After my experience with Ubuntu 8.10, I could not wait for 9.04 to fix all of its bugs. At that time I decided "no more x.10 Ubuntu releases". But after reading about some of the features and bug fixes included in 9.10, I decided to go ahead and upgrade one of my non-mission-critical desktops at work. I will leave my main machine (and thus mission-critical) on Ubuntu 9.04 for the interim. I really like the visual updates. Yeah, I know that the visuals are not substantive, but I still like them. I like the fact that I got Firefox 3.5.4 out of the box with the install. That was pleasing. During the upgrade, I noticed the installer decided to remove a few "obsolete" packages without offering alternatives, or later versions. I don't necessarily like that but nothing was so critical that reinstalling the later version would not make me happy. This was probably done to prevent version mismatch nightmares for synaptic. I have not tried anything with the Ubuntu One service so I have no comments. The only settings I "lost" were the mods I made to gdm for launching synergy client. But that was a 1 minute fix. Anyone else have any experience with this latest release?

Ok, I am going to download it now; I have been waiting for ages for this release. Can't believe I missed it.

Started to install it Sunday eve. Apparently did something wrong and it started to overwrite my fresh install of Win7. Backed out fast and had to rebuild the Win7 directory system with chkdsk.

Tuesday, November 03, 2009 The update to 9.10 was the smoothest thus far (I started with 8.04). Everything worked without waiting for further updates. My Ubuntu install is on a try boot laptop with WinXP, Ubuntu and eComstation (OS/2). When installing I had to make sure the Grub was installed the Linux partition because I use eComstation Boot Manager for multi booting. Phil

Wednesday, November 04, 2009 I still have a copy of the install disks for Microsoft OS/2 version 1.0. eComStation is the continuing development of the operating system from Warp 4.5. Version 2.0 is now in Silver Release. Linux and eCS play well together as long as one remembers to but the grub on the Linux install partition. There is even a user group devoted to users of both. My son did the install last evening. I had to run chkdsk AGAIN on the Win7 partition. No wireless yet on the Ubuntu side, driver problem.

So I found my first 9.10 glitch. Apparently there is something amiss with using Eclipse and Ubuntu 9.10 involving some buttons. Not sure of all the details but as I use variations of Eclipse as my main IDE(s), I will stick with 9.04 on my main box for now. Slow processing? Ubuntu and Linux in general typically have rank behind Windows in multi-media applications benchmarks. This is chalked up to the fact that Linux does not have the proprietary codecs and compressors that vendors provide to Microsoft and they include in Windows distributions. However, for straight out business apps where multi-tasking (and multi-processing) are the critical factors, Ubuntu and Linux in general have a long track record of kicking Windows' pants in such benchmarks. But yeah, if you are doing a lot of video/audio/graphics work, I think the benchmarks well demonstrate Windows has the lead. Since I don't normally do a lot of that, I never notice anything but being amazingly faster performance over Windows.
