Hi:

I was thinking of suggesting to our pastor that perhaps, on a Sunday night, that he takes questions from the church members. However, is this ok to do? I see that John Macarthur has taken a lot of questions from church members, but, is it possible that many pastors are simply not "scholarly" trained to answer a diversity of Bible questions? I would not want to put the pastor on the spot...but...sometimes, based on the topical messages that are given, I wonder if the pastor is prepared to answer involved Bible/doctrinal etc. type questions...

What do you think?

I think it's a great idea. Most pastors love answering questions aren't aren't worried about being put on the spot. If they don't know the answer, they are pretty good at answering it as best they can and then doing some more research on the matter, but I don't think I've ever asked a pastor a question they didn't have an answer to.

If I were to think of reasons not to do it, it would be issues of practicality. It might work for some and not work for others just because of their unique situation. For example, some pastors have congregations that just won't ask questions, and they find it very uncomfortable to open up the floor if no one is going to participate. On the other hand, some have too many questions, and need to find a way to control the flow of questions and keep things on track. There may also be other issues to consider. For example, my husband will take questions in Bible study but not in church, because my husband is hard of hearing. Also, there are some people out there who will take the floor and never give it back.

So it's just one of those things that's a great idea if you can find a way to make it work for your situation. I'd definitely suggest it to your pastor, but don't be offended if he doesn't think it's a good fit for your church, either.

Our mid week Bible study questions are welcome and expected.

Sunday Sermon's would not be.

I do get asked questions about anything and everything, some people call me, one lady handed me a list once. Contact your Pastor, don't be afraid to talk to him.

Do you not have a Bible study you attend that invites questions?

I really do not think that "Scholary" is the deterrent, I think it is concern about handling the situations (confidence).

I take questions and comments during and after each of my sermons, and I miss scholary by a mile and a half.

I instruct my folks that during the teachings (sermons), that if anyone has something to ask or comment to please raise thier hand, and when I get to an appropriate stopping point; I let them speak. Also at the end I ask if there are any questions or comments. I do this in accordance with;

(1Co 14:29) Let the prophets speak two or three, and let the other judge.

(1Co 14:30) If any thing be revealed to another that sitteth by, let the first hold his peace.

(1Co 14:31) For ye may all prophesy one by one, that all may learn, and all may be comforted.

This does put quite a load on the Pastor to keep it orderly, to stop someone who is in error, and explain where they are in error; if someone starts talking about the color of the carpet or some such nonsense, to stop them and tell them to bring the issue to a business meeting, and to gently get folks to limit thier talk when they do not know when to quit.

For all the confusion that it would seem to bring; it does not, the questions and comments are few, but helpful to all. It really helps me to be sure that everyone understands the message that I am bringing.

I have done this every since I started in the ministry nearly 47 years ago, and to congregations from 20 to 2000. It is God's plan and it works and keeping with;

(1Co 14:40) Let all things be done decently and in order.

Thanks
RC

My pastor periodically opens the floor to questions on various topic on Sunday evenings. At other times on Sunday evenings he'll make an open ended statement and allow people in the congregation to complete it (like: "I love to worship because..."
