When you are traveling at night, do you allow your teenagers to sleep in the car without their seatbelts?

Never. Here's a link for you-- http://www.beaumontenterprise.com/sports/local/racing_against_drunk_driving.html . Basically, this friend's friend was in the back seat of a car. She was not wearing her seatbelt and was ejected during an accident. Yah, it's great that my friend will be racing this weekend to raise money for MADD, but it would be much better had her friend not be killed in the first place.

No...never. My kids can sleep with their belts on. People have the false belief that because the backseat is safer....you don't need seatbelts. Not true. His put up an excellent example of that..... and lets not forget Princess Diana...who probably would not have died...had she been wearing her seatbelt in the back seat.

Seatbelts are a requirement from the moment they set their bottoms in the seat of the car til the moment they are exiting the car. The car doesn't move unless all seatbelts are fastened properly. Regardless of age. Blessings, Garsy

I wouldn't let other adults in my backseat without their seatbelt.

Good grief, no! Quite apart from the fact that it's against the law here in the UK (and for very good reason!) My two sleep perfectly well in the car at night with seat belts on, with a small pillow. I don't see why there'd be any need to undo the seatbelts in order to sleep.

My sister and her 15 yr old were in a horrible accident last night; they were hit by a tractor trailer merging onto the interstate. The 15 yr old was not wearing her seatbelt and was ejected from the car, to make matters worse she is pregnant. (Please do not judge here because she was raped and kept the baby.) They found her in the middle of the interstate near the guardrails. My family of course is spinning this as it is a "good thing that she was not wearing the seatbelt" because what would have happened if she was wearing it, etc?

Seatbelts are a requirement as they are the law "click it or ticket" We are also very strict about carseat safety... Is your niece ok?

I wouldn't worry too much about judgment. Those who would don't matter and those who matter wouldn't. Your family is in our prayers. As for the OP, seatbelts all the time. Period.

There are some very rare examples of seatbelts actually contributing to the injury or death. But they are extremely rare. For the large majority of the time, seat belts save lives. I hope your neice and her unborn child are okay.

My husband was in a roll over accident several years ago when he swerved to miss a deer and ended upside down in a ravine type creek bed. If his seat belt had been on, he wouldn't have walked away from the wreck as the roof of the pickup was flattened to the seat backs. He ended up laying down across the seats when he realized he was going over. Seat belts are only a safety mechanism, not a guarantee, but I believe in the majority of wrecks, they either save lives or lessen injuries. If something were to happen and one of my kids or grand kids were seriously injured or killed because I didn't use all the precautions, I wouldn't be able to live with myself.

I am only guessing because I do not talk to my sister, do you remember that? But since she is pregnant I can guess that they are saying she may have lost the baby because of the impact and the restaint. When my dad was killed be a drunk driver, his injuries were caused by the seatbelt. We were told by the doctors that if he had not been wearing the seatbelt and if he had not had a heart condition he would have survived the accident. My sister was wearing her seatbelt and had minor injuries. She was in the front driving. The car was ripped apart from what my mom told me.

However, I have always insisted that everyone be securely buckled in before I go anywhere. The current design of belts would not cause the damage that would have befallen me had I been wearing a belt that friday morning.... Basicly because the belts were attached to the floor/frame and not the seat itself; had I been wearing the belt when t-boned I would have been cut in half by it.

Both of my parents have (separately) been in accidents where their lives have been saved by a seatbelt. Yes, I do believe there are cases where a lack of seatbelt *might* save a life, but I am not willing to take that minority chance. Back to the OP-- as a child on road trips we were never required by our parents to wear a seatbelt while we slept. In fact, we drove from VA to CA in a station wagon, and the three of us laid in a makeshift bed across the back (we were 10, 15, and 18). Those days are long gone, and nowadays in road trips if we sleep, we stay buckled. When I was an older teen I used to put the shoulder part behind me (so restrained at lap only) so I could lay down to sleep.
