I have an unfinished basement and I was thinking about painting the walls white to brighten it up and make it look cleaner. I don't have a lot of money to spend on it, and I thought paint would be the cheapest way to make it look better.

The walls are poured concrete, and it was built eleven years ago so it is fully cured. The basement is dry, no problem with moisture on the walls.

From what I have read, I need to wash the walls with TSP, put a sealer on them, put primer on them, and then paint them. Does anyone know of anything else I should do, or if some of this is not necessary.

Any tips from anyone who has done this before would be appreciated.
Thanks!

No idea what you need to do, but you might want to consider using an off-white or yellow instead of pure white when you paint the walls. Yellow will actually brighten the room more than plain white.

That sounds about right.

I also think they make special paint for concrete, but if you prepare the surface well enough you can probably use regular paint.

creationtalk, I really like yellow but I thought white would make it brighter by reflecting more light. I guess any light color would work okay though.

I was wondering if I really needed to use a sealer and primer both, since the walls are old and fully cured. Some websites I looked at didn't mention using a sealer and others did.

Thanks for the replies!

That sounds like alot. I just went to walmart and bought the paint for basement walls. I painted them and not only did they look great, but it was a waterproofing paint and it went on pretty easy. The paint is really thick and it goes a long way, but it worked and it wasn't a huge deal or really expensive.

MrsTracy, that does sound a lot easier. I will have to wash the walls because they are a little dusty. I use wood heat in the basement and it is kind of dirty. Did your walls ever have a sealer put on them before you painted them? How many coats of paint did you use? I am all for less work, less time, and less expense for this project!

The paint that I bought is like a sealer. It is called basement waterproofing paint I think. It comes in white or grey and I just did one coat because it is really thick. I used a brush to put it on, but hubby preferred the roller. It also filled in hairline cracks. It worked really good.

There is special paint for concrete, as long as it's clean of mud, priming is not necessary. Use it all of the time for garages, looks great. Not any more expensive than a good quality exterior paint, and comes in just about any color you could imagine. Just visit your local paint store before trying to use some "left over" paint for the project.

Thanks, APZR. I guess I will wash the walls with the TSP and then use the concrete paint. Is there a particular brand that is better than the others? We have a Sherwin Williams store, Ace Hardware, and a Home Depot here, and could drive to Wal-Mart if necessary.

I just used the brand that Walmart sold and we had no problems with it.

White reflects more light (slightly) if that is your only concern, but yellow or other warm spectrum bright colors will make the room more inviting. Pure white can seem very cold. Think the difference between a winter day and a fall or spring day. The snow bound winter day might be brighter, with the light reflecting off the snow, but you are much less likely to want to sit in it and relax. Other options are to paint the room mostly white, but have sections that are covered with bright colors. Example, in one room with all white walls, we hung a multicolored woven blanket (orange, yellow, brown, red, green plaid) in the middle of the wall and an outdoor scene picture in the middle. It changed the entire feel of the room.

The builder thought I was insane when I insisted on painting half the walls in the interior bathroom (no windows) bright yellow...until he saw the finished product.

I have enough cases of 18" floor tile to cover the whole basement (it was given to me), but it is a medium brown marbled with light brown and ivory. I wonder if yellow walls would look okay with that. It's not the color I would have chosen for the floor if I had a choice, but I hate to not use it since it was free, and it's not really a bad color, just a little dark. I did notice yesterday that our pastor was wearing a brown suit with a yellow shirt and that looked nice together. I suppose I could take a tile to the store to match it with the paint. If yellow doesn't look so good, maybe a light beige or ivory would work.

Thanks for all the suggestions!

You should be able to use the concrete paint and if they can't tint it for you, I would think going over it with a regular room paint (probably the kids room stuff because it holds up to abuse better) would be ok.

Sherwin Williams and Duron are my favorites. Although Sherwin now owns Duron, their paint formulas are still unique.
