Well, after problems with our last poll thread, Kath suggested I just start over again and that I start a new one every month (since there seems to be a lot of traffic in this one). I know it isn't quite November yet, but it's only one poll for the rest of October, so I am adding it in here under November's thread.

I guess my suggestion that there could possibly be in issue with forums upset the system, so it broke the thread!

I don't do anything for Halloween. Never have.

I also never have done anything for Halloween, not even when I was a child growing up in a non-Christian home. I don't remember anyone in our area doing anything back then.

We have dressed Josh up all 3 years - pumpkin, Yoda and this year as a "construction man", no he is NOT Bob the Builder, just ask him! Seriously, I couldn't find a costume I was willing to pay for so I bought a toy construction set with a hat and tool belt and put him in an undershirt, jeans and his brown sneakers that look kind of like work boots. We have done various community events - karate studio party, library costume parade etc. As far as TT goes, we have taken him to 2 neighbors houses to show off his costume and let them spoil him with a piece of candy. These are the people we talk to through out the year, we don't go anywhere else. Our immediate neighborhood pretty much ignores Halloween - the town has a big event sponsored by the Chamber of Commerce and most of the kids go there. I am debating about taking him next year - the last time we went (he was just a baby and I was helping out with a booth) somebody had a mini haunted house set up and they were making the kids go through it to get candy. Well, after about a half dozen little ones under 5 ran out screaming somebody came to their senses and moved the candy out front. I think it was the Police Explorers with too little adult supervision that night. They are very active around here and seem like a good group, just didn't show it then. But I have heard that it was kind of iffy last year (the whole thing), so maybe next year Mark or I will go and check it out then decide about running the kids down for a bit. It is only 10 minutes away so no biggie.

I'm not going anywhere doing anything.....back home in Mississippi (look out, small town country girl tells all) we didn't celebrate halloween as a family, nor did any of my friends, so we would just drive the back roads, find cow pastures.....and go cow tipping! Horrible I know! I confess

LOL

We change what we do every year...however, we don't usually do the whole ToT thing or dressing up. Once, years ago when we only had 2 kids, we let them get into their dress up stuff and went to the mall. It was me, my kids, my friend (who also hates halloween), and her boys. Neither of us had ever done anything for Halloween, so it was interesting to let the kids do that. We have gone to a few church things through the years, but I have never been too impressed with them...we will see this year how this church does. Last year we just stayed home and gave out candy to the kids that came by.

Oh yeah...kids are dressing up this year again. I wasn't sure about it...going back and forth...but ultimately I decided to let them. Paul suggested it be as Bible characters, so that's what they are doing.
Jake is going as the Armor Of God. We got a set at the Christian book store that has the names written on the items.
Hannah is dressing as her favorite Bible character...Mary (complete with her baby doll). She loves that I am letting her use a large scarf Paul got me in Kuwait a few years ago).
Emma is going as Queen Esther. Paul got the kids outfits in Kuwait a few years ago, so Emma is going to wear Hannah's outfit that is beaded and kind of ornate. It's yellow and pink (some might have seen the pics of Hannah in it). (I need to get off of here and attach the sleeves to it...they came with it, but not on it, and Emma wants sleeves).
My mom came up with this one for Jack and Justice...they are going as Jonathon (Jack) and David (Justice). Jack is going to wear Jake's old outfit from Kuwait...white pants, dark blue and maroon shirt, with a maroon and gold scarf as a sash over his shoulder. It is a bit big on him, but looks fine and will work. Justice is going to wear a long t-shirt and fuzzy material I got today (it's sooooooooo soft too!!!!) as a sash, and a rope belt. My mom sent him a small stuffed sheep (because amazingly we didn't have one...lol). She also sent a paper harp craft that she does with her class...not sure if he will carry it or not.

I am not dressing up...I don't like to...never have.

My children and I will walk to a church /community event down the street and maybe do a little T-o-ting around a neighborhood.

My youngest is going as a Roller Derby girl - with her attitude it works. I've made her promise to be VERY careful to NOT knock anyone over!
The 10 year old was planning on going as a Hobbit, but then he got sick and we just never put that costume together. He'll likely just make something up that includes the new rainbow colored Seuss style hat we found him at Goodwill last week.
And the 11 year old is going as a gypsy, complete with long flowy black skirt with gold trim and flouncy top and shawl! She and I went to Goodwill and concocted this costume while browsing the racks - it cost me less then $5!

Blessings,

Garsy

I refuse to dress up. Mark if pressed will tell people he is dressed as "the sociopath next door", shuts them up quick. I think we might just scrap the whole thing in a couple of years - but right now I am having way too much fun dressing Josh up and showing him off. Anybody do something like bowling, mini-golf instead of the whole ToT/Halloween thing? I've read things like that suggested as alternatives. I like the costumes for your kids Sarah, they sound both fun and meaningful. And it is really nice you got to reuse/hand down stuff to your younger ones.

Generally we stay home and hide from the trick or treaters. This year we're actually going to a party that some friends of ours are having. I'm sort of glad because we won't have to listen to the dog bark every time someone rings the doorbell (keeping your porch light off does NOT discourage them here).

Never kept Halloween in my life; don't go to any Fall festivals. Never plan on doing either.
This year however we will be going to regular Saturday service.

Our kids are grown and we have a nifty church celebration at a state park the Sunday afterwards, picnic and all. We will be passing out candy to the few kids that will come knocking at our door.

I've never celebrated halloween.

New Zealand and Australia don't really celebrate it. Might get the occasional kid coming to the door, but on the whole, it's pretty much a non event.

That's how it used to be here. Until commercialisation and the American influence came over.

I met a (non-Christian) friend this morning in the supermarket who is a a few years younger than me, and she said "Halloween was a non-event when we were children - hardly anyone bothered with it. Now people are saying to me ' what are you doing for Halloween?' and I don't get it at all. What are they even celebrating? I just don't get it."

I just smiled and said I understood.

I actually refused to put up an witches, ghosts and gouls when I was a produce manager. I accepted that I had to sell pumpkins (specifically around this time) but, much to my boss's disappointment, I wouldn't decorate. I told him my stance when I was offered the position (had been offered it sometime in September I think). He didn't like it, but he accepted it.

Years back, when I was studying, we discussed Halloween (and 'Bonfire Night') and I wondered whether part of the reason it had grown so much (besides the American influence and commercial value) was because it was the last real chance of having some fun before the long nights of winter set in.

Though of course we do have Bonfire Night only 5 days later!!

(and probably now at least 7 nights of fireworks - the poor kitties and doggies . My bunnies won't be too impressed either - nor the New Forest ponies. )

Handing out candy to the ToTs, then going to a Halloween party with my fireman. We're going as Gomez and Morticia Addams of the Addams Family.

We went to a free showing of Monsters vs. Aliens, will have pizza and wings with extended family soon, then ToTing in a neighboring town, then back home for cider and donuts with family. We usually go to my mom and dad's for cider and donuts, but we're all gathering here this year.

It is raining here. If it is still raining when we go, Esther will not come with us and we won't be out long.
