I have a new laptop with Vista Operating System. Does anyone know if my "old" XP applications (Lotus Smart Suite, QuickBooks Pro) will work on it? I haven't had time to try yet, but the salesman said they won't work.

No one is going to know because they won't put the time in testing old applications, they spend most of their time working to do upgrades for existing products.

All you can do is try it. There is supposed to be a mode in which you can run the apps in XP, 98 mode, etc but you won't know how it works til you try it.

But we run a lot of old software and a lot of times it does work, may give some minor errors, but just because it wasn't designed for vista doesn't mean it won't work. The salesman has know way of knowing.

How well the programs will work will depend on what versions. The latest version of Quickbooks is supported on Vista, but older versions may have problems. I think I've read that only the 2006 and 2007 versions will get patches for Vista, but don't quote me, it could just be the 2007 only. Quickbooks has a webpage about Vista http://support.quickbooks.intuit.com/support/vista/productcompatibility.aspx

As for SmartSuite, IBM says that it will work on the 32-bit version of Vista, but not on the 64-bit version because of legacy code (64-bit Vista doesn't allow 16-bit code to run for security purposes). Here is IBM's page on the matter. Unless you specifically chose the 64-bit version of Vista, chances are you have the 32-bit.

My software is about 4-5 years old. As far as the new computer being 64- or 32-bit, I don't have a clue! I may just leave the old stuff on the old computer and not mess up my new one.

Thanks, y'all!

Some work and some don't. I got a new laptop with Vista. Some of my programs worked and some I have to get new ones. I think it depends on the programs. For example Money 2005 didn't work but my 2005 version of Works did.

I agree. Some do and some don't. I wish I would have just stayed with XP.

Windows 98. Millenium. Vista.

Three strikes! They should be out.

I hesitate to buy a new PC or notebook because the manufacturers keep pushing the most insane excuse for an upgrade that Microsoft has ever introduced. Too bad.

I'm going to experiment with a Mac in my next purchase. I don't know if it's going to be any better. But, it sure can't be worse!

You guys should check out Ubuntu. it is a linux based operating system. it is 100% legally free, it is not affecte dby viruses, spyware, and all the applications for it are free. plus if you use a program called wine, you may be able to use your old windows program on it. It is much faster ,and more effecient than vista and is quite secure, and you can customize pretty much anything you want on it. I use it on my laptop..

In my latest round of Vista problems, I used a Ubuntu LiveCD and found hardware detection was flawless and if anything, quicker/easier than in Windows. The only showstopper right now is Microsoft Word, which is seen to be more and more advanced (over OpenOffice) the more things I do in word processing.

I've never used WINE before, but would consider it. How slow would it be to run? Could I open up a "window" with it running, so I could use MS Word, but still use the Ubutnu side for browsing, et al? Or does it basically take over your computer and not let you do anything else, until you shut it down?

Unless the software offers an upgrade ....one can go to the Microsoft website and check out Virtual PC 2007, which may allow a virtual partition in Vista to load an operating system that will run your programs

If the applications complete the install process but won't run in Vista you can then right click on the particular application, select properties, compatability, and then run in xp mode.

I'm so glad my new laptop was still available with Windows XP (bought it in June, two weeks before the "deadline" to get machines with XP)
..
XP was the greatest thing ever - it is a great operating system. I have not had ANY problems with XP but had loads of problems with other versions, and I have used Vista (reluctantly) on other computers.

I'm sticking with XP until I am FORCED to upgrade....which is a misnomer. It's no upgrade to go to an inferior product.

Greetings,

Aren't XP and Vista basically the same OS, with little difference?

Speaking of older versions....
I never tried compatibility with older software until yesterday,
Many times when switched into comparability mode... if XP for example does not have the driver to begin with.... it will try to locate the driver… or give a link to the MS knowledge base ….or a link to the manufacture website elsewhere....but I believe that applies more to device drivers

For example, I have about 8 PCs with XP Pro Sp3 and 2 Win 2003 servers in a lab environment that I assembled for practice for my exams

I have old CD Burners and a program called Easy CD Creator 5 Platinum, (at least 8 years old)
I installed it into XP and even though I received a warning in XP that the program was not compatible, it still installed the program ...and by switching to capability mode…it did not fix the problem.

I did some research on the Roxio website and found that they offeredXP compatible drivers for this legacy software, and as a matter of fact I just installed this update yesterday ... and now can burn CDs without any problems on XP

Otherwise in situations such as this the best bet is to just install the virtual machine manager VMware to run your programs, (actually one can load any OS into a VM)
Other than that just find yourself an older PC for cheap and install your old OS and programs on it and then network it to the new PC.

For example, to avoid the costs of running 2 PCs separately…I have a PC set up with XP with a virtual machine that contains WIN98 SE, (not a dual boot) ….and when I want to use the older programs I just run the virtual partition and boot into WIN 98 OS
..simply because I have a lot of old software still that work properly, but not in XP, as well as scanners and devices that only run on a DOS based OS... such as WIN 98 SE

Think of it this way…
And remember computers reflect the way of the world $$…. and the … the Bile says in
2Pe 2:22 - Show Context
Of them the proverbs are true : "A dog returns to its vomit," and, "A sow that is washed goes back to her wallowing in the mud."

Just an observation …Meaning... … in principal!
….It’s easier with a virtual machine manager to return to the old (vomit) than it is to go forward …to Vista ($$$)
Whereas going forward in Christ is for free!
… But with the world standards (marketing) it costs us $$ going forward… and its funny how they offer returning to the old (vomit) for free! LOL!!

SO if one is looking for “updated” drivers ….the first thing to do is to always buy popular programs to begin with… and then wait it out, (wait on the Lord!)

Speaking for us home users and the overall boycotts of Vista.....Eventually…. in the mean time…if no one falls for the “upgrade” bit (forcing us to buy the new stuff)…the quicker the updates will become available!! such as SP3 for XP and so on….

Personally… to counter act the way of the world standards....I have saved and still use a majority of my older PCs, devices and programs for home use; and have not paid a dime for years on a majority of any new equipment; and such as in the example given above… with the Easy CD Creator 5 Platinum have also found many updates to XP for the older stuff thereafter....

Don't know about under the hood, but given the compatibilitly issues I've heard about, I don't think they're basically the same there. The visual interface is very different, and that extends into the Office 2007/2008 applications as well. DD#1 had to take a computer literacy test that was based on Office 2007, and neither one of us knew the answer to most of the questions.

I hear ya...I am still in the ladder part of MOS 2003 at the moment, I have a copy of MOS 2007 but they changed all the links around!..... and at his point I just need to finish 2003 ...and go fishing later in 2007!

Nope, there are rather big changes under the hood, especially for the 64-bit version. I'm not completely clear on exactly how they differ, but I know that Vista was originally supposed to be even more different than the final version was, but MS was too ambitious in their goals.
