I clam up when I hear about "killing babies" or "divorcing the darling". They are talking about scripts or characters in the script or sometimes even the plot. I don't like the wording. What do you guys call it? I would rather say to perform an operation. Or give it a make over or something like that. Not killing babies and divorcing darlings. It just doesn't sound right.

I often use the term "killing your babies" (or "killing my babies"), and I never thought about it. If writers were just coming up with the idea, we would probably find something else, but the term has an established meaning now, so I'll probably keep using it.
Actually, I don't "kill my babies." I just remove them from their birth homes (books, articles, or stories) and put them in foster care (store them away somewhere) until I can find them better adoptive homes (in different books, articles, or stories).

I mentioned it in class; and I speak with passion and it has authority so the teacher said that perhaps I can change it. So I shall.

Yes. I don't like that terminology. I have lived too close to the truth of it and will not entertain the behaviour even if it is metaphorically speaking.
