitar. He wanted to play steel string, so I'm teaching him basic chord playing. I got him the Art and Lutherie Ami, which is really great for kids and he can keep it forever as a camp/travel/fun small guitar.

Do you plan to teach your kiddos?

My main guitar is a '93 American Standard Strat. At church we go direct and I am currently running through an ancient (er, I mean vintage ) Boss ME-5. I really love the pure, un-effected sound of this Strat that I am looking for just a straight ahead amp sim (one of the Tech21 Character Series pedals is in the running) and use my own effects sparingly. The ME-5 sucks your tone. I also have a '97 Lone Star Strat and a Deluxe Active 5-string Jazz Bass.

I typically am more into rhythm. I have 2 basses. My main bass is a BC Rich Warlock. I prefer BC Rich because it gives me that heavy thunder sound without the need of extra effects. I use it on a Gibson bass amp. Just for kicksthough, I occasional add a Metal Life distortion pedal. I have recently replaced the strings though with a heavier set of Bass Boomers. It gets loud without even having the volume passed 2.lol

*edited cause I cuaght my rude type o, finally*

If they show interest I will. I will probaby wing up with a drummer in the bunch, my luck. I love to play, and did so for a living back when i was a heathern.

My other gear:

ESP LTD M-100 FM
Xvaviere XV-500 (Zemantis copy)
XV -600, a semi-hollow thinline Tele copy with P-90s
An Xaviere Srat copy

Fender Vibro Champ XD
Bugera 6260 2x12 combo
Bugera 333 head
Crate V33H head
Palomino V-Series 2x12 Cab with two Celection 70/80s

Fulltone Trower overdrive
Fulltone GT-500 OD/distortion
BBE Soul Vibe
Dunlop Wah
POD XT Live
And a various assortment of other pedals (a few other OD with a delay or chorus thrown in)

I mostl use the Crate with the POD XTL and the 2x12 cab when I play at church. Other than that it's guitar, wah, drive, amp.

The Xaviere guitars are great guitars for the money. The pickups are GFS (which are really good). I had to recrown and dress the frets, set the action and intonation on all of them but I like doing that kind of stuff.

A couple weeks ago, one of my guitar strings broke. When I restrung it, the tension on the string was tighter than the others. No matter how many times I restring it, It always seems to have to stretch too tight in order to get the desired pitch. Does anyone know what the problem is? Am I stringing it wrong?

Depending on which string it is, it may be supposed to be tighter. The higher pitch strings like your B and E will be tighter than your low E and A.

You might be but it's very difficult to help you with something like this over the internet.
I do have a YouTube video up that teaches a couple different ways to properly tune a guitar if you're interested.
Head to YouTube and search gtrdave.
You'll find it there. Maybe that will help you.

Not with a properly gaged set of strings. The tension should be even across all strings.

to the OP: Did you replace just the one string or the whole set? If just the one, it may be from a heavier set than the rest of the strings resulting in it being under more tension. If that string is not a middle string (D, G) it could start to pull your kneck out of allignment by side-loading it.

If it's at the correct pitch... how can it be too tight? The pitch is equal to the tension. Am I misunderstanding something here... or should I just remember that I'm not a physics genius and it's all up in the air?

Ah. It is the high E string. I just remember the original string being looser than this one is now.

I bought 6 new strings, but only replaced the top string. It feels so tight that, If I was to tune it to GCFBDG, the top string would probably break. Ooo, I wouldn't want my guitar to bend :(

I mean, it's seems like it shouldn't be, but it is truly tighter.
