Ok, at my desk I have at any time 3 desktop PCs and anywhere from 0 to 3 laptops - work related folks, I am not just a freak... well maybe... but they are needed for my job. What I want to do is get the audio output from at least 3, or more, of these audio sources fed into one set of headphones. The reason I want this is I want to hear the beeps and clicks as something on one machine is trying to get my attention while I am working on another. So I have been looking for something like a cheap cheap stereo mixer, but they are not cheap enough. I have thought soldering up my own passive stereo mixer (something like this). So yeah, I am a cheapskate. Any suggestions?

Well, it's not very elegant, as the author admits, but if it works, you can't argue with that. It should be okay if all you want to hear is beeps and clicks. You can get a cheap 1W amp here that will drive a cheap speaker -- something under five bucks from MCM Electronics for example (click "audio/video," then "speaker components," then "midrange", then "under $3.99") or anything you can rip out of junk you might already have lying around. You will also need a 6V or 9V DC power supply for the thing, e.g. a wall wart.

But, how are the "beeps and clicks" merged together help? Would they not over lap sometimes, or produce the same results? You would still need to go and identify where the sound came from... Why not lights?

What you have there should work fine. If it were me I would trade out the RCA plugs for 1/8 stereo jacks and just use 1/8 male to male stereo patch cords rather than the RCA adaptors. That means you could easily add 3 more input channels.
