All I can say is that it's more (how ironic) preaching to the choir!

I was prepared to at least look at it and see what Maher was saying about religion, until I found out it was directed by the same guy that directed Borat. For me, that removes it from anything to be taken seriously. I also now know that the movie features some extremism that I'm sure is aimed at making religious people look stupid. To me, that just makes the filmmakers look stupid. Some will take it seriously, of course, but there's nothing to be done about them. I hope more people than not will see it for what it is.

It's a propaganda piece just like FACING THE GIANTS or FIREPROOF, but we have our boxers in a bunch because we don't agree with what is being said.

I may not like what they say, but they have complete freedom to do it...I hope it makes them a lot of money, because as Scripture says, assuredly, they have their reward....

tafkam,

You do realize that propaganda has the connotation of lying and of doing harm. Is that really the word you want to attach to a film like Facing the Giants or Fireproof?

BTW, has anyone questioned the freedom of the Religulous producers to make this film? I haven't heard that anywhere. It's not an issue at all, so why make it one?

Yes, I've heard of it and seen some clips from it. And from what I know of Bill Maher, not one cell in my body is surprised by this.

In the days prior to the ratings system, a self-governed production code controled the content of movies. One of the big no-nos was a denigration of faith. But in these days the market is what needs to control the content.

Yes. Read my comments in the thread on FIREPROOF and you'll get my meaning...

Has anyone actually bothered to see this film before condemning it? I saw it yesterday, and found it to be very clever.

Yes blasphemy can be creative and clever.

Jesus says to Maher, "What if you're wrong?"
Maher:"What if YOU'RE wrong?"

Maher better be guarding his backside.

In the end, pay for what you want to see more of, avoid what you want to see less of. Your money talks.

I do not agree that freedom of speech should be extended to art, but that is not for me to say. So, for the time being they are free to make whatever movie they want (if they can get the funding for it), my right to free speech allows me to criticize what I do see (if I don't like it), to avoid those I don't want to see and to give my approval (in the form of patronage) and good reviews and recommendations to those I approve of.

Religulous is one I have known was coming for quite a while (I work in the corporate office of a large theatre chain), and I decided from the first time I head of it, not to see it.

Regardless of the quality of Christian and Conservative themed movies if you want to see more of these movies (and you want to see them done in higher quality) you have to go see them when you are given the chance.

You may think your statement is "I don't want to see low quality movies", but it is heard as "I don't want to see this Christian/Conservative movie"

On what basis do you make the claim that freedom of speech should not be extended to art?

And according to you, exactly what art would be allowed freedom of expression? And why?

Um, that wasn't Jesus that Maher was speaking to - it was an actor. Plus, you likely got the line you quoted from the trailer.

Did you see the actual film?

I'll just say that I will be watching Religulous--before viewing An American Carol (just so I can indulge in some fair and balanced, bipartisan film viewing), which by the way, I've read that the former is outperforming Maher's/Charles' movie in regards to ticket sales (though some folks at Variety would probably spin Religulous' lack of popular box office appeal by saying it's still a hit with the "specialty" film markets, which to me sounds very Orwellian in secular/atheist newspeak!

Did I mention the hypocritical/double standards of film reviewing by the Grey Lady who fallen, but can't get up--best known as The New York Times?

Maybe I should jumpstart a stand alone thread concerning the "perfect" timing between Maher's and (David) Zucker's comedic/polar movies--and the societal contrasts regarding how the elites see them... literally!

I plan to see this film. I've actually been a Bill Maher hater for a long time, until recently.

Seeing his interview on The Daily Show with John Stewart really opened my eyes to what is going on. He said he is not an atheist, he just doesn't know what to believe. That tells me he is desperate to find something to believe in. Strip away all the sarcasm and anti-religious venom and you have what we all are; poor lost souls in need of a Savior.

Before we all condemn him to hell, maybe we should take a closer look at his plight and pray for him. If ever there was a soul in need of rescue his would be the one.

I plan on seeing it when I get around to it. I always try to see movies that have controversy associated with it so I can see what it is all about and when there are discussions, I can actually know what I am talking about and not relying on hearsay.

Actually, Religulous is outperforming An American Carol.

An American Carol was only one up on the chart. The difference being $200,000. Religulous is only on 502 screens, while An American Carol is on 1,639.

I have not seen the movie nor do I intend to see it as I have heard enough about it to convince me not to waste money on it. I put Maher and his movie in the same category as "The Last Temptation of Christ," "Farenheit 911","Brokeback Mountain." The people who make these movies use themes they know will stir contraversy. After the release of the movie, they sit back, rake in the money and watch people argue, defend or whatever else their movie. At that point, they don't care what is said because they are now enjoying the benefits of their work and being entertained themselves by watching others react. A lot of them present Christianity in a negative way that does not glorify God or Christ but humanizes them. God can't be pleased with this form of "entertainment."
