ORIGINAL: deliveredarling What can you tell me about it? Does scripture support the idea of the enemy spiritually oppressing people? Why does it happen? How long does it last? Can we do anything to speed the process of getting through it? Once recognized, what do you then do, other than pray? Hi Deliverdarling~ Yes oppression can come from God. In the book of I Samuel King Saul disobeyed God's command where Samuel the prophet ended up slaying the king from the country they had just overcome. Because of his disobedience, God allowed a spirit to bother him, but instead of seeking repentance, he allowed the spirit to affect him which eventually destroyed him. (He committed suicide during a battle, He dropped himself on his own sword.) A person can pray and the number one thing to during this is to put on the Armour of God (Ephesians 6) have others pray for them. If it is due to a person who put another in oppression, then I would suggest forgiving that person as well as yourself. I believe if we believe the words of man, then at some point we didn't trust God during that time, jmho. Hope this helps CMT

ORIGINAL: deliveredarling What can you tell me about it? Does scripture support the idea of the enemy spiritually oppressing people?Example: Paul was buffeted by a messenger of satan, and the Lord did not remove it from him immediately, but instead we see that the Lord instead required of Paul patience and trust in God and in His grace. I have looked it up and the oppression that I see is from man attacking man. OTOH, we have Job, who was tormented by the enemy with the permission from God. Why does it happen? I believe it happens at times in God's plans for us, to cause us to be less "self" sufficient, and more GOD DEPENDENT, which is by definition a walk of faith. How long does it last? LOL, as long as it takes for us to learn the lesson Can we do anything to speed the process of getting through it?Spend time in prayer Once recognized, what do you then do, other than pray?PRAY and trust God, trust that He is fully aware of our situation, and trust that no matter how long it takes to be delivered, He is with us in it, and will lead us out of it. Thanks in advance for your input. Bob~

If someone is being oppressed, all they can do is pray for deliverance. However, God decides the time when he will deliver that person from the oppression.

I was very oppressed in the house I lived for the past 10 or so years. I can tell you what oppression is. it is one person (man woman, makes no differance) hindering, judging, stopping the natural God given freedom of another human being. Like, it is them imposing thier will on another, and it doesnt have to mean that they are saying do this do that, it can simply be not letting someone (the oppressed) be themself, do what they would normally do, think what they would think. I know this sounds hard to undertsand, probably... butit is like, saying you are wrong for being alive. its opression... not depression, not repression, but opression, like opposition that uses thier power in an evil way to control and manipulate and exercise thier will over another. I was in a house where that happened a lot. I hated it, I hated that person... I am being honest. I have forgiven them, they never changed, and now I know it is not MY job to forgive them anymore. We all answer to GOD. Oppression is a very bad thing... and I have learned FROM being in such a place, that freedom is a BLESSING no one should take for granted... and we should never impose our will on someone else. The Bible says that "where the Spirit of the LORDis there is liberty".... and later it does also say that we should not use our liberty to do what we want... but to serve the Lord. and I agree. I did go through a deliverance. I also moved out of that hellish place. I am soooooooooooooooo thankful to be where I am right now. I think the root of oppression from people for one, not trusting in the forgiveness of JEsus Christ for thier lives. Like, not believeing that they deserve it .. or also disobeidence to God's will... the situation I was in was where there were people that were angry all the time, unhappy, judgmental, unforgiving controlling and hateful. prejudice, sexist, perverted... I could go on and on. I don't now "why" it happen(ed)... but I do know that God is greater than anyone and can deliver you if you need it! So, try to be good... and actually my sweet friend tells me "why be good when you can be great?!" so... be great and accept (all) people for who they are, because sometimes that is all they need - to believe in themselves and find the Way. God Bless y'all ... :) lionofzion56

With all the trouble in the world today, I don't think anyone can actually point to something and call it opression. It is possible for those who are weaker in their spiritual walk to be constantly tried with trials and tribulation to the point that they have exhausted their ability to pray and meditate on God. If Satan cannot have your soul then he will do this sort of thing. However, we have the Holy Spirit/Comforter who will provide a way to overcome and grow from this experience. Joh:15:7: If ye abide in me, and my words abide in you, ye shall ask what ye will, and it shall be done unto you.

