I don't typically watch Saturday Night Live because it's just gone downhill over the last ten years or so, but I did catch it last night and it was surprisingly funny. Tina Fey does an uncanny impersonation of Sarah Palin, Michael Phelps was good-natured and not half-bad. The homeschool skit was hysterical! I even enjoyed the musical guest.

I'm in the unhip minority who has enjoyed SNL the last few years. Last night included. There are dud skits but plenty of the others keep my interest. As far as Phelps is concerned he wasn't bad but other athletes like Tom Brady, Lebron James and especially Peyton Manning were much better IMHO. That's not a knock on Phelps, he did well for a non actor. The others are team leaders and therefore have to be more charismatic.

ORIGINAL: Miss Giggles The homeschool one was funny, the opening and the michael phelps diet. My husband misunderstood the homeschooling one. He thought it was dissing homeschoolers in general. I explained that between the style of dress and the comment about social services, the homeschoolers were likely incluenced by the FLDS. My daughter thought, though, given the names all beginning with the same letter, the writers might have been thinking about the Duggars.

The homeschool one could've been taken as pretty brutal but they really bashed the public school kids just as much. The homeschool ones were just way too funny. My kids to go private school so I got to chuckle all the way around. But Tina Fey was classic last night! Of course, it was barely an impersonation. They really do look so much alike. If (WHEN) McCain wins, I think she's just going to have to come back to the show. But the thing between her and Amy Pohler (who I don't like) as Palin and Hillary, was just beyond funny! I'm thinking Tina Fey must've written that too. I agree the last several years have just been so-so (everything since Dana Carvey, IMO) but Tina Fey is fantastic.

I have not watched this show since the originals (Jane Curtin, John Belushi, Dan Akeroid, Bill Murray, Gilda Radner, et al) were on it. It started going downhill as soon as these guys left, circa 1980.

Those guys were the best, but it was pretty good in the early 90s as well. (Of course, writing and sociopolitical climate have a lot to do with it.)

IMO it was equal-opportunity-satire that had fun with both of their personalities (BTW for anyone who wants to see it, there is a link at the home page of NBC's web site).

Each set of cast has their own following to them. Back in 1982, I thought that the new cast was bad, but now I think they were among the best! The late 80's really brought on a lot of good talent too!

The best thing about SNL lately is the Tina Fey/Sarah Palin skits. But it has never gotten to the level it was back in the early days.

Yes Tina Fey was playing her at the beginning and Alec Baldwin mistook the real Sarah Palin for Tina Fey and complains to Lorne Michaels about too many Sara Pahlin skits and how bad it would be if she got elected. So then Alec goes and tell's Tina that's she really there and she runs off the stage and the real one says "Live from New York, it's Saturday Night live". They were both wearing the same suit. Funny. The clip is on hulu.com. The Suze Orman ones are hilarious too. Those are almost dead on of how she speaks and the jackets are cracking me up.

I totally missed it! I'll have to look at some of those clips. I enjoyed the Chris Rock years myself. And I was thinking about old skits I liked: * cheerleaders * that NPR show Delicious Dish where they said "good times"...Molly Shannon and Ana Gasteyer * Ana Gasteyer as Martha Stewart (remember naked Thanksgiving?) * Dog Show * Mary Katherine Gallagher * Stuart Smalley * Deep Thoughts with Jack Handy * Rosanne Rosannadanna * Church Lady * Coffee Talk * Baba Wawa * Adam Sandler singing (Opera Man, Hanukkah song, etc.) * Wayne's World * Mr. Robinson's Neighborhood * Hanz and Franz * more cowbell * down by the river * da Bears!
