The mouse on my laptop stopped working a few weeks ago. I had been getting around that by using the toshiba pad thing located under the computer keys(I cannot for the life of me remember what that is called ... it's a square where you move the curser by moving your finger over the square) ... but now that too has stopped working. Do I need to start from scratch (putting the cd that came with it in case of a crash ... which will result in losing all my work)? Or do I need to get a new computer? I have tried another mouse that works from a friends computer to see if the mouse itself was the issue ... but that will not work either. Please advise, and thank you in advance.

How old is the computer? I wouldn't suggest a new computer. you can always get a USB travel mouse. about 40 bucks, and the USB/Bluetooth adapter normally fits right into the mouse so it won't get lost. so that and batteries you spend 50 bucks at the most and you don't need a new computer.

A new mouse isn't going to help if the USB controller is what is failing (it's possible that the trackpad connects internally over USB). Do any USB devices work on your laptop? If you open the Device Manager (you'll find it in the Control Panel) are there any errors listed? If other USB devices work, and the Device Manager doesn't list any problems, try re-installing the mouse/touchpad drivers. You should be able to find drivers at your laptop manufacturer's site, or the mouse maker's site.

Hi Psalms, did Pez's suggestions help or do you need some clarifications? It would be helpful to have your laptop's model number(s), and the version of Windows on it (Windows 95, 98, 98SE, Millenium, XP, 2000, Vista). If you have no mouse control though, you'll probably need to find a techy friend who can control the laptop solely via the keyboard to even look around or try System Restore, or someone who can boot it from an operating system on a CD, such as the free Windows Ultimate Boot CD, or maybe linux with USB drivers.
