I will be teaching some 5th and 6th graders this Wednesday at a children's ministry on the subject of reflecting God's holiness. Can you think of some specific examples of how 5th and 6th graders can reflect God's holiness? I'm looking for examples that would be appropriate for children.

Holiness is by definition being different. You might begin in Isaiah chapter 1 and show them how Adonai shows he is different. He is not just different, but different from the different. Also, not just that, but different from that which is different from the different. "Holy, Holy, Holy" So, if you sometimes feel different when you choose to do what Adonai tells you to do, you have some idea of what it means to reflect Adonai's holiness.

You can start to describe God's holiness from the beginning: the mighty God created the world we live in.

quote:

Genesis 1:1: "In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth. And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters. And God said, Let there be light: and there was light...."

The creation was followed by God by monitoring the events on earth, correcting for time to time the mistakes of mankind, bringing light to mankind, battling evil. God is mighty, God is Holy.

Hm... You could tell them to be different from the kids around them at school (unless you're like my old church, where 50% of your kids are home schooled. Then you could tell them to be different from the kids around them wherever they are). If the kids they know swear, then don't swear. If they kids they know dress a certain way (i.e., indecently), they can set an example by dressing modestly. If the kids around them are always gossiping or making fun, they can refrain from joining in, and even make a stand for those being mocked.

Also, a kinda fun, and maybe cliche, example you could use is the moon. The moon gives light to the world by reflecting the sun. We should give light to the world by reflecting the Son. Be the moon. : )

I would like to thank you for your input. Part of reflecting God's holiness is honoring one's parents. Can you give some examples of how children can honor their parents besides obeying them?

Even if one can not obey one's parents, one can not criticize them publically or allow others to do so. If one differs from one's parents on should discuss such things privately and encourage others to discuss their differences face to face in private also.

This is the key word IMO. REFLECT To give back an image of. So talk about reflect. What it is. What they know about reflections. Use a mirror to illustrate.

We reflect what we hold the mirror up to. You can demonstrate that, play with that, to get them thinking about 'reflection'.

Then turn to the topic.

How do you get a reflection of God's holiness?

How do you hold a mirror up to God and then reflect that to others?

What is necessary for you to reflect Jesus to others?

Talk about the new birth, His life in you.

Just my thoughts and suggestions.

I would emphasize their attitude in obeying. It's one thing to say, "Ooooh, OK, I really don't want to, but I'll do what you say," and entirely another to say "Yes ma'am/sir, right away," and really mean it.

It might be dangerous to encourage unquestioning obedience. What if a parent were to ask a child to steal, knowing that a minor will receive a lesser sentence of caught. It might be best to teach children to respectfully inquire of ones parent at an appropriate time. Thus, they are honoring their parents by encouraging them to follow the Shema(Duet 6).
