Am I alone? Does anybody else have trouble retaining things from the bible? I remember most things.. The verses that we all know, but sometimes I can read something and 15 minutes later not remember anything. I want to know the word more. the OT stuff is hard for me to get into. I posted another thread about getting the bible on cd. I bought that hoping it would get me through the entire OT. Even listening to some of that stuff is hard.

Welcome to the forums. You might want to try a "Walk thru the Bible" to give you an overview. there are many bible studies available that will help you understand better the various books of the bible. they each have lots in them - more than anyone can ge from just a reading. thats why some folks study it so hard. its easier (in my opinion) to take it in smaller pieces and with other believers if possible. I still forget much of what i read, but the more often i do it, the easier it is to remember... at least in my own words - what it says.

One of the best ways of 'retaining the Word'(anything for that matter)is to make it part of your experience by looking for application for it's use. Granted, you won't see some application in your life experience every moment, every verse but over time and study you'll see threads. One suggestion: Read your bible(follow) the CD's voice in unison or read the text, aloud.

I would say memorization of the Word might help you out. Also, just maybe reading the same scriptures more than once and thinking on them and applying them...

Joining the discussion is helpful. It is easier to sit on the sidelines and watch the sparks fly. However, watching a sporting event, if you will excuse the analogy, rarely strengthens one as much as taking an active role in it.

Be encouraged... you're not going to remember everything all the time. You may not remember something 15 minutes later (I have the same problem) but a year from now, those verses may come back to you. It's important to continue studying; and vary your study from time to time. Go back and review your study from time to time to refresh your memory and don't get discouraged if you're still not satisfied with your level of memory. Just do your part of study, and the Lord will bring to mind the things you need when you need them.

what i find frustrating is i will read, sometimes just a verse, other times more, and most times i go round and round trying to hear the meaning in my mind trying to understand what i just read to know how it is suppose to affect my life, mostly i just want so much to close my bible and be able to come away with a sense of oh so thats what Jesus means, or oh now i see.... So there i sit reading and reading, then i will go to church and all it takes is the Pastor or someone else to talk about a verse and then there is meaning, i guess i have trouble with the wording maybe. Recently someone from here on these boards suggested i purchase another bible having more than one giving me different translations of the word, and to meditate more on what i read, though it is hard to meditate on something when you feel you aren't really grasping it. So i do have my melancholy moods feeling less that adequate in my reading.

It is possible to overthink things. Sometimes a passage does not apply at the moment. Sometimes it is best to read the Scriptures as one would read literature. One may not understand the meaning of the candle beside the book on the corner table in an Agetha Christy novel, but later as the story unfolds it all becomes clear. Also, some things do not become clear until the end. I think this is how it is with life. As we go over the same Scriptures year after year, we don't always understand every passage. However, as our lives progress, those passages come back to us at just the right time.

John 14:26 But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all things that I said to you. The Holy Spirit will bring relevant things to your remembrance at times when they are needful so I would not be too concerned that you are finding it hard to remember what you read or heard shortly before. Just remain faithful in God's Word and read it regularly (someone already mentioned a good study guide alongside your Bible to help because it is interesting to know that it is also easier to remember things we understand) and God will do the rest regarding what you have posted in your OP.

I went to my local used book store and got a study guide to help me along with my Bible to be able to retain the Word. My money was tight, I traded in books, got enough credit to get the study guide & just pay the tax on it. I have 3 scriptures I retain in my heart but I enjoy the meaning of what's in a chapter of the Bible by using my study giude also. Don't let it disappoint you that you cannot retain the Word, that's why God wants us to use our Bibles I think, so we'll come back over and over. Besides, it's an enjoyable experience to get into the Word. Connie Lou

Never open The Book without first asking the Holy Spirit to give you understanding, recollection, and knowledge as you feed on His word. I would also recommend not to be all over the place in the Bible until you have read through a few times. Another thing that will hinder our memory of the Word is to not be in it on a daily basis. Just as it's not physically healthy ( aside from certain fasts) to go without eating going without feeding on His word is not spiritually healthy either. Some have said they recollect better reading the Word out loud. Something worth trying. " Your word I have hidden in my heart, that I might sin against you. Psalm 119:11

Hey Crisb, Dont worry, you are definately not alone in this area. Dont get discouraged! I think someone else here said, you might be surprised by the things you might remember even several months after having read it! There are several things you can try to hel yourself remember though. The one thing I have found most helpful is taking notes as I study. I always open with prayer, get my heart right, and then ask God to help bring His word alive to me and help me understand all that He wants me to see in it. For the Old Testament especially, it's also helpful to get a brief background of the history or get a Study Bible with notes to help you see the big picture. I also have trouble with some books in the Old Testament. The best way to get through the harder books is to take in 1-2 chapters at a time and then switch to the New Testament.

It has been my experience, that if you truly have the desire in your heart to know the truths that are hidden in the Word of God, the Holy Spirit will cause the words that you read to go into your heart. You may not always remember everything in your mind that you read. But when you need that word the Holy Spirit will bring it to your rememberance. Read John 14:26. Jesus is the living Word. Also read Psalm 119:11.

I think that you should rememebr that Satan doesn't want you to learn God's Word. You must take steps to make sure you are spiritually ready to recieve his word. Here are my suggestions. 1. fast) devote yourself totally to God before you approach the Bible. This type of fast maybe food. But more specifically turn off the noise pollution.(cell phones, radios, TV, internet etc. take away all interuptions. 2. worship and pray. focus time worshiping God will have you interacting with Godand God will get you attention. Grab a church hymnal and take it home with you so you can pick a song that will help. 3. read the passage thruogh once then right out questions. Read it again and answer your questions. 4. Specifically pray that God would keep these words to memory For specific verses. 1. use the KJV. a. too many versions cause confusion. b. the KJV is poetic making it easier on memory c. the KJV is accurate and easy to obtain repetition read there verse 10-15 times in the morning and ten or fifteen times at night every night for a full week. do these things and you will be remembering the Bible in no time! check out my web blog www.biblesmack.blogspot.com and my internetradioshow www.blogtalkradio.com/Bible-Smack-Radio

It is my considered opinion that memeorizing specific verses in specific interpretations often leaves on open to erronious indoctrination. One does not necessarily lead to the other, but it appears to me to often be the case. I think it best just to read and discuss the Scriptures in there entirety again and agian. Then over time Adonai's Spirit will make them clear to you and will bring them to mind at the appropriate time.
