I have been called a fundie! It's official.

I am clinging to Noah's Ark, believeing in talking donkeys, think God created the universe, evolution is a myth, and one day I'm gonna sprout wings and fly away.

Atheists have made these comments about me recently as insults, but I think I might have a T-shirt made to commerate the happy occasion. "Fundie '08" on the front of it. What do you all think?

Just sharing my thoughts.

I think it's often more interesting, effective, and well-received to engage in thoughtful discussion and debate rather than shouting "nanny nanny boo boo."

Congratulations!

quote:

I am clinging to Noah's Ark,

Considering that Noah’s ark is an archetype of Christ that is a good thing.

quote:

believeing in talking donkeys

That paid off big time for Balaam in Numbers 22.

quote:

think God created the universe

Smart choice.

quote:

evolution is a myth

Personally, I see it as a lie straight out of the pits of hell.

quote:

and one day I'm gonna sprout wings and fly away.

Well, I don’t know about the sprouting wings part. In fact I rather doubt it, but as Christians we WILL one day fly away.

Do you mind if I plagiarize that idea?

Just for starters, I think you'll also have to be a KJV-only, wear no pants, not ever cut your hair, never go to the beach, stay away from all theaters, and abstain from any alcohol (even in cough syrup)... Just for starters.

I don't cut my hair any more - no time to make and appointment

I'd rather have the shirt that says "nanny nanny boo boo" and use it as a conversation started.

I'm assuming that you are a bit tongue-in-cheek with your OP and if not, please understand I am easily distracted and confused. Oh, look, a bunny. SOFT

True, and it was 4 when I posted that one. It just always catches me off guard when somebody I've never seen responds to an obscure thread. I was just wondering if maybe people prowl the S&O threads and just rarely respond.

I'm prowling, and there are at least two others doing the same right now. And that doesn't count the numbers of "guests" and/or non-logged-in people who do so, as well.

All you really need do to be labeled a “fundie” in these forums is reject a materialistic dogma.

Of course, if you are describing the picture being painted of you by the one calling you a fundie you are quite right about “Just for starters”.
You might add, never allow a woman to let her ankles show, believe that Adam named every species of mosquito that exists today while he was in the garden, fear falling off the edge of the earth, insist the sun revolves around the earth, know that man never really reached the moon, never allow a wife to have any part in making any decision and most importantly NEVER let a woman speak a word at church.

How many times has a forum member called another forum member "fundie" in the Science & Origins folder in the last year?

Go on, guess. Then use the search feature.

No need to apologize. I'm just having a hard time deciding how to moderate this thread and keep it on topic, since I'm not clear what the purpose of this thread is.

I guess that the purpose of the thread is to find out how other Christians respond to be labeled a "fundamentalist Christian" because of views of science and origins. Should a Christian consider it a compliment, or an insult? I take it as a compliment, because I'm not supposed to fit into this world system.

All right, how many threads in any of these forums have contained the word "fundie" in any context in the last year?

If the search function is accurate, you won't even need your toes to count them.

Fundie. Fundamentalist.
quote:

1. A usually religious movement or point of view characterized by a return to fundamental principles, by rigid adherence to those principles, and often by intolerance of other views and opposition to secularism.
2.
a. often Fundamentalism - An organized, militant Evangelical movement originating in the United States in the late 19th and early 20th century in opposition to Protestant Liberalism and secularism, insisting on the inerrancy of Scripture.
b. Adherence to the theology of this movement.
I'd rather be called a Christian fundamentalist any day than be called an atheist or Darwinist fundamentalist (Dawkins, Hitchens, Moran, PZ, Denett, Scott etc).

  • Atheism has no basis in reality.
  • Darwinism is going down the tubes in the face of reality and "is evidently nonsense of a high order" (Hoyle)
  • Archeology supports the historical accounts of the bible 100% thus far (according world renown archaeologist Nelson Gluek)
-No one has ever proven any biblical account to be wrong
-The evidence for the resurrection of Christ is enormous
-The moral principles demanded by Christ are the highest and most noble ever spoken or written anywhere, any time
    -Long list of pros...

do the math
take yer pick eh

BTW, who cares how many times Fundie appears in the forum? It's a common and generally derogatory term used by the mass media, atheists etc. all over the world these days, no matter who it applies to.

I just think it's hilarious that unclemonkey apparently enjoys his martyrdom complex so much that he's happy to imagine persecution on this Christian-oriented site, when in fact there is very little.

I hate to keep playing this game, but how many times have the world mass media used the word "fundie" in the past year? A Google News search produces 22 hits, which either come from non-mainstream sources or are quoting others.

It reminds me of this.

I was of course referring to 'fundamentalist', not the exact derivative word 'fundie'. Fundie is found all over web forums, the media doesn't use the short form. The semantic may change the use is the same. But I suspect you understood that from the beginning.

It isn't a question of mind reading but of understanding the meaning of words and of discerning the underlying sense of this topic - name calling and fundamentalism's ubiquitously being viewed as = to fanaticism etc..
Fundie = fundamentalist - you certainly knew that without mind reading.
So this isn't merely a discussion of the unique term 'fundie' but of the attitude that has brought the word fundamentalist to mean an ignorant religious fanatic.

  • Funnily enough, just stating something as fact doesn't make it a fact. That's reality.
    quote:

  • So a quote that is by my guess 50 years old by a mathematician who had no concept of biology makes Evolutionary Theory go down the tubes...interesting conclusion #2.

-No one has ever proven any biblical account to be wrong

Well, that's a matter of opinion.

    quote:

-The evidence for the resurrection of Christ is enormous

    Enormously overstated.
    quote:

-The moral principles demanded by Christ are the highest and most noble ever spoken or written anywhere, any time

    Matter of opinion.

Right, just like you using "darwinist" and "atheist" in a derogatory manner...
