I haven't read the whole article, but I like this part, which I was going to point out if it wasn't already in the article:

I don't know much about the causes of alzheimers/dementia, but I have heard that keeping your mind active in old age will ward off chances of alzheimers. So it makes sense that an "oh, woe is me... I should just give up on life" kind of attitude would hasten the disease.

lol - very good response! there's all sorts of studies that lead to similiar conclusions. these couple i found real quick are related to divorce (as opposed to never married):
Life expectancies for divorced men and women are significantly lower than for married people (who have the longest life expectancies). it seems there are some health benefits to get married ... of course if your bride were to make you eat cheesecake, that could reduce said benefits ;)

By the time most people get to the age where one gets Alzheimer's, many of them are no longer married. (In other words, a high percentage of elderly people are widows.
It's like a study linking the wearing of shorts to the eating of ice cream ....

That is a good point - correlation does not necessarily imply causation. But at least the text quoted in this thread notes they are referring to divorcees and people widowed at a young age. Sounds like they're not even looking at those widowed late in life.
