ORIGINAL: todd_t The following is pretty depressing...be warned... http://www.cnn.com/2008/WORLD/asiapcf/08/07/afghan.family/index.html Beyond words. And it is happening in many other countries.

True, especially central Africa which has been torn apart by inter-tribal warfare for decades. What's most tragic, however, is that were it not for stories like these, they would largely go on unseen by the world community.

The UN is chiefly a diplomatic organization, not a military one. They are not world policemen.

Is the UN often mired in its own bureaucracy? Yes, but it does provide a lot of humanitarian aid (food, medical supplies, clothing, shelter, basic education) to people around the world - most recently (on a mass scale) to victims of the Burmese typhoon. It also participates in hundreds of other aid efforts. By the way, how is helping others "useless"? Doing so strikes me as something that Jesus would endorse. Or are you so consumed by your irrational hatred for the UN that you can't recognize that? quote:
So what do you propose to stop the situation? Get the Afghan government back on its feet, which is no small task considering it is very poor, has an unstable central government, and been mired in war since 1980 when the Soviets invaded, and the Taliban took over after they left. Either way, establishing a sense of peace to Afghanistan is very difficult considering its people haven't seen it in almost 30 years. But blaming the UN for what's happened in Afghanistan is as absurd as blaming the Boy Scouts for the Holocaust.

So what do you propose to stop the situation? The UN peacekeepers aren't so idle as you might think. Not only do they not stop rape, they sometimes are the rapists. There were many accounts of rape coming out of the Congo a few years back. This year they were accused of rape, including small children, in "several" countries. We're here to help you (lose your virginity)

I also read this story; it's horrendous. The persons responsible should be tried and jailed. Yet you know as well as I do that the assaults on kids in Afghanistan are being committed by different parties.
