Ron Paul has been nominated for the Dallas Morning News Texan of the Year. Dallas Morning News excerpts: "... no Texan this year did more good for conservatism and his country than the congressman from the coast. ....." "... What he had was ideas, integrity and authenticity. On the most critical challenges facing America, Dr. Paul was more right than the well-funded GOP regulars......" "... in a May debate aired on Fox News. Dr. Paul asserted that too much U.S. meddling in the Middle East invites terrorist blowback – a conclusion shared by the 9/11 commission and former CIA bin Laden unit chief Michael Scheuer. ...." "... he's against income taxes, period, ...." "... But the truth is, if U.S. economic policy looked a lot more like Ron Paul's ideal than what we've had these past decades, the nation wouldn't be tottering on the financial abyss. ...." "... The nationalization of the banking sector only increases the power of the central government and decreases liberty. Dr. Paul warned for years against what we're seeing happen today. But nobody – including me – listened to the old crank. How much better off would America be today if we had? We'll never know. Poor us. It's not true, really, that nobody listened. Dr. Paul had a relatively small but intensely devoted following and raised astonishing amounts of campaign cash....." "... The same GOP establishment that mocked and reviled Dr. Paul now lies shattered. Who believes in this Republican Party anymore? The party destroyed itself with its own unprincipled recklessness, both in foreign and fiscal policy. And it has ruined its reputation among the young – the most ardent of Dr. Paul's supporters, ...." "... some creative young conservatives may rise up and decide to take back the Republican Party. Perhaps they'll run against the overweening power of the federal government and in favor of decentralizing power (but unlike today's Republicans, they'll actually mean it). Maybe they'll fight for an America that lives responsibly, within its natural limits both overseas and at home. ...." "... If those ideas germinate into genuine reform and restoration of sanity in our government, America will look back on Dr. Paul as a gift from Texas and a worthy nominee as Dallas Morning News Texan of the Year. ...."

ORIGINAL: c11bar Ron Paul has been nominated for the Dallas Morning News Texan of the Year. It must have been a really tough year for Texas. Well, really it has been. We got Guv Goodhair not even waiting 72 hours to reverse his stand on the border after his almost non-reelection, still skyrocketing property taxes, a business tax that hits the small businesses especially hard, Kay Bailey or Bill White to take Goodhair's place, a slump in the energy market (I know, that hits Houston more than the rest of the state), and a state legislature that still only meets every other year as if they still ride horseback to get to Austin! So we really do need all the laughs we can get. Thanks Dallas Morning News!

I'd say Ron Paul is a pretty good man with a lot of really good ideas. I would have voted for him in the primaries if I had been home for it. The fact that many Republicans ridicule his stances on so many important issues saddens me for the future of this late, great US.

Y'all seem to forget the fact that Dr. Paul stuffs the pork in the bills that are GOING to pass and then can sit back and vote "no" on them, and then try to tout that as being "conservative" and "Constitutional". He's a banal POLITICIAN, just as well versed (if not more so) in pulling the wool over your eyes as all the rest of them who y'all deride.

I have problems with two things in the thread title: "Ron Paul" and the "Texan of the Year" from the Dallas Morning News. First of all the "Texan of the Year" from the DMN lost any credibility it had when they chose the illegal alien as the Texan of the year. That's right, Texans must be so disgusting and horrible that a native-born Texan couldn't win so they had to choose criminals who break the law to get here to become Texan of the year. quote:
2007 DMN Texan of the Year: The Illegal Immigrant He breaks the law by his very presence. He hustles to do hard work many Americans won't, at least not at the low wages he accepts. The American consumer economy depends on him. America as we have known it for generations may not survive him. We can't seem to live with him and his family, and if we can live without him, nobody's figured out how. He's the Illegal Immigrant, and he's the 2007 Dallas Morning News Texan of the Year – for better or for worse. DMN LINK As for Ron Paul, not only did he say that 9/11 happened BECAUSE WE BOMBED IRAQ FIRST, but also stated that there might be government coverups in 9/11. That's right amigos, Ron Paul is a truther... but later denied it. quote:
Giuliani to Paul: 'Take back' 9/11 comments Why did terrorists attack the U.S. on 9/11? According to Texas Congressman Ron Paul, "They attack us because we've been over there. We've been bombing Iraq for 10 years. We've been in the Middle East." Restrained, but clearly angry, former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani jumped in, calling Paul's statement "extraordinary." "As someone who lived through the attack of September 11 -- that we invited the attack because we were attacking Iraq -- I don't think I've ever heard that before, and I've heard some pretty absurd explanations for September 11th," he said. Iraq Bombing LINK quote:
Student: …we’ve heard that you have questioned the government’s official account. Paul: Well, I never automatically trust anything the government does when they do an investigation because too often I think there’s an area that the government covered up, whether it’s the Kennedy assassination or whatever. --- The investigation was an investigation in which there were government cover-ups 9/11 Truther video LINK

Ron Paul is a libertarian not a republican. What he is or isn't labeled is immaterial. His stands on domestic policy and constitutionalism are the best in the business. I don't recognize the Republican party anymore, so I may as well leave too. In fact, seeing as how my state has virtually never taken a hand in deciding the nominee, I actually do plan on re-registering as a Libertarian.
