What does it mean to be conservative? I have never actually been told even though I have been bombarded with insinuations.

In short, I believe a political conservative believes this: the less government, the better, and the stronger locally, the better.
In a nutshell, IMHO.

Well......... the typical Conservative Mantra would go something like this...
"Lower taxes; more localized and limited government; strong national defense; more national sovereignty"
The current crop of conservatives seems to be more along the lines of...
"Whatever you say; I guess so; maybe we can work together on this; bi-partisan globalization strategy!"

Oh, and to make clear, this is not the same as being a SOCIAL conservative which includes things such as being "anti-same-sex marriage" and "pro-life"

I remember being taught in seventh grade that conservative meant not wanting to change anything unless it was absolutely necessary. It was only after I was grown that I learned that that is such an inadequate definition that I've never heard any actual conservative use it or anything like it.

Those definitions sound very much like my 7th grade teacher's. But political conservatives believe in a very specific set of ideals, and if the status quo doesn't go along with them, a conservative isn't at all slow to want to change it! Sure, the word itself means not wanting change, but that definition doesn't seem to apply to politics.

Conservatism generally means believing in core tenets and sticking with them. As for political aspects, a conservative believes in literanl translation of the consititution. Liberals tend to read meaning into it and add their own deals.
Conservatives shun government involvement and what they consider to be handouts. Thus, health care is not something the government should do.
You even have conservative and liberal Christians. Conservatives believe the literal truth of the bible. For example, they believe that Jesus Christ is the only way to God. Liberals tend to shy away from that and may even embrace other ways to God. The most liberal are the Unitarians who essentially don't believe in anything. One can believe anything and be a Unitarian.

To be conservative would to be a conserver of traditions right or wrong. However, I believe Christians should defy classifications by being all things to all people for the Spirit of God in us is by all means all too dynamic to be limited to the finite definations of mens understanding of words. Am I a conservative? Yes. Am I not a conservative? Yes.

I heard a very wise man describe the difference between "conservative and liberal" this way.
A conservative is someone who says, "I believe that you have the ability to accomplish anything you want. Let me show you".
A liberal is someone who says, "I don't believe you're smart enough to do it on your own so let the government do it for you."

There's a lot of ambiguity in the definitions of modern "conservatives" and "liberals." "Conservatives" are conservative/traditional/restrictive on some things, while liberal or permissive on others. The same can be said for "Liberals."
For example, "conservatives" tend to be conservative or restrictive on issues involving personal legal liberties of a sinful nature: e.g. homosexual marriage, prostitution, marijuana. On the other hand, they have a tendency to overlook sins committed by corporations, particularly in areas concerning workers rights and the environment. "Liberals" tend to swing the opposite direction on these issues.

Conservative - derives from the French word conserve. Meaning jam - I think in the US you call it jelly.
So a Conservative is someone who makes jam/jelly.
I like ginger marmalade - it's like jam, really !!!
