Has anyone had any luck with temp services in landing a full time job? I have been with John Doe Services for a little over a year now after having been laid off. I told them from the beginning that I wanted something temp to perm and I have been getting jobs such as in Light Industrial when I have experience in date entry, customer service and administration. I had to recently have my unemployment benefits extended and when I received the review in the mail, John Doe Services would have to pay my unemployment. About a couple of weeks ago, they offered me a light industrial job 3rd shift 7pm to 7 am packing and moving stuff around. This job was located in Wellford, which is about 25 miles away. I told them 3 days prior that I would go no further than Greer and wanted assignments within a 20 mile radius, which I say is reasonable. I also told them back in April that I had Ministry obligations on Monday and Thursday nights. I turned it down saying that I cannot give up my ministry obligations, which I have had for the past 3 years. I thought that that was the end of it. When I went to pick up my unemployment check, it was not there and I called the hotline and I had an unresolved issue and no check would be issued. I went down to the unemployment office and they told me that I had turned down a job and I figured out what it was and I had to answer a few questions. I saw the fax that John Doe said and the position they put down was that of a Machine Operator and of course I had no experience operating machinery. They asked about the last job that I did and it was in Administration which is a complete 180 degree turnaround. They also asked about the shift I worked and I told them 1st, which I have always worked and indicated that on my original application. I never indicated that I was available for 3rd. She also had to call my supervisor and asked her a few questions and it is now sent to Columbia for review. For the past 3 weeks, I have not received any money and I'm in a rock between a hard place. It seems that my temp service is putting me in positions just for the sake of filling positions instead of trying to find something for me that will fit me. I have not worked since May 16th. I have been putting applications in with other temp services and around at other places. I believe that my temp services offered me that job so that they would not have to pay the unemployment and they knew that I would not take it, based on the information I have described here. I have an eligibility review this coming Monday and we'll see what happens. I used this service back in 1999 and was with them for 6 months and got a full time job at that company. Now the company has a whole new staff and there doesn't seem to be sense of urgency of finding me something temp to perm. They offer me those light industrial jobs that don't lead anywhere and I have to take them since I need the money. They are filling positions for the sake of filling positions. Of course they always thank me for helping them out  I'll let you know what happens and would like to hear from others out there about their experiences.

My experience with temp agencies has overall been pretty good. However, if you turn them down for any reason, I have found that they will cut back on the jobs they offer or will stop calling you all together.
It can be hard to get unemployment benefits. I don't know if you can get them when you've turned down work or not.

I've had both good and bad experiences with temping. the bad experiences have been doing work I don't like, being treated differently, and having the job end at a sudden notice. As in Friday night on my way home, getting a call with them telling me not to return. the good is that I've gotten to work for some great companies.
I does mess up your benefits, and I would keep at it with the agency and with the unemployment office so you can get your benefits resumed. Keep at it.
in the meantime, pray for a job closer to home and that is more in lne with your bailiwick. god bless you.

Basically from what I understand, you can get unemployment benefits and they have to offer you a job that is comparable to the last job that you held. For example a lawyer can't be offered a job as a cashier. When I turned this job down, I had no idea that this was sent to Columbia until I got the recorded message that there was an unresolved issue and that is what it was. Usually they have no problem with me turning down assignments because they would rather have me do that than quit mid assignment, which I have not done. This is still being reviewed and we'll see what happens. They (the temp service) does have a strike against them since the position was for a machine operator and I have no experience in operating machinery. The girl that conducted this interview and asked me the questions said that temp services do this all the time in trying to get out of paying unemployment benefits. We'll see what happens. Meantime, I have been applying at other services and other places as well, but I would not recommend this service to anyone. I'll keep you posted as to when I receive the review and the end results.

Also, keep in mind that you can keep appealing the decision that the unemployment office makes if it is not in your favor. One person that worked there told my friend to keep appealing, and she would likely get what she wants.

I can relate to eaglelady's situation. Temps can be fun for someone like me who is in transition, student, recovered workaholic. I had no choice but apply for temps. In fact the moment I changed my option to temp instead of perm, the agencies started to flood me with temp offers which I accepted with pleasure. I have worked with one of the most wonderful folks as well as one the worst samples of people you can ever work with. In some cases, I had to call the agency and tell them frankly that I was not interested to work with those people any more and they had to replace me...and YES true those agencies stopped calling me back, but so what? My life and dignity are much more important than $$$ or mistreatment. In the end you will find that you wind up with those agencies who appreciate you and your principles and know that you're someone who is after Quality work and folks not just money machine working with whoever passes your path. And that's what happened in my case. In every job offer, I would ask God if He wanted me to be there or not. Guess what? He always answered me and showed me His will. 
Overall, the experience had it pros and cos even tho I can say the pros outweigh the cons. It enabled me to get the best of both worlds make some $$$ to help me not just get by, but also tithe, save, embark on God's calling in my life and pay for my courses and to take a breather among them and Have some FUN which was something missing in my earlier life when I was younger working like a donkey.
The key word here is Perseverance. I would highly recommend you to never give up!!! It all has to do with God's timing!!! I remember applying to so many places and Not getting any positive results whatsoever till one day all of sudden out of the blue....I was bombarded with SO many temp offers and I was rejoicing like never before.

Just wanted to give everyone an update. The Unemployment Commission ruled in my favor and I will be getting back monies owed to me while this case was being reviewed. I can't tell you what a relief this is to have this all be over. I have also accepted a part time job delivering pizzas at Dominoes. They do pay a wage, mileage allowance, and tips. It is going good so far and at times can be frustrating finding these places, but it gets me out of the office so to speak.

You need to keep your options and mind open. Been there, done that with temp services. They make their money by getting paid more then what you get paid for your services. To get you the ideal job, or a full time/perm job would be to cut their own pay checks. After working for a company for a while, I've had a lot of luck applying for the job that the temp service sent me to. When God closes a door, he opens a window. Too much of the employment industry is slavery, except with pay.
Psalms 32:8-9 (the verses by which I live) says "I will instruct you in the way you should go; I will counsel you and watch over you. Do not be like the horse and mule, which have no understanding but must be controlled by bit and bridle or they will not come to you."

I have not had a good experience with temp agencies. I had one call me to ask if I was interested in a position at a real good company in my town and could they send my resume over to it. Of course I said yes. I was called 3 days later telling me the company hired me on the spot after looking at my resume - site unseen!! I had to fill out alot of paperwork in the next 2 days, go for a drug test and then wait. A week later the company withdrew their offer - no explanation or anything. I quit a job after 13 1/2 years in one place. The Lord said leave, so I did - I was ready. I have sent out over 300 resumes in the past 2 months - I know that I know that it has been a step by step process and each step has been ordered by the Lord. His timing is everything.
