Hi all,
How are you utilizing this year's presidential elections in your studies?
How do you explain party differences? How do you compare and contrast Republicans and Democrates? This is something that I am unsure how to present. The websites I have researched always seem to have a bias to one party or the other.
Any ideas? Are you doing anything special on the night of the elections?

Meanwhile, "what happens in MY house is more important than what happens in the WHITE house. You see, God is a work right here, right now, under this roof, to transform the future. As we raise our kids to think God's thoughts after Him, eventually we'll have political choices beyond stupid vs. evil.

That works for me, but…
It works better as a dinner table discussion and not as something I'd want to have to defend as official curriculum.
For high school kids, there are the Cow Political Metaphors. Wikipedia offers these examples:
Socialism: You have two cows. The government takes one and gives it to someone else. You form a cooperative to tell him how to manage his cow.
Communism: You have two cows. The government takes both of them and evenly distributes the milk. You wait in line for hours to get it. It is expensive and sour.
Capitalism: You have two cows. You sell one, buy a bull, and build a herd.
I won't post any links to 'cow politics' because the best examples that I found for Democrat and Republican have other PG-13 stuff on the same page, but you all know how to use a search function if you are really curious. They are somewhat amoozing.

When my kids were in the middle grades, we focused on issues, not on political parties. By the time they were in high school, they were cogent enough to connect issues to party platforms. It is OK to be biased about issues; God certainly is.

How do you compare and contrast Republicans and Democrates?
Most people teach from a curriculum that carries its own bias or limitations. We teach that Satan runs this world for now (insofar as God allows him). When you see a political party you see a collection of special interest groups who feel that their association is worth the price they pay to get what they want.
Politics can be best observed by studying the history of the "polis" Greek city state and see how Satan introduced the concept of democracy. Reading Machiavelli or the Art of War also is a good introduction how people can effectively get what they want.
The key to politics is "getting what you want". Satan has been at this for years (You shall be like gods). Kings and rulers have been able to get most of what they want by edict. However, to be able to corrupt the largest number of people Satan introduced democracy and the corrosive and corrupting influence of compromise and political machination to draw as many people as possible into the arena of striving to get what they want.
One of the first assessments of democracy came from Alexis de Tocqueville in a book Democracy in America. He speculated that democracy would only last as long as it took people to figure out they could vote themselves the money. I don't think he appreciated how long the extremely clever use of debt could keep things going.
Our society is a homogenized collective largely through the efforts of public education. Satan has accomplished many things using this most effective tool. but the most tragic is the establishment of a system for indoctrinating youth where the name of Jesus is forbidden to be mentioned. As a result, each generation is more and more turned from faith in Christ to faith in the religion of secularism (the worship of man in general and self in particular). As more and more people become detached from He who is truth, they become more and more vulnerable to the deceptions of Satan.
As political parties vie for the right to loot the treasury, they have to sell themselves to a public that is less and less able to respond to truth. The political party that lies the best gets the money.
Rather than a "knee jerk" reaction that communism is bad and thus capitalism is good, one might consider that capitalism is not the same thing as free enterprise and that a corporation is an economic collective that has more legal rights than an individual. This disappearance of small business is due in part to the ability of corporations to grow in size until they can wield the political power to crush competition.
As our nation turns increasingly from Jesus, we will find historical parallels for our collapse. We will see the increased Potemkin villages of wind turbines and ethanol plants, we will see taxation and legislation used to fix "wrongs" that end up bankrupting and enslaving us, there will be a flood of illegal immigrants coming to find the "good" life only to find that they have left the frying pan and found the fire.
The anti-christ will be welcomed as were the tyrants of old. Just as Beethoven was enthusiastic about Napoleon as the new man of the enlightenment, everyone will welcome the man who will "fix" what we have done to ourselves.
Republican or democrat does not matter. Satan wants us walking by faith in what we can achieve and not walking by trusting in our Lord. We try to teach our children that voting for the lessor of two evils is still voting for evil. If you cannot in good conscience vote for a candidate, don't vote. It is not for us to control the world, it is up to us to be faithful to our Lord.

Focusing on issues is the best way to do it. You can go down issue by issue - abortion, energy independence, . . .
There are some philosophical difference as well. In general, liberals believe that government has the solutions. Thus, any problem that presents itself they propose a government rule or bureaucracy. In general, conservatives believe that government can more often be a hindrance and try to effect change a different way (thus they may seem "cold hearted" but private charity works better than government welfare).

Or, like Augustine, we could view the collapse of the (his Roman, our secular humanist American) civilization as the opportunity for the resurgence of a Christian social order. We could teach our children to eagerly anticipate the day when the states on this continent formally pledge allegiance to the Lord Jesus Christ. We could teach them to avoid the mistake we made in 1789 of bowing before a new god, "we the people," i.e. -- we the bankers and lawyers.
Ages have ended before. When a powerful empire turns hollow and collapse, those who keep their heads and know where they're going can have incredible influence. Since this is the home schooling forum, I'll ask -- how do we prepare our bouncy offspring to see and seize opportunity, where the worldlings see only catastrophe?
