I was watching a deal on Elvis about his Gospel roots, and it showed the Stamps backing him. I thought I saw Richard Sterban, and after looking it up on SGhistory, sure enough it was. My question is why would a group have 2 bass singers? Did JD have voice problems back then, or what was the deal??
thanks,

In the early 1970s, JD hired Richard Sterban to sing bass for the Stamps so he could devote time to his other endeavors.

He was proud of this version of the Stamps, for although they were "JD's group", in the event that JD couldn't make a concert, they could do a great concert without him.

I saw them do a great two hour concert without JD. Although JD was missed, they were one of the finest quartets in gospel music without their famed leader.

After Richard left the Stamps to join the Oaks, JD hired several other bass singers including Ed Wideman, Larry Strickland, and Tommy Thompson.

We need to get Ed Hill to chat in this thread. He could tell some great stories about The Stamps Qt...though I think he came on the scene a little later.

I have a Stamps album called "The Touch of His Hand" circa 1970. I don't think JD is on it, though. Could be wrong. My favorite song on that album is "In The Arms of Sweet Deliverance".

Thanks for that explanation. I have wondered about that myself a time or two.

Great Stamps album! JD is doing very little if any singing on the album, but he does two outstanding narrations.
