Yesterday I picked up a CD I've been trying to find: ".38 Special: The Very Best of the A & M Years" Great CD with tons of their classic hits like Fantasy Girl, Hold On Loosely, and my personal favorite "Chain Lightning."
I love Southern Rock music. Some of my favorite bands include Georgia Satellites, ZZ Top, Charlie Daniels Band, and of course, The Allman Bros., and the Outlaws. Does anyone else like this kind of music, and if so what band are you into?

Oh yes, I like Southern Rock. For a time back in the 70's that's about all I listened to. It's a genre that a lot of artists get lumped into, but if you listen to each group, there are differences.
Want musical intricacy? Listen to the Allman Brothers (the giants of the genre, in my opinion) or Marshall Tucker Band. Want straight ahead boogie? Put on some SKynyrd. Want some nasty blues based down and dirty? ZZ Top does it for me.
I still enjoy putting on "Eat a Peach" or "Tres Hombres" from time to time. Real music, for real people.

While I was never huge on .38 Special, I did grow up loving the Allman Brothers, Dixie Dregs, Skynyrd, Marshall Tucker, Molly Hatchet, Atlanta Rhythm Section, Little Feat (I know, they're as much West Coast as Southern, but still...), Elvin Bishop, Black Oak Arkansas, Blackfoot, Pure Prarie League, etc.
The Allmans pretty much paved the way for many of those groups, but they all had some interesting moments in their time. Good idea for a thread!

How can anybody NOT love southern rock? I too listen to it yrs. ago and still now. The Band, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Elvin Bishop, Atlantic Rhythm Section, Rossington Collins Band ( I saw them with Lynyrd Skynyrd awhile back, present day members though.)Little Feat, Charlie Daniels Band, Molly Hatchet (Danny Joe Brown's voice was awesome), Blackfoot, The Fabulous Thunderbirds, The Outlaws, New Riders of the Purple Sage, The Allman Brothers, The Winter Brothers, and the Ozark Mountain Daredevils (they sang - If You Want to Get to Heaven)

I like it well enough. Lynyrd Skynyrd is obviously a great band. 38 Special had some great songs, they were a cross of southern rock and arena rock (Survivor's song writer co-wrote some of their songs). Others I've heard but I'm not an expert on. I do like some of The Outlaws' songs.
BTW: I'm looking forward to the 25th anniversary special edition of ZZ Top's "Eliminator". Not only is the album remastered but it'll have a DVD with the music videos and other goodies. Those songs were all over the place in my middle school years.

I skipped my senior prom in 1981 to see Marshall Tucker!!
My favorites.. .38 Special, Skynyrd, Blackfoot, ARS, Outlaws...I'm into a lot of the southern rock sounding country folks too..Travis Tritt, Alan Jackson, Gretchen Wilson...Oh yeah! I have a LOT of very fond memories of that stuff...

This thread costed me money: I just picked up The Outlaws - "Platinum & Gold Collection". Walmart's website had it for $8.88 (a very Walmarty price, they like their 8s), a little under $12 with shipping. I thought about getting their debut self titled CD but I really wanted "Ghostriders in the Sky" and to a lesser extent "Hurry Sundown" and that would have meant buying 3 CDs. I'm not that big a fan of The Outlaws.
So TorchHeart will be receiving a bill soon. 
BTW: not really southern rock but does anyone remember Outlaws bassist turned Christian rocker Rick Cua. Quite a popular Christian rocker in the mid to late 80s.

I saw ZZTop in concert in the mid to late 70's--probably 1976-77, before the "Cheap Sunglasses" era. It was cool. I was cool. Those were the days....

Know what, I think "we" are going to do that. I'm gonna upgrade from "P&G" to "Green Grass & High Tides". It has all three of the songs you mentioned whereas the one I got has only "There Goes Another Love Song" (I can't imagine any Outlaws best of without it). Walmart wants $7 more for it but Amazon only wants $10.99, just $2 over. I'll probably have to eat the $2 shipping charge when I bring P&G back to Walmart. It bugs me on a "pride" level but really, what's $2?
Thanks for the heads up. Please feel free to start more threads here. My credit limit has at least $100 left on it. 
Speaking of that, it pains me to order just one CD from Amazon. A "Second Helping" of Lynyrd Skynyrd might be desirable also.

Too late, Walmart had "Second Helping" for $6.88 so I snatched it up.
I usually don't do greatest hits unless there are only a few songs I really like from the band. Like The Outlaws. But thanks for the suggestion.
I also got The Allman Brothers Band Best Of (I know what I just said but $6.88, come on, again not a big favorite). And I also blame that on this thread (and my inability to comprehend that $6.88 isn't a synonym for "free, please take one" ).

Second Helping went 2x platinum and you need to get the album Street Survivors. It was released in 1977 three days before their tragic plane crashed. We have both on vinyl as we didn't get rid of our albums and I look in antique stores, you can sometimes find bargains and the albums are sometimes in pretty good shape. The sound quality is so much better I think, the turntables made today are a better quality also I rarely hear any ticks or scratches but that takes away from the nostalga for some people. Crosley makes a good one and they have one that will convert albums into cds.

"Street Survivors" may also be a future purchase, especially if I see it at Walmart for the magic price ($6.88). As far as vinyl goes while I understand that many people find vinyl sounds better I'll stick with CDs. Convenience factor and all not to mention that I collect them (some have stamps, others cards, me CDs). But thanks for the suggestion.

Wanna spend some money on something really worthwhile? Pick up the deluxe edition of Eat A Peach. You get that incredible album plus the Filmore East album. Worth every penny.
For all you Feat fans, They record most of their concerts and sell them through their web site. I could spend a million dollars there!

I used to have Little Feat's "Waiting for Columbus" album. Dixie Chicken and Feats Don't Fail Me Now are two songs from that one that come to mind.

Never listened to most of those bands, but the Allman Bros, Charlie Daniels and Marshal Tucker I liked a lot.
Never cared much for Skynyrd. The guitar work was (IMO) repetitive and bad.
Winter Brothers? I am a fan but never really thought of either of them as SR. Both of their sounds were shaped by Rick Derringer (2nd guitar for Johnny Winter And and lead guitar on EW's White Trash) who wrote a lot of their fare and produced all their albums. He was from Ohio. (lots of good guitarists from the big O - Derringer, Phil Keaggy, Glenn Schwartz, Joe Walsh)
Liked most of what I heard from ZZ Top. Some of the others I know by name but am unfamiliar with their stuff.
If the Atlanta Rhythm Section is SR, would not Classics IV be included as well as they are pretty much the same band, minus the lead singer?
No mention of Creedence Clearwater Revival? quote:
