Ladies and Gentlemen;

Whereas:

a fairly large percentage of those on the Singles Forum have courageously admitted to the fact that they are registered on one or more online dating sites; and

Whereas:

Online dating is a new and different sort of relationship building tool which is fraught with scary and difficult concepts and skills; and

Whereas:

There may be those frequenting this forum whose experience in online dating could benefit us all;

It is therefore resolved that we shall have a thread for Online Dating Support.

Welcome to The Meet Market.

Here, you may come to ask your questions concerning online dating. You may confess that yes, you have finally registered on an online dating site. You may come to vent about your rejection statistics. You may encourage your brothers and sisters in the Lord who are struggling with online dating. You may review your favorite (or least favorite) dating site for the edification of the sistern and brethren.

Keep it clean. Keep it honest and transparent. Keep it within the TOS--i.e., no posting your personal ads, even for comment and critique by brothers and sisters in the Lord. Don't bash your brother or sister in the Lord for their stance on online dating. What you believe is what you believe, although reasoned discussion is welcome. NO FLAMES.

And above all...have fun, everybody. May God grant we all find our way OUT of the Singles thread in His time.

Great idea!

Christian Cafe is what lead me to CW. Really. I was sooooo naive after my divorce and their tag line was something like "Where Christians meet" and I thought it was what we have here, a social thing. Duh!

Imagine my surprise!

Same here. My brother and sister-in-law keep urging me to (specifically eHarmony) but it doesn't feel right. Yet. Would be a subject of much prayer before/if I would.

I would have no problem with it, especially as I realy do not have much access to eligible young women.

I don't think I have the energy to comment.

I just wanted to say something about eharmony. I set up an account and started getting matches. But the matches just seem to give too generic of information about a person for me to be interested enough to pay that kind of money.

Besideherself, if you don't mind me asking, which dating service did you join? I checked out a couple of sites yesterday which claimed that they were a christian site, but when I looked at the members, there were a few that are looking for some fun and intimate encounters. I was shocked. I mean, they claimed to be christians. I guess, since the sites were free, they attract all sorts of characters.

I signed up on Christiancafe.com

I've contacted about 60 people. Got no returns other than "Thanks but no thanks"

Do I have too much info on my profile? Am I not holding my mouth just right when I send the email? I haven't a clue.

Now I have been contacted by some people who are way out of my demographic (That is, they obviously don't meet requirements that I blatantly state in my profile. Such as, they say they don't want any more children and I state that having more children is vitally important to me. Obvious mismatch)

If you're interested pm me and I'll send the link to my profile. (I actually thought is was pretty good)

HEY! Maybe it's my deodorant (sniffs) Nope. It seems to be working.

If I'm going to try a dating site, they need to have a good filtering system. eHarmony is off to a good start, I think. They have their little exam that you take and the results are based on a lot of research. I don't know if, right now, that's good enough of a filtering system. I think it's better than some sites that say, "Hey, you're a man looking for a woman. Well, here's a woman looking for a man. You two are perfect for each other! You're a scorpio and she's a cancer!" I'm waiting for others to follow eHarmony and possibly improve on what they have.

I've had people inquire about Christiancafe.

It's free for the first 14 days I think, but you can earn extra days in various ways. It's $99 for a year. Everyone is supposed to be Christian but from the profiles I've read some of them aren't.

Prairie Hiker;

Just in the last week I've joined two. I joined one kind of on the fly that was on Facebook...it's called LoveAccess. Not necessarily Christian...I didn't really care, because I figured I just wouldn't contact anyone that didn't make it obvious in their profile that they were fanatically Christian. It was free. I've sent "interest" to several, had several look at me, but no takers. (guys, is there anyone of you out there that would be willing to take the risk and look at my pics and tell me, very gently, if I'm totally repulsive?)

Then over the weekend eHarmony had free communication, so I took advantage of that, then ended up subscribing. I've had several matches that I tried to communicate with who closed the communication due to different reasons. Others have failed to respond.

I do feel more confident about the eHarmony matches. They seem to be less the type that can't even capitalize their sentences, less flaky, more real. Time will tell.

My thought about those sites that claim to be "Christian" is that Christian comes in a LOT of different flavors, and even some who claim to be Christ-followers have no problem with "intimate encounters". For me, I figure I just don't contact those who state clearly that they want that.

I'll post it on here, later (not at my home computer, so don't have the link) but there is at least one article out there (and probably more) that make good points about online Christian dating: if any body knows of some, please post links here.

Hmmm. Maybe they don't want to get beat up by the Overwhelming Humility? It does seem rather aggressive.

Is this one of those applications that you can join on facebook? I'm always nervous about which applications I add on Facebook, since it shows my friends everything I do or update. I'll have to take a look, anyways.

Broyce;

That's right...it was just one of the advertisements on the side and I clicked on it...said it was for singles 40 and over: I qualify. I thought it would help to narrow the field a bit, agewise.

It's a standalone, and not part of facebook.

Over the years, I've joined a number of sites, including eHarmony, where I met a woman who was very compatible with me. Unfortunately, we felt after some examination that it was not meant to be that we should marry each other.
If I had some disposable income, I'd go back to eHarmony.

My advice, other than pray a lot, take it slow, be discerning and wise (like a serpent =):

Try to mostly talk with LOCAL people... (unless it is a REALLY exceptional person)

Keep it light and fun and take it with a grain of salt, if someone doesn't reply right away, give them the benefit of the doubt (like they broke their leg and are in hospital,) instead of assuming they hate your guts and the world is unfair and now you are depressed and disillusioned about the opposite gender.

Don't trust too much too fast, just be curious about people, but stay safe (don't send personal info/#s)

Remember that if it isn't moving towards meeting in real life, it's just entertainment.

Ladies: if a guy is too eager to talk "lewd"-ly, then you have your answer as to his interest and motivation. Tell that immature guy your standards are higher and throw him to the curb.

Guys: if a girl is too eager to talk money (or expenses/trips/possessions), then you have your answer as to their interest and motivation. Drop them unless you reall wanna be a sugar daddy.

I tried Eharmony for 5 months and had no luck plus, I think it's a little too expensive. I was hardly getting any hits until I changed my geographical location to look 300 miles+ from my home. Then I was getting hits on people who lived 3-7 hours away from me. I'm not really looking for a long distance relationship so I did not renew my membership. Also, I agree with what someone else said, the questions are very vague and you can not look at all the people, only who Eharmony chooses to send to you.
Now I'm just praying and leaving my love life in God's hands. I feel like when he thinks I'm ready, he'll show me the man I'm meant to spent the rest of my life with.

They do advertise as a Christian dating service with half a million christian members. I think it's a faith base dating service and not just for christians. As I said, both sites that I visited has a lot of men who claimed to be Christians but are seeking intimate encounters. So, I guess since they are free, they'll attract all sorts of characters.
