Hello! I've recently come upon the idea of getting certified to teach (either ESL or Early-childhood) online, due to the fact we are not living in the US. My husband and I are both teaching ESL overseas, and we're both interested in continuing to teach in the US when our two-year contract is over. My question is how accepted are online teaching certifications in the job field? How easy would it be to get a job with only a certification? Should we go for another degree or a Master's instead? We both have BAs in other fields (linguistics and biblical studies). Thanks!

good question! I am a beginner in this field, and really need to learn more about teaching English, to teenagers.

Hmmmm . . . . . I'm not sure how this would work, most states have their own certification process, do you know which state you will be living in when you return to the U.S.? I would check the state's education website and find out what their process is, and maybe give the board a call and find out what they would accept.

From what I've seen (and I've been out of the loop for awhile) Early Childhood is easy to get online and is widely accepted (depeding on what kind of job you want it's easy to get a job in early childhood without a degree but a degree can help). ESL is another thing altogether. Some school districts will accept you as an ESL aid, but an actual ESL teacher would have to be certifed and most certification means a hands-on program of training and classes. Now education is a flexible field in cities where they need teachers (say..Chicago) but if you want to work in a more affluent area with a better salary they tend to be more conservative about who they accept. It's hard to get a job on overseas experience alone. Again, this is what I saw 10-12 years ago when I was teaching high school English and adult ESL. Things are changing in some of the hands-on fields. I know that I can get a Master's in Library and Information Science online now, where it was considered scandolous even just a few years ago. You may want to see if you can get an ESL Master's online. At the very least you may want to send an email to the Department of Education in the state you hope to live in. They can give you much more information.

The certification process includes some student teaching and testing in the state where you'll teach but is done through any university. A job in Georgia, without teacher's certification pays 1/3 less than a job with a certificate and many states won't accept a BA or even Masters not in the teaching field. I sent you a link and some info. Hubby is doing this right now. He has an engineering degree.

Thanks, all! I'll look into online college Diane suggested and the ESL Master's. My only concern is meeting the requirements for the degree overseas - without an internship or experience in an American classroom.