First, I think we need to understand what God says about our battle. For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the powers, against the world forces of this darkness, against the spiritual forces of wickedness in the heavenly places. Ephesians 6:12 The kind of oppression you are talking about, DD, is of this nature and it is NOT with flesh and blood. Certainly the enemy uses people but the battle is in the spiritual realm. Second, it is fought on our knees in prayer and with the encouragement of His word. We must put on the armor of God so that we can stand. We encourage ourselves by believing what God says and we stand and pray. The enemy seeks to discourage us and his tactic is to use lies. But greater is He that is in me than he that is in the world. I John 4:4 That's why the word of God is so important in the battle. We need to be reminded over and over and over again of what is true and not believe the lies. Oppression is to come under the weight of the enemy's lies. But the Lord is a stronghold for the oppressed (Ps 9:9). You return to Him, believe what He says, and you find yourself in His Shelter House. I think spiritual oppression is more apt to be a reality for some because of their God given temperament. For example, I struggle in this area. The enemy knows my weaknesses. I have a melancholy temperament so am easily drawn to lies that put me down. So the enemy will seek to remind me of places where I have failed or sin from the past. I become oppressed when I choose to believe the lies and let them weigh down on me. That's why the Apostle Paul says to think on these things (whatever is true, whatever is honorable, . .) in Phil 4:8. I have to turn my mind back to the things God says, what He says about me, and that is the important place of the word of God in the battle. And then I stand and pray and He fights for me. And I just praise and thank Him for His love and care for me. My husband sometimes recognizes before I do the lies that I am believing. That's why two are better than one. When I fall down, he's there to help me. Anyway, that's my experience with oppression. I'll think on it more and return if I have additional thoughts. Edited to add additional thoughts: II Corinthians 10 speaks to this as well and Paul uses the terms of warfare here. For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war according to the flesh, for the weapons of our warfare are not of the flesh, but divinely powerful for the destruction of fortresses. We are destroying speculations and every lofty thing raised up against the knowledge of God, and we are taking every thought captive to the obedience of Christ. . . (verses 3-5). We cast down every lie by using and believing God's word. This is our part of the battle and is part of the warfare needed when battling the enemy's oppression.

Seven Suffers-Why do your people suffer personally, Lord? Here’s at least seven reasons: 1. Because of my personal neglect. Peter tells us there is no value in suffering which is caused by our own foolishness. 2. Taking a Stand for truth and righteousness. Peter, again, says, “But if you suffer for righteousness sake, happy are you: and be not afraid of their terror, neither be troubled." 3. I suffer for Sin in my life. Since I have come into the “liberty of obedience” to Christ’s blood the refusal to deal with sin, personally, is an affront to that very blood that redeemed me. God must confront that attitude and he will judge me. 4. “Do not be deceived; God will not be mocked. Whatever a person sows, that crop must be harvested and consumed.” I suffer for my unwise choices. A fifth reason can be for some higher Purpose of God which he doesn’t always reveal to me. I would like to think you have a high purpose, Lord but I still struggle with your providence. 6. Throughout history Christians have suffered for their Faith in Christ’s martyrdom. We are so tied to this existence that it seems like life itself but our citizenship is not of this world. Finally but not exclusively, “For whom the Lord loves he chastens and scourges very son that he receives.” I suffer Discipline as I am refined to conform more closely to your will. Purge my walk with you, Lord. Micah 7:3- reads: “Concerning evil, both hands do it well . . . But as for me, I will watch expectantly for the Lord . . . Do not rejoice over me, O my enemy. Though I fall I will rise; Though I dwell in darkness, the Lord is a light for me. I will bear the indignation of the Lord because I have sinned against Him, until He pleads my case and executes justice for me. He will bring me out to the light and I will see His righteousness. Who is a God like Thee who pardons iniquity and passes over the rebellious acts of the remnant of His possession? He does not retain His anger forever, because He delights in His unchanging love.”

We are called to be overcomers. What would there be to overcome if we were not in the midst of a battle? All believers are in a battle and satan seeks to defeat, discourage, and ruin all those who love Jesus. If you haven't felt his oppressive ways in your life, perhaps you need to ask who your daddy is? (I'm not addressing that to anyone in particular and everyone is general.)
